I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

In my corner of Scotland we have plenty of snow. No school for my children so far this week, the buses haven’t made it up our rural road.

We have a log burner ...wouldn't be without it. The heat it throws out is incredible and in this weather its absolutely wonderful!

Soontobe60 · 19/11/2024 17:14

Love my log burner. We only use kiln dried wood, hardly use the gas boiler, or the tumble dryer. How do the naysayers heat their houses when it’s cold?
My granny lived to the ripe old age of 101, was one of 14 siblings and the youngest age at death was 89. They had open coal fires from infancy til the 1980’s, and even then granny kept her open coal fire as she lived the smell of burning coal!
Some people will be affected by the particulates from all sources of power in the atmosphere, others not so much,

Please don't get one of these... My elderly mother has a lung disease (not a smoker before anyone throws that at me) and is realllly suffering whenever she leaves the house in the winter. She lives in an average sized mostly-middle class town and it's fucking FULL of log burners. Every. Single. Time she leaves the house she is coughing her guts up and it leaves her coughing black phlegm up for days afterwards. She now hasn't left the house in 5 weeks....she won’t even walk to her garage to put laundry in her dryer.

So unbelievably bloody selfish

Edited

That sounds horrible. I wouldn’t have one in town or village but we have one because we get frequent power cuts. We also have no neighbours, back arse of nowhere here. Nearest farm is several miles away.

@VegTrug thats a bit harsh.

I live in the countryside. I bloody love the smell of wood burning.

I can only imagine your mother's neighbours are burning plastic or something.

Maybe the wood is too wet. I think our wood has to be under 20% moisture content as we are in a smoke controlled area.

Loving it here, and we have no snow yet!

Is that an open fire?

We have recently moved to a house with an open fire and ashamed to say I don't know how to use it! What do we burn? Logs? Coal?

doodleygirl · 19/11/2024 17:21

We are just about to install a gas burner, looks like a log burner, acts like a log burner but alas it is a lookalike. We live in an urban area and I’ve so much research on pollution and I cant in all conscience install one, especially now as I have a tiny grandson and another on the way. Log burner pollutant is harmful to young babies. We are going for this:

Lit it early today as it's pretty chilly.

That whole photo... stone & log burner...deep envy!!

Nothing quite like it. The pub up the road has a log burner which is usually alight all day but is allowed to go out in the evening!

That's why my locals get my custom through the winter!

BobsyouruncleStephsyouraunt · 19/11/2024 17:24

Yeah not a fan here either... they are actually really bad for the environment!
We have an eco fuel fire, runs off ethanol.

We have our windows open a bit for ventilation and the smell of our neighbours comes in and ruins the washing every day.

That was a perfect example of the power of dropping an apostrophe!

Our hound grumbles at us when it’s cold and not lit

Post again when he's enjoying it, in the frame!!

My fire has been on most of day, but now dying down as heating has came on.

I'd be turning the heating down/off & keeping the log burner on!!

lightningstrikes · 19/11/2024 17:34

With dog. Two cats on the sofa out of shot.

We have 2 stoves. This one has been lit most of the day. We are in a village so no mains gas. We have an oil boiler and 2 stoves which keep our Victorian house warm. All our neighbours have the same.
