Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Yes Im going to add white pepper to the shopping list as well

I also wondered the other day what fried bread pudding would be like with a meat dish, similar to PP mentioning spotted dick with lamb.

Bowies · 18/11/2024 22:39

I like rice pudding but very happy to see the back of semolina, tapioca puddings blancmange, suet pudding.

We used to have butterscotch tarte as part of school dinners which was one of the better puddings

Seen one in freezer aisle in Lidl for £3.99

Not exactly old fashioned, but I loved the Findus French bread pizzas from the 80's.

I can never seem to find lemon curd tarts anymore. They used to the yellow one in a pack of jam tarts but that's now been replaced with apricot.

Tesco sell them. It’s their own brand

The Dairy Diary cookbook editions fom the eighties and earlier are great for all these sorts of recipes.

we always had the Dairy Diaries. both of my parents had milkrounds, so it was inevitable. I LOVED them.

Saw a Vesta Curry (in a box, dehydrated ingredients) pop-up when doing an online shop. Cannot believe these still exist. Nearly ordered one to amaze the children with.

I've got a few of the chow meins stashed in my cupboards. I bought one out of curious nostalgia some time back, and expected it to be disgusting, but it was actually really tasty. nothing AT ALL like an ACTUAL chow mein, but a tasty dinner for sure. and the deep fried flat noodles! I LOVED those so much, and they don't seem to be something I can find outside of those.
the fried noodles with the over salty soy sauce sachet was so good.

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

Hate blancmange with a passion, but live your username 🤣

HelloYouGuys · 19/11/2024 04:36

Vol au vents! Loved them at a buffet!

Vol au vents were always the first plates of buffet food to disappear... usually chicken & mushroom or prawn cocktail .... egg mayonnaise wasn't as popular, but still didn't hang around long.

I remember being newlywed, and making them for relatives that came for "tea"... I thought I was dead posh!

Blancmange has gelatin in it too, not just cornflour. Otherwise it wouldn’t set.

You don't have to use gelatin,.... if you're plant based, you could use Agar Agar.

HelloYouGuys · 19/11/2024 04:45

Vesta "exotic" meals... I can only remember beef risotto, paella and chow mein....

HelloYouGuys · 19/11/2024 04:58

Many (too many) years ago when I used to eat meat.
I made liver onion and mushrooms in a red wine gravy.... served up with proper mash and whatever veg you like.

Also made a savoury bread and butter pud.
So I'd butter slices of bread, then spread any kind of mustard on the slices.
Layer up the bread and grated cheese, then pour over an egg and milk mixture, seasoned with salt and pepper.
Let it stand for at least an hour... I used to prep the taters and veg whilst the pud was standing.
Put it in a hot oven and bake for (I think) about 50 mins.
It was basically ready to serve when the top layer was crunchy with the top layer of bread, and cheese.
The underneath was soft and creamy cheesy, and the whole thing rose to the top of my Pyrex casserole dish....
It would take less time cooking if I made smaller individual ones.

I remember making jelly, and just befit set, I'd use a stick blender to introduce air, then left it to set. The result would be a lovely light bubbly jelly.

Blancmange, the raspberry one, which you can’t get anymore. Pearce Duff still do the other flavours.
Semolina, not out of a tin.
Yes, tins of Heinz sponge puddings. I loved those.

Soft herring roe, on hot buttered toast.
Creamed mushrooms in a tin.

Gatecrashermum · 19/11/2024 05:50

Beef stew with suet dumplings cooked in the oven

Steamed puddings made with beef suet

Treacle tart made with brown breadcrumbs

Sliced potatoes baked in milk with sliced onions and a bayleaf

Syllabub

A large bowl of proper french chocolate mousse (made just with eggs, sugar, butter, chocolate and maybe cointreau - no cream!). Served with a large spoon

Baked gammon ham with baked potatoes and tinned sweetcorn for tea

Rock cakes (first thing I baked aged 4!)

Teacake (a light sponge made with tea)

Bread pudding and bread and butter pudding made with stale sliced white bread (no fancy brioche!)

Gatecrashermum · 19/11/2024 05:53

Rice pudding cooked in the oven!

Yes, I love blancmange!! It's very easy to make too.

And semolina should make a comeback - impossible to find in shops (although according to DH it brings back bad memories of school so he's probably happy it's nowhere to be seen...)

I’m sure Ambrosia still do it.

You can still get raspberry blancmange

Yes, creamed mushrooms from a can on toast 😋

DustyLee123 · 19/11/2024 06:23

I don’t use salt, other than on chips, because it’s bad for us. But last week I put loads of salt on a buttered jacket potato, and by god it was good, just like when I was a kid.

augustusglupe · 19/11/2024 06:26

Thanks for sourcing that for me Chessie ☺️

LisaD76 · 19/11/2024 07:27

Would love to get the Heinz tinned puddings again, the supermarket ones don’t compare, also struggle to get birds raspberry trifle these days, can no longer buy arctic roll or those little raspberry ripple mousses we had with school dinners that you could buy in packs of 10 in Iceland (think Iceland did a chocolate one too)
