I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

Lit ours at lunchtime, but we're out of seasoned wood at the moment (between trees) and it's on smokeless fuel. Which does make it easier to keep in all day and overnight when the temperature really drops.

@VegTrug thats a bit harsh.

I live in the countryside. I bloody love the smell of wood burning.

I can only imagine your mother's neighbours are burning plastic or something.

It's quite clear what wood burning smells like thank you very much! Not plastic at all. Everyone is complaining about it, it's pollution ffs

Pinkchicken75 · 19/11/2024 18:01

@VegTrug
your quite rude !!
we have two log burners ,no central heating, no gas .We need to keep warm & mould free!

Well that's obviously different isn't it! If you can’t afford to have central heating installed then fair enough. I never once suggested anyone sit in the cold. It's just so bloody selfish in built up areas when people in their urban/suburban semi have delusions of grandeur and like to pretend they live in a country farmhouse and are choosing to use one instead of their home's ten radiators. That is when it's selfish in my personal opinion

Exactly @doodleygirl

Preppingdonkey · 19/11/2024 22:04

Basically log burners are an acceptable form of pollution cause they look nice.

We don't have one, but our lovely neighbours do - one opposite, and one next door. The smell from them both is lovely! 😍

Preppingdonkey · 19/11/2024 22:06

Do you say the same to car drivers? Plastic manufacturers? There's a lot worse things than log burners that I bet you use at some point in your daily life. Unless you live off grid in a hobbit hole stfu.

So no one can ever be concerned about climate change or pollution unless they live off grid in a hobbit hole? Can the bar not be a tiny bit higher?

@AlmostCutMyHairToday 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

VegTrug · 19/11/2024 22:09

@bigvig Grow up! I've explained the effect it is having on my mum (and millions of others) and I can assure you, cars don't have anywhere near the same effect on her, not even diesels! So there's no comparison. Stfu yourself! 🤣

My neighbour’s just got one. My house now smells of smoke.

Please contact your local council's environmental health department. You'll be very surprised what they can do about that....

Werp · 19/11/2024 22:17

My neighbours certainly all have theirs running, went outside for five minutes and had to use my asthma inhaler. Still wheezing several hours later.

Selfishness is rife in this house too!!

We have pretty much the same cat and dog 😂

BlueFloweredMug · 19/11/2024 22:35

VegTrug · 19/11/2024 16:46

Please don't get one of these... My elderly mother has a lung disease (not a smoker before anyone throws that at me) and is realllly suffering whenever she leaves the house in the winter. She lives in an average sized mostly-middle class town and it's fucking FULL of log burners. Every. Single. Time she leaves the house she is coughing her guts up and it leaves her coughing black phlegm up for days afterwards. She now hasn't left the house in 5 weeks....she won’t even walk to her garage to put laundry in her dryer.

So unbelievably bloody selfish

Edited

I feel your Mum’s pain, all of our neighbours have log burners, and because our chimney ( gas fire not used, but proper chimney) is cold, the smoke comes down into our sitting room.

We live semi rural, no restrictions on burning, and not on mains gas supply.

Ive had to leave the room on an evening. We all have asthma.

I think you can make a complaint, particularly if you can pin point the culprit.
I just don’t know which one to complain about, as we are surrounded by them.

Next door got a second one ! But we had the problem, before they even got theirs.

tobee · 19/11/2024 22:41

We only use smoke free coal here. Stays lovely and warm for ages too!

I can never smell our log burner from outside (our house and chimney is very tall, so this may be why). I wonder whether it’s something you simply don’t notice if you are not sensitive to it, but is horrible if you are.

Have you considered blocking off the chimney?

Yes surely blocking the chimney is obvious? Shove some thick plastic bags up there. We used animal feed sacks when we weren't using our chimney.

We have blocked off the one in our bedroom with a black bin bag stuffed with loft insulation.

Current evidence suggests there is no safe level of PM2.5 particulate matter air pollutionn and domestic wood burning contributes 17% of London’s PM2.5 air pollutionn.

CountryShepherd · 20/11/2024 00:03

Middle of nowhere, no gas in the village!

So things other than wood burners emit 83%, a supermajority, of these particulates?

Managed to keep mine going overnight and have just got another log going. The house is so much warmer with it having burned all night.

This was from Sunday. I didn't get in until 7pm last night so didn't light it but they really do make a difference in older, solid properties. It really doesn't take much wood to get it hot.
