Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Yes, I love blancmange!! It's very easy to make too.

And semolina should make a comeback - impossible to find in shops (although according to DH it brings back bad memories of school so he's probably happy it's nowhere to be seen...)

I use semolina to coat the roasties at Christmas - think I bought it in Sainsburys or Waitrose.

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

No that's a milk jelly - different texture to blancmange.

Gypsy tart and lardy cake!

Omg! I used to love a lardy cake! Saw one in a cake shop in Northumberland last year.

Miss Muffet junket tablets made a popular pudding in our house. When did they disappear?
We 3 sisters loathed milk jelly, blancmange and coffee flavoured Symingtons Crème (sp?).

I'm not 100% sure of the title but I think it's just a syrup tart. My mum used to scrunch up corn flakes and make the base using that somehow. God knows how exactly. Hot from the oven with vanilla ice cream- glorious!

If it had a bit of jam on the base I believe it’s called Manchester Tart?

noodlebugz · 18/11/2024 20:44

trifle - particularly for those digestively challenged I doubt the m and s made without trifle was around back in the day but I was gutted when they stopped selling it!

@herecomesautumn Last time I wanted some - ypu could buy dream topping on ocado

My memories of food from the 60's and 70's are probably best left there - stuffed lamb's hearts, anyone? Or the dreaded baked apples - hollowed out, and with currants in the middle. I never want to see another one of those in my lifetime!

This thread has reminded me of cornflake tart. DH has fond childhood memories of that, so I might look up a recipe.

I love stuffed baked apples.

I remember white pepper being on the table in every cafe when I was a kid.
But it’s amazing on carrot and swede mash 😋

Treacle Tart. Pastry case (or.maybe crunched cornflakes), white bread crumbs then drizzle.over golden syrup until they're covered. Bake. 😋

MellersSmellers · 18/11/2024 21:24

How about....
Homemade rice pudding with a nice nutmeg skin
Pease pudding
Butterscotch angel delight
Eves pudding (apple sponge)
Pineapple upside down pudding

Ooh, feeling inspired now. I'm off to make a Spooted Dick!

White pepper is far superior for certain dishes, scambled egg, cooked with butter and cream and served on mega buttered toast is one of them. God.

Original coo candy (highland toffee I remember my dad whacking it on the mantle piece to break it been about early 70s

We were sophisticated because we had a toffee hammer 😀
It came free with a slab of Walkers toffee.

I still use it in mine my dad noticed when I cooked for him recently

Pineapple upside down cake.

soupfiend · 18/11/2024 22:16

White pepper on beans on toast as well

JennyChawleigh · 18/11/2024 22:19

Did anyone else eat spotted dick with roast lamb (like Yorkshire puddings with beef)? Apparently my mother inherited the tradition from her mother.

I’m not sure if it should make a comeback, but with news reports that there is taramasalata shortage, I was reminded of cod’s roe in tins that used to get served sliced and fried like a fishcake. I’m guessing taramasalata could be made with tinned cod’s roe.
@Printedword no, sorry, taramasalata is made from smoked cod roe. I love tge tinned stuff and eat it often, its on amazon to buy, but you can't make taramasalata with it.

Every christmas, my mum would buy my dad a tray of nut toffee with a toffee hammer. I have still got one of the hammers. Its around 60 years old.

Yup, no pepper grinders, cruets were two shakers, one for salt and one for ground white pepper a la Alices Queen and her song.

levantine · 18/11/2024 22:26

I'd written off white pepper but I think pps are absolutely right about it. Will add to shopping list

We used to have that but with a pastry base. Containing golden syrup and cornflakes baked in the oven served with ice cream or at school with fake cream

Used to be able to buy in in a box with 5 different flavours

You can get gypsy tart in Kent. It’s very much a Kentish food.

Oh I love gypsy tart, especially homemade. Discovered Morrisons stock them from time to time, they’re almost as good at a push!

Bowies · 18/11/2024 22:35

Loved baked apples(!) toffee apples, sponge (eg golden treacle) pudding and custard, bread and butter pudding, gooseberry tarte/crumble
