Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

We make boiled Cabbage and bacon. It's a traditional Irish dish. You boil the Cabbage and bacon rump in the same pot. Served with boiled potatoes.

@Puzzledandpissedoff , could your friend get some dried peas on line and make his own?

I suggested that, NQOCDarling, but don't know if he's tried it yet ... he's still sulking because he can't just nip in somewhere and get his little pot Grin

Ocado and Amazon do it

Beef dripping ( from the Sunday roast ) on toast with salt and pepper for breakfast on Monday morning 😋

Milk puddings, semolina, baked rice pudding, baked custards, all perfect for cold weather and cheap.

My adult kids do this with beef dripping. I couldn't face it but they bloody love it.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/11/2024 18:09

My family make faces, but turkey dripping on toast is the best ever boxing day breakfast!

Treaclewell · 17/11/2024 18:10

I haven't read the whole thread yet as I was searching my file for gypsy tart written out for me by the school cook,so I hope I'm not duplicating.

Recipe

short crust flan case
I small tin evaporated milk
4oz soft brown sugar.( I use light brown, somone told the baker muscovado)

Method
Whip the milk until volume doubles
Stir in the sugar
Beat until like fudge (I assume not set fudge)
Fill the flan case and set in a warmish oven ( I expect the was done as the oven cooled after cooking a batch of oven cooked first course.)

I have done it successfully, but it makes too much for one. The baker is easier.!

Blancmange has gelatin in it too, not just cornflour. Otherwise it wouldn’t set.

I’ve never put gelatine in. The cornflour makes it set.

Blancmange. Cannot find it in the shops anywhere.

Its available in most supermarkets. If not, make or buy a custard and flavour it with milkshake syrup then set with gelatine.

Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet.

No thats milk jelly. Blancmange is custard based

Cheese pudding, like my DM used to make. Alas I never got the recipe from her, never quite sure of quantities of breadcrumbs, cheese, milk and eggs. Utterly delicious comfort food though - must do a Google search for one that hasn’t been poncified with e.g. aubergines and garlic, so that it no longer appears so shamefacedly British - in some people’s opinions, that is.

I have now chucked it out, but I'm almost certain one of the Dairy Diary cook books from the 80's had a recipe for cheese pudding, though for some reason I'm thinking they called it a cheese foot. I could well be wrong. Or there's this

Treacle tart. Can't find a decent one in any shop.

Waitrose have a fabulous one!

I’m not sure if it should make a comeback, but with news reports that there is taramasalata shortage, I was reminded of cod’s roe in tins that used to get served sliced and fried like a fishcake. I’m guessing taramasalata could be made with tinned cod’s roe.

You can still buy tinned cod roe, its on the tinned sardine shelf. My cat adores them.

Artic roll. I’ve been looking in shop freezers for months and I’ve sadly concluded no one makes it anymore.

This does me. Had forgot it existed but I'm going to buy some tomorrow. 10/10

They have the tins of semolina by the rice pudding in my Tesco

And packets of semolina in or near the rice/ lentil/ dried beans/ pulses section if you want to make it yourself. Waitrose, Sainsbury's and M and S too.

CatsMother66 · 17/11/2024 18:18

Kunzle cakes!
My Mum often mentions them and I can just about remember them too. How lovely it would be if she could taste them once more.

Many thanks to all the lovely pp’s who recommended different varieties of Lemon Puff biscuits, I have tried several, including Bolam’s and those from the Irish & Eastern European section ps in Morrisons, Asda, and Tesco, they are sadly not the same, near and a nice change, but not the same as my memories. 😢

HaleyBrookeandPeyton · 17/11/2024 18:23

I think it was called hot chocolate crunch. From a packet mix - mix with milk, heat it up and then pour some sort of crunch over the top. It was the pudding of dreams after a roast on sunday!

Ilovemyshed · 17/11/2024 18:12

Blancmange is a milk based pudding thickened with gelatine or carrageen. I don't think I've seen it sold pre-made commercially.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/11/2024 18:26

@RB68, I still make a lemon meringue pie at least once a year, for dh’s birthday and e.g any ‘bring a pudding’ barbecue. Admittedly it’s a bit of a faff to make properly, from scratch, but I do like the way it uses both the zest and juice of the lemons, and both the yolks and the whites of the eggs. It’s always hugely popular.

No.
It was a powder, already flavoured & sweetened, that was mixed with hot milk, & left to set in a mould.

Purrdrop · 17/11/2024 18:27

@Busywithsomething I think it was called Treacle Tart with Cornflakes or something like that. Had it at school, the next best thing to Chocolate Crunch with pink custard.

@Tinkerbellflowers @Gumbo I miss blancmange, especially in rabbit form with green jelly lettuce.

Been inspired to root out my Dairy Diary cookbook from 40-odd years ago.

I love tapioca but it's really hard to find the dried stuff now.
