Old-fashioned foods which should make a comeback

I am just making a cheese and potato pie for lunch, which I last ate circa 1988. It's basically mashed potatoes mixed with an egg and a fuck load of cheese, more cheese on top and then baked in the oven. Bloody lovely, relatively cheap and filling.

Which other old-fashioned foods do you make /have you made recently which you think should make a comeback?

Been inspired to root out my Dairy Diary cookbook from 40-odd years ago.

Was that the Unigate one? I think my mum had one.

Many thanks to all the lovely pp’s who recommended different varieties of Lemon Puff biscuits, I have tried several, including Bolam’s and those from the Irish & Eastern European section ps in Morrisons, Asda, and Tesco, they are sadly not the same, near and a nice change, but not the same as my memories. 😢

I got very excited when I found Lemon Puff biscuits again. But I agree with you, they are not the same, the ones I remember had a sticky sweet coating on the outside, the ones now are dry almost like water biscuits.

Janeypatterson · 17/11/2024 18:35

Purrdrop, yes, the Dairy Diary cookbooks were bought directly from the milkman.

The cocktail sticks with a cube of cheese, ham, and pineapple

Fruitcakes or buns that contain lurid green, candied Angelica. I used to nibble bits of it while my mum baked.

There should be more huge sticky buns of sorts in cafes. I love a proper cinnamon roll as much as the next person, but sometimes a brew just suits a sticky, soft, almost plain bun better.

Omg candied Angelica!!!! I'd completely forgotten this existed!

Mine is coconut ice hence per my user name!

I miss Crawford's iced shortie biscuits. They had fluted edges, with a Neapolitan style icing on them (chocolate vanilla strawberry striped) and were very popular in the 80s.

I also miss Chambourcy's Hippo Mousse and Smith's Tubes crisps.

@RB68, I still make a lemon meringue pie at least once a year, for dh’s birthday and e.g any ‘bring a pudding’ barbecue. Admittedly it’s a bit of a faff to make properly, from scratch, but I do like the way it uses both the zest and juice of the lemons, and both the yolks and the whites of the eggs. It’s always hugely popular.

I'm not surprised it was popular, GETTINGLIKEMY MOTHER; it's the zest which makes the difference and gives the depth juices and flavourings just don't

I'll remember until the day I die a little patisserie in La Rochelle who made his tartes au citron by hand with the sweetest of pastry and tartest of fillings. They're still the best dessert I've ever eaten, and I just wanted to kidnap him

thequeenoftarts · 17/11/2024 18:42

This thread has inspired me to start making some of these once more, so thank you.

I love blancmange, dream topping, angel delight, proper bread n butter pudding, sago, tapioca, semolina, custards that are really thick, trifles, baked apples with currants in them and loads of cinnamon . My mouth is watering here lol

Gypsy tart and lardy cake!

Go to Kent or Bath respectively! In Bath the place to go for lardy cake is the bakery on Twerton high street. Gypsy tart is sold all over the place in Kent but if you want a wonderful dinner first go to Rocksalt in Folkestone and have their gypsy tart for dessert

@moonlight1705

A pub we regularly camp at has faggots on the menu, I won't touch them and don't really like their food to be honest (food snob here) but it's such a nice setting for a rally

Pilchards on toast was a staple in our house, delicious.

My mum would share a tin of pilchards between my brother and the cat, they're the only ones who would eat them 😆

We used to have faggots, peas and mash a lot as kids. I haven't seen them many places since the 90s.

I regularly buy fresh homemade faggots from my local butcher, can’t beat them in a nice onion gravy with garden peas & chips.

I love making golden syrup sponge. I used to love the ones you get in a tin, but they stopped making it. It reminds me of the only food I could eat from primary school dinners. Sometimes I'd get seconds! Oh the joy. 🤣

My mum used to make this. Hot with vanilla ice cream. My favourite. I simply can't make it like she did and she's not able to make it anymore.

I can never seem to find lemon curd tarts anymore. They used to the yellow one in a pack of jam tarts but that's now been replaced with apricot.

Haven’t read the full thread but Morrisons sell a 6 pack of lemon curd tarts

mitogoshigg · 17/11/2024 18:52

@jmh740

Gypsy tart and lardy cake!

Don't you mean Gypsy Tart and half an apple?

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 17/11/2024 18:53

I think we should open a restaurant selling old school favourites, with someone playing assembly hymns on the piano.

Pippatpip · 17/11/2024 18:54

My granny made the best stuffing. Yummy when cold. She did something with boiled onion, used the water to bind breadcrumbs, seasoning. But I can't seem to replicate it. Does anyone have a recipe using just breadcrumbs - no sausagemeat.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/11/2024 17:13

We hardly ever have enough leftovers - I have to cook spuds and cabbage on purpose!

That’s my problem too! It all gets gobbled up before I can make my beloved bubble & squeak.

I shall start making extra, extra potatoes and cabbage!

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · 17/11/2024 18:57

Nobody ever remembers these, but, you know Pot Noodles? - well, at some point around 1985, they made Pot Sweets. My favourite was the apple crumble one. Absolutely bloody delicious. Barely a week goes by that I don't think of them.

Ilovemyshed · 17/11/2024 18:10

Its available in most supermarkets. If not, make or buy a custard and flavour it with milkshake syrup then set with gelatine.

no. just add more cornflour stirred to a slurry with milk to the custard and warm it to thicken it.

Janeypatterson · 17/11/2024 18:57

Piano should be in need of tuning.

"Isn't blancmange just jelly made with milk instead of water? I don't remember it ever coming from a packet."

I always made it from a packet.

MogTheSillyCat · 17/11/2024 19:00

just thought of another one- bread & butter pudding.

My mum made this every couple of weeks growing up, it was her specialty!
She managed to get it all lovely and crusty on top but creamy and delicious on the bottom.
Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream - that was a real treat.

Kitkat1523 · 17/11/2024 19:00

My Nan used to make brandy snaps for us at Christmas 😋
