Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

We used to have faggots, peas and mash a lot as kids. I haven't seen them many places since the 90s.

Probably because that word now cannot be used at all in other contexts?!

Maybe they would come back into favour if they were renamed "gaffots".

ednakenneth · 18/11/2024 18:35

You can buy faggots in any supermarket. Brains faggots. If you're from the North they sell them in butchers shops.
Blanc mange can be bought in sainsburys. I saw treacle tart in a supermarket. You can all these things if you have a look.

I have now chucked it out, but I'm almost certain one of the Dairy Diary cook books from the 80's had a recipe for cheese pudding, though for some reason I'm thinking they called it a cheese foot. I could well be wrong. Or there's this

www.essentially-england.com/cheese-pudding.html

Thank you - this recipe sounds perfect - much like what I can remember of DM’s. I’m making it for dinner tonight! With jacket potatoes and homemade coleslaw. 😋

White pepper... I mean I know you can still buy it, but no one ever seems to have it anymore, and restaurants never offer it. It seems like it's really old fashioned these days 😄 Black pepper is sometimes just too crunchy and not right with some stuff. I remember my mum always used to put white pepper in mashed potato and it was so nice. I keep meaning to buy some, like the retro bitch I am.

White pepper in mashed carrot and swede. 😍
Must make it at the weekend now I've thought about it.

So many people seem to miss milk puddings of various sorts. Would anyone be interested in a classic and easy Chinese one: ginger milk pudding?
It involves heating milk up to about 70° and stirring into a bowl containing a bit of fresh ginger juice (grate & strain). Cover and leave for 10' to set, texture like a soft blancmange! You can find more detailed instructions on YouTube etc.

@evtheria I would be extremely interested as a lover of both ginger and milk puddings. Thank you for sharing!

evtheria · 18/11/2024 18:48

@TheLastLemonSherbetInTheJar No problem, hope you've seen a recipe that has measurements etc. I used to eat it at my best friend's house, it was so comforting (esp on a sore throat) and I love ginger.

It had several meanings, including one to do with fuel for bonfires. However, language moves on. How do faggots differ from meatballs?

Betty’s curd tarts are to die for.

Betty's individual curd tarts have lemon curd in the base, which is an unnecessary addition to the traditional Yorkshire Curd Tart.

I'm not 100% sure of the title but I think it's just a syrup tart. My mum used to scrunch up corn flakes and make the base using that somehow. God knows how exactly. Hot from the oven with vanilla ice cream- glorious!

Treacle tart - delish !

My memories of food from the 60's and 70's are probably best left there - stuffed lamb's hearts, anyone? Or the dreaded baked apples - hollowed out, and with currants in the middle. I never want to see another one of those in my lifetime!

This thread has reminded me of cornflake tart. DH has fond childhood memories of that, so I might look up a recipe.

Wow you just brought back a memory from childhood, the baked apples!! Only we put mincemeat from a jar in them and ate them hot with ice cream and cream. I loved them!

My Mum used to buy braising steak from the butcher, and ask him to mince it for her.

Mine bought braising steak and minced it at home, she didn't trust butchers' mince, something about having lived during the war. (Same reason I never ate sausages until I was an adult away from home.) However, Mum did trust M&S and they had tinned minced meat so she used to make very tasty minced meat pies on a plate. I was always a bit put off by the yellow bits of tubes you'd find in there though....

LovelyBranches · 18/11/2024 19:08

You can make them easily and I still do, but I seem to be the only one whose DC likes banana sandwiches. They don’t seem fashionable anymore

You can get gypsy tart in Kent. It’s very much a Kentish food.

Is gypsy tart a very “ stick your teeth together “ chocolate pudding. I think that’s what they called it at school and I would love to find a recipe for it.

In the crisps line, does anyone remember those tiny puffed crisps shaped like pigs that were ( appropriately enough) bacon flavoured I think?
I’m also now remembering Macintosh’s Highland Toffee bars…I think both these and the pig crisps were available from the school ‘tuck shop’ in less health conscious days!

Banana Highland Toffee. I have many fillings!

Lemon puff biscuits.

Home bargains - i always treat myself to a pack, although they are round now not rectangular.

I always hated them! My dad loves faggots to this day and eats them regularly. You can get them in aldi, Sainsbury's and iceland
