Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Yes, I love blancmange!! It's very easy to make too.

And semolina should make a comeback - impossible to find in shops (although according to DH it brings back bad memories of school so he's probably happy it's nowhere to be seen...)

Dry semolina (the type that can be reconstituted with boiling water) is available in Waitrose and Sainsbury, I only know this because we decided it was cold enough outside to have semolina and a blob of compote to make it go all pink 😊

you can also get Birds instant Semolina in Tesco. It's lovely but quite sugary.

My dad used to hollow out a marrow, stuff with mince and onion and cook in the oven. Still makes me shudder to think about it.

Oh stuffed marrow, but Mince, onion, herbs, breadcrumbs, cheese, served with home made tomato ragusa, boiled potatoes and green veg. Hollowed marrow, stuffed. It was delicious. I had forgotten it. My grannie made it.

Cheese pudding, like my DM used to make. Alas I never got the recipe from her, never quite sure of quantities of breadcrumbs, cheese, milk and eggs. Utterly delicious comfort food though - must do a Google search for one that hasn’t been poncified with e.g. aubergines and garlic, so that it no longer appears so shamefacedly British - in some people’s opinions, that is.

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER Cheese pudding recipe (supposed to serve 2, but I love it so much I could eat this all by myself) : 2 oz breadcrumbs, 1/2 pint milk, 1 egg, 1/2 Oz butter, 2 Oz grated cheese, pinch cayenne pepper nutmeg and salt. Heat the milk. Add breadcrumbs, seasoning and butter and leave to stand for half an hour. Separate the egg and stir the yolk plus the grated cheese into the breadcrumb mixture and then fold in the stiffly beaten egg white. Put in buttered souffle dish and bake in a moderate oven for about 30-45 minutes until it's set in the middle. I sometimes add a finely chopped onion along with the breadcrumbs.

Lidl do an own brand box of rose and violet creams. Not as nice as Hotel Chocolat but they do in an emergency.

Love the fact that the need for rose and violet creams might constitute an emergency 😆

My memories of food from the 60's and 70's are probably best left there - stuffed lamb's hearts, anyone? Or the dreaded baked apples - hollowed out, and with currants in the middle. I never want to see another one of those in my lifetime!

This thread has reminded me of cornflake tart. DH has fond childhood memories of that, so I might look up a recipe.

God I used to love stuffed hearts, don’t think I could eat them now, stuffed apples, yuk, stuffed peppers, loved belly strips but again couldn’t eat now, the good old days.
i remember going to a friends house for tea at 11 years old and got liver and bacon, yum, imagine giving that to a kid now 😆

Lovemusic82 · 17/11/2024 17:33

Loved puddings as a child (still do)

Queen of puddings (my favourite)

lemon crumble? It was like lemon curd with a crumble topping? I’m sure there were other flavours too?

Ground rice pudding? Moulded in the shape of a rabbit. My mum would add a few raisins to look like rabbit poop.

I can never seem to find lemon curd tarts anymore. They used to the yellow one in a pack of jam tarts but that's now been replaced with apricot.

decent garden centres and farm shops usually have them

daisychain01 · 17/11/2024 17:34

We've been eating different squashes and pumpkins since before Halloween- still got 3 big ones in the garage.

Not sure if it's classed as making a comeback but we can't remember being able to buy such a wide range of types from big green and orange ones to the tiny little white ones called Munchkins [cute emoticon] until this year. They all have such different flavours.

BarbaraVineFan · 17/11/2024 17:37

Those mentioning stuffed marrow, my mum used to make them stuffed with sausagemeat and onion, with some kind of delicious gravy and served with mash. Yum!

@cherrytree12345 I think the dessert was called Sweetheart, it was delicious.

I have found blancmange mix in B and M and Home Bargains quite recently, I used to make hot custard with the strawberry one when my children were small and called it Tubby Custard like the Tellytubbies!

Mushy peas. Proper mushy peas. Dried peas, soaked 12 hours, cooked with herbs and stock
Not bloody blended garden peas!

I introduced a visiting Californian friend to these and they became an obsession - no day was complete until he'd visited a chippy and bought a pot

Now he's home and heartbroken because they're just not popular there. Refried beans just aren't the same, and though he could get marrowfat peas and make his own he insists only the British version would do

wastingtimeonhere · 17/11/2024 17:40

I miss Toast Toppers, but do a makeshift version using Campbell condensed soup adding mushrooms or sweetcorn to make a Topper.

Semolina is in the Indian/East Asian section of our Asda - we have it for breakfast quite a lot!

duckduckgooseduckagain · 17/11/2024 17:41

@thatsawhopperthatlemon ooh I fancy a baked apple with currants in now.

ChessieFL · 17/11/2024 17:43

I’m really disappointed. This thread reminded me of a cookbook my mum had, which was a notebook that she’d written recipes in but also stuck in ones cut out from newspapers and magazines. I used to love looking through it because there were lots of recipes that to me felt old fashioned and/or had funny names. Anyway I asked her about it today and turns out it fell apart so she threw most of it away. She saved some of the pages but not the really old recipes I remember. Gutted.

Tinned marrofats are almost as good, and would have those over garden peas any day. Having said that, you can't beat eating a freshly picked pea from the po!

NQOCDarling · 17/11/2024 17:45

@Puzzledandpissedoff , could your friend get some dried peas on line and make his own?

I got excited when I saw them in poundtretcher recently and bought some, so disappointed to find they are an updated version that as per modern times taste rubbish and very little like the original.

Much like cremola foam a wee tin was £5 ...so so disappointing I used it cos of the price tag .

Dream topping. Cant find it anywhere

Oh yes! 😋

I think Mr Kipling do one

Mr Kipling can do one those mass produced monstrosities have to be the worst cakes in creation.

Feelingathomenow · 17/11/2024 17:51

blamange set in a rabbit shaped mould. With green jelly chopped up as grass round in food of the Gods if you’re a 5 year old stuffed out on sausages, and cheese and pineapple on sticks.

last nights potatoes fried with cheese.

cheese and onion layered pie.

home made rice pudding (complete with skin)

before I became vegetarian used to love dripping on toast with added salt.

stuffed marrow chips (in the chip pan) and gravy was many favorite- used to be so excited to come home to this.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/11/2024 17:51

Lemon crumble? It was like lemon curd with a crumble topping? I’m sure there were other flavours too?

My own recipe, @Lovemusic82:

Flesh only from 6 or more navel oranges (must be navel ones)
Spoon lemon curd over liberally, minimum of half a pot
Top with crumble, preferably substituting some of the flour with oats and using demerare sugar
Bake and enjoy - there won't be any left!!

Tip: to obtain orange flesh halve them, use a sharp knife to separate each segment from the mebrane, then scoop each out by driving a spoon in and under from the edge

You can thank me later Grin

chicken parmigiana
mulligatawny soup

recklessgran · 17/11/2024 17:54

Potato puffs from the school tuck shop.
@BarbaraVineFan I'm jealous - love a cheese and potato pie. I scrunch up a bag of cheese and onion crisps and put on top of mine before baking for extra crunch although I do really love the cheesy crust on top especially when the cheese browns - yum!
