Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Blancmange. Cannot find it in the shops anywhere.

Yes agreed this is what i was going to say! My mum used to make us chocolate or strawberry blancmange when we were kids in the 80s, usually in an old fashioned jelly mould - lovely!

Didn't know you could buy it in a shop. My Mum just used to mix jelly with either Carnations milk or single cream, mix it up and let it set.

That's not blancmange, that's "Ghosts"...

@moonlight1705 they are still in Iceland and aldi, but only in a six pack

Suet. Anything with suet in it! Savory or pudding. Treacle tart. Any old school pudding. Lancashire hot pot is divine. Stew. Faggots. Also fruits that aren't common like gooseberries and damsons.

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

No jelly involved in blancmange, particularly if it's chocolate! Mainly cornflour, milk and sugar (and cocoa)...

I've never seen tinned semolina, I used to buy to weird semolina 'grains' in a packet and make them from that...

No, that’s a milk jelly.
Blacmange is generous tsb cornflour , 1-2 of sugar and cocoa powder ( not. drinking chocolate)
pint of milk. Mix dry ingredients with a little milk to a smooth paste. Warm milk mix together and cook until it thickens, like custard.
Very easy and delicious!

At least half of the things mentioned here are in my local Tesco! 😂

Go on, give me a list and I'll pop across the road and pick bits up for you!

@herecomesautumn - Asda sells dream topping! I bought some the other day

You can still get suet. I wanted the vegetable one they do, but local coop only had the trad kind. I do like to make dumplings. The kosher dumpling base that’s matzo is good too

Gypsy tart and lardy cake!

You can get gypsy tart in Kent. It’s very much a Kentish food.

Yes, I love blancmange!! It's very easy to make too.

And semolina should make a comeback - impossible to find in shops (although according to DH it brings back bad memories of school so he's probably happy it's nowhere to be seen...)

I have got a packet of semolina from Sainsburys, and just make it with milk, vanilla extract, and sugar, or sweetened condensed milk, if I have it in the cupboard. Ambrosia does a tinned semolina that I have seen as well.

*I have just seen your follow up post.

fitflopqueen · 17/11/2024 12:43

M&S sell semolina, also may find it in Indian food aisles or shops, husband is now hooked on halwa, halve the sugar on the pack though.

No, two different foods. Jelly made with milk I used to call ‘Milk jelly’ (original!). Blamanche a different dish.

Oh right! My mum always called milk jelly blancmange.

We used to have faggots, peas and mash a lot as kids. I haven't seen them many places since the 90s.

I still eat them you can buy them in the freezer they are very nice still

Scutterbug · 17/11/2024 12:44

Vol au vents! Loved them at a buffet!

Printedword · 17/11/2024 12:44

I’ve seen tinned and packet semolina recently - b and m, coop, Sainsbury’s probably. My bro and my son both dislike the texture of pears, semolina, polenta. That sort of gritty texture

Fireworknight · 17/11/2024 12:46

Chelsea buns - haven’t seen any in shops for ages.

Fairy cakes - small cake with thin icing and silver balks on top. None of these cakes with two inches of icing on top.

You know you can still buy this stuff faggots in the freezer and I have suet dumplings in stew they haven’t gone away

OneAliCat · 17/11/2024 12:46

Ok there was this particular chocolate cornflake crunch cake that I think came from Sainsburys, 90s/00s time. it was round and had raisins in and was scored into maybe 6 slices. I'd love to find that again.

TammyOne · 17/11/2024 12:46

Blancmange has gelatin in it too, not just cornflour. Otherwise it wouldn’t set.

evtheria · 17/11/2024 12:48

The cocktail sticks with a cube of cheese, ham, and pineapple

Fruitcakes or buns that contain lurid green, candied Angelica. I used to nibble bits of it while my mum baked.

There should be more huge sticky buns of sorts in cafes. I love a proper cinnamon roll as much as the next person, but sometimes a brew just suits a sticky, soft, almost plain bun better.

Iceland do Belgium buns

Each time I visit my parents (abroad) I have to go on a hunt for suet, as my Lancs dad makes various things with it. I always worry one year I won't be able to find any for him!
