Has anybody got a fire or logburner lit at home today?

I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

It is regrettable that the issue of fires and log burners is so contentious, especially when so many people and pets appreciate them.

Personally I think it's regrettable that so many people are unnecessarily burning shit that makes their neighbors' laundry stink and puts dangerous particles in the air that everyone else has to breathe.

The medical evidence on how bad these things are only continues to mount, but the log burning people have spent a lot of money putting these things in, so are going to have a hard time accepting the scientific reality.

You literally cant smell my log burner at all. As long as the wood is seasoned it does not smell. It certainly doesn't make washing stink. You're doing it all wrong.

Its carbon neutral and for us is a very environmentally friendly option since we entirely burn our own wood.

You heat using fossil fuels presumably - gas and electricity?

Meadowfinch · 20/11/2024 06:48

Yes, we've lit ours the last few nights. I'm burning a sallow tree we had to fell two years ago and has been drying in the shed ever since. It should last us all this winter and some of next.

It keeps us lovely & warm, and the amount that I save on heating will pay for the tree surgeon. 🙂

I literally know nobody in real life who gets worked up about wood burners. It seems to be only on MN!

Mind you that applies to a lot of things 😀.

The particulate output of domestic stoves and fireplaces is very well known. In the last couple of years the rules on selling fuel and firewood for domestic appliances were updated.

We're in a suburban area and have a multifuel stove. It's an approved type and was installed by a HETAS approved installer. We're careful about what we burn and how, not everyone is.

Trixiefirecracker · 20/11/2024 09:04

This! Only on MN do people froth about these things. Meanwhile everyone driving about in their huge cars, and heating their homes how? All fossil fuels are bad for our environment.

tuvamoodyson · 20/11/2024 09:20

Mine is on now…toastie warm!

Yes I know ...but as I said , in real life I know absolutely loads of people with log burners and nobody gets worked up about them ...only on here!

It's about human health, not just the environment.

You are increasing your own and others' risks of things like lung cancer, Alzheimers and Parkinsons.

I feel your Mum’s pain, all of our neighbours have log burners, and because our chimney ( gas fire not used, but proper chimney) is cold, the smoke comes down into our sitting room.

We live semi rural, no restrictions on burning, and not on mains gas supply.

Ive had to leave the room on an evening. We all have asthma.

Why on earth haven't you put a chimney cap on and blocked the fireplace off?!
Your literally burning through money on heat loss from your home otherwise!

Back bedrooms are cold today and kids will come home and go on computers.

Ok so to be precise, I'd turn off radiators in rooms heated by the log burner & leave them on in rooms that are needed & are cold.

Id love to show mine but so identifying if someone i know is on here. But its 250 yr old inglenook. With storage for a tonne of wood. Bread oven, and a whacking big wonky oak beam.

You should have name changed to post a photo on this thread, I'd have loved to see it too.

IsThePopeCatholic · 20/11/2024 14:59

No thanks. I don’t want carcinogenic fine particulate matters in my house!

Middle of nowhere, no gas in the village!

Looks lovely!! Enjoy!! 😊

@AutumnLeaves24 we are running the emergency immersion heater for hot water. Last time we did this, the electricity company thought it was our regular electricity consumption and put our bill up by £200 per month. It’s not an ideal situation. 😬

Urgh. No it's not ideal, but at least you have running hot water!!!

maybe ring them & tell them it's only temporary 🤞🏼🤞🏼

We’ve just moved to a much bigger home and having one is such a novelty! Haven’t got around to repainting the horrid yellow wall yet, but here’s ours, currently rumbling away! 🔥

The yellow is an interesting choice!!

🤮

what colour are you going to paint it??

AutumnLeaves24 · 20/11/2024 15:22

CosyFire88 · 19/11/2024 18:39

I have....because we had heavy snow and the boiler decided to stop working 😑

@CosyFire88

Does your water heat up from the fire?

it looks cosy! But I hope you can get your boiler working again quickly!!

toomanyjobsforonewoman · 19/11/2024 18:46

Had ours on all day with no heating on to save money . All hunkered down together watching Christmas films . Lovely day for us here

That looks & sounds amazing!!

living the life!!

bagheera92 · 19/11/2024 18:58

Yesterday and today we've had ours on

Ahh lovely!!

I think 'the kids' need a cosy rug though!!

I have one and it's lit but I loathe them. I have no gas and a big draughty house. My stove heats the water and can, at a push, run the central heating if I'm low on oil.
Filthy horrible things, I would love a gas fire. Dirty to light, clean, carting logs in none stop.

I'll swap, I don't have a gas fire (don't like them) but I have gas, you could install one.

Ill take the big draughty house & fire/log burner!!

StandingSideBySide · 20/11/2024 15:33

No we haven’t lit ours yet this year but as it was 9c inside this am I think it’s now time to
Here it is looking sad and cold.
Blimey and in need of a good clean 🤣🤣

Tempting but it’d be identifying

@grumpypedestrian

more identifying than a photo of your lounge?! Is you dig famous??? 😂

Honestly @AutumnLeaves24 when you struggle with a house that can’t get passed 12c you might think again. Last night I felt like using the cat to plug the holes in our single glazed “no you can’t change them or even reset them because its listed “ windows.

Hohohovember · 20/11/2024 15:37

We moved into our new house 2 years ago and only got around to finishing the sitting room last night. So for the first time ever tonight the stove will be lit 🙂
