I haven't as there's no provision for one in my modest home but it's certainly the right weather. Could we please see pictures? Thankyou.

@AutumnLeaves24 haha. It's true it's cosy when lit but the novelty factor wore off long ago. I've lived here 35 years and would love instant heat at the flick of a switch. Instead, you have to clean it out, lay some paper, carry in logs and sticks and light it. An hour later the room feels warmer. Three hours later you want to throw the windows open because you can't just turn it off.
I had a builders bag of logs delivered yesterday, plus some sticks. That was £110. We live in a tiny village amid farmland but, because everyone and his dog has a woodburner now, logs aren't cheap. I have half a tree taking up space in my garden but I can't use it yet because the logs have to sit there for a year or two to season.

@woffley a few years ago, I could have practically written that, I do understand!! But rise tinted glasses soon get you past the effort it takes!!

I had a couple if oil filled radiators that could wheel to any room I wanted instant heat in. Trouble was, once it was cosy you didn't want want to move to light the fire!

i did (mostly) learn to be kind to myself by either keeping them burning or setting them up just to light & didn't have my own trees, so didn't have that issue, just ordering (& paying) for good wood.

I liked it when I was young & my Dad had a forest permit & a trailer and we'd go and stock up & fill the wood store ( for future years)

HATED. Cleaning the bloody brass fireplace though!!

We have a gorgeous soft stone colour.
Cant wait to get started with it! It’s such a beautiful room, it’s going to look amazing when it’s finished! ☺️

@KimFan

sounds nice!!

could you update the thread when you've done it? It doesn't matter if it's not until next spring/summer!! I do love an update photo!!

We should get together.
We have one in the kitchen. One of those big old ones that you could roast a cow on but there’s a whole in the chimney stack to outside and i can’t even give you a picture as we ve had boarding keeping the draft out since we moved in and the scaffolding holding it up has needed more scaffolding just to hold up the scaffolding 🤣🤣🤣
and here we sit on mumsnet 🤣🤣🤣

Well Jack all you can do about it at 4pm this time of year! So you might as well be in here chatting with us!!🤗

We had our gas pipe capped, so we can’t use it. We do put candles in there for aesthetics.

I’m technically cheating, but here’s a photo anyway!

Cheating or not, it looks lovely!!

if you wanted to, could you get a burner out in there??

I have asthma and live opposite a primary school so for my own and my community’s health I won’t have a real fire.
I do love the sound and the light that real fires generate so after extensive research have discovered this channel on You Tube which is the ultimate in fake tv real fires.

I like the real fire vids on Netflix but they only last an hour. These you tube ones go on for several hours and every now and then The Hand comes in and puts another log on the fire.

TV fake fire, my heated blanket and a good book and I’m very happy. No mess, pollution, tiny cost and I don’t have to clean up ashes the next day.

I might go & see if my ancient (2man to lift) tv will play this?!

if not will have to sacrifice using the iPad!!

That crackling is gorgeous.

Lit ours last night for the first time this season. We're in Devon with no mains gas (LPG heating) and very rural.

I have, it's minus 1 here in Scottish Highlands

Looks very cosy!!

its 0° here in the softy south! Lounge was 13° when I got home! I usually set the thermostat but it needs replacing, so just manually using the heating at the moment.

TheTecknician · 20/11/2024 20:03

Thankyou for your responses folks, enthusiastic or not! For those of you who dare to burn logs, do you know what kind of wood it is. I believe ash is the most common log from commercial suppliers. I believe birch also burns well, plus it grows everywhere. Yew is poisonous, apparently, and leaves sticky black deposits in your chimney!

TwistedSisters · 20/11/2024 20:09

We are burning our own wood at the moment as we had a couple of trees come down in a storm a couple years back. Larch and birch.

BoobyDazzler · 20/11/2024 20:10

I’m burning leylandii. Grown in my own garden and chopped down and processed by us with the help of a hired log splitter. Horrible trees but burn really well when they’re properly seasoned (+ two years). Our sweep confirms they aren’t damaging our flue.

We do burn smokeless coal too, usually when we’re off work and the stove will be on all day but there’s usually a couple of logs involved to get it going. Ours is a modern stove so won’t slumber.

TheBigSalami · 20/11/2024 20:13

Our wood burner is lit and really toasty. Our dog keeps putting his toys in front of it to warm them up.

We’re burning oak that has been seasoned for 2 years. We have a big wood store so can store for this long and it burns clean.

user9086572 · 20/11/2024 20:16

our trees are mainly oak, birch and sycamore so thats what we burn. All the ash have died/are dying so there is some left but not for long.

I’m too cautious. I was exposed to carbon monoxide as a child, so I’d rather not have a working fireplace. Thankfully, mine can be used for aesthetics

Scottishskifun · 20/11/2024 20:55

@TheTecknician we use hardwoods which is a mix of beech, sycamore with a bit of birch typically. This year has some oak in but we had severe storms a few years ago which flattened large areas of developed woodland all over North East Scotland.

We also removed a birch which we then seasoned for 2 years. Would say birch burns a bit quicker then beech but it gets hot.

We once had a softwood delivery never again and we won't even get a mixed bag anymore. If our closest supplier has run out then we go to the bigger one for hardwood. A good dried hardwood not only produces way less smoke it also kicks out more heat and you need less logs overall. We typically use 2-3 cubic meters per winter/spring. But we are also in North Scotland and it heats our house.
