Blue badge rules

So if a blue badge holder drives to a location and parks only where a blue badge holder is allowed to park. Then let's someone else out of the car and waits for them, is this technically breaking blue badge rules because they are not the ones doing the walking but the able bodied person is?

check with your local council. my badge is issued by them, and i had to fill in a form and attend a physio assessment for it, i can walk 50 meters with a walking stick/crutches, but not without them, so qualified (Also because i get the shakes from pain/exhaustion after walking around tesco)

My issue is less with your MIL parking on the double yellows, and more with her putting her badge that she needs at risk.. as i said, if a traffic warden cops her doing that then she will lose it.

I can’t see how this is true, and I understand you’ve repeated it twice, she can easily tell the warden she is just gathering herself and about to get out and do so. There is no reason for her to lose her badge,

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:37

There is nowhere to park or else he would drive there himself! This is the whole problem.

then she does what everyone else does, drops him off and finds somewhere else to park, not the double yellows while she mis-uses her badge. She cannot use it while she stays IN the car.

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 21:39

I have a blue badge and quite often I have to sit in my car for 5 mins before getting out. I have to let my heart rate lower or I could collapse getting out of the car. Same when I get back to the car, I can't drive off straightaway or I could collapse at the wheel. The amount of times I've had "KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK! If you're not getting out of the car can you leave please?" Sick to fucking death of having to share my medical issues with random strangers. I know people will say that I shouldn't do, but if I don't explain then they will just think they were correct!

it is true, i've seen it happen. The rules are VERY clear, you cannot use your badge to benefit other people. so using it to park and not getting out of the car is misuse and you will get it confiscated if you're caught doing it.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:40

He has to drive there. She only drives to about 2 places on her own. She drives to our house then they switch cars and go off for a nice little joy ride to the hospital. So she is waiting in the passenger seat.

I’m sorry that makes no sense, she can just say she needs to gather herself and is getting out . Mo warden is going to say I’m sorry you can’t do that your badge is being confiscated. Not one.

there is nothing wrong with what you're doing.. it can sometimes take me 5-10 mins to gather myself and my pain levels to drop enough to drive once back in the car. If you're getting out, or just got in, you're not misusing it.

Sometimes he gets a taxi but that is £15 each way and no he does not qualify for PIP or any other benefits so it’s not really affordable.

Why doesn't he qualify for PIP? I have MS and get full PIP & have a Motability car & blue badge. But, even before I was diagnosed and only had a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, I got full PIP then as well. I would keep trying for it, personally

If they were in the driver's seat, yes. In the passenger seat, with the driver nowhere to be seen.... that would be a misuse of the BB.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:44

He has never applied for PIP. He does not meet any of the criteria. Can cook, wash, etc independently.

ExitPursuedByABare · 15/11/2024 21:44

I can walk well over a mile, with my crutch. I still qualify for a blue badge 🤷‍♀️

I disagree, and it does not matter what they think. I sometimes have to rest before I can exit my car as well, and if anybody behaved the way that you have described, I would just point to my badge, and that is all. They have no right to have anything explained to them. They are not traffic wardens.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:45

Mobility is affected as above. Also gets a lot of nerve pain in legs and arms which impacts sleep. And of course fatigue. But no other serious symptoms yet.

And how does any of that make it better. It doesn't matter who drives

She should drop him at the door and find somewhere to park legally then go back for him

I'm taking my mum to hospital on Monday. I'll drop her at the door and despite having a valid blue badge I'll go and find somewhere to park. Then when she's finished she'll phone me and I'll go from where I'm parked to the entrance to pick her up. THATS what your MIL should do when she's on her 'jolly' to the hospital

So can I? I'm a single parent!

You can also work and receive PIP. I think you're misunderstanding what PIP is for.

Maybe that’s because you use a crutch? He doesn’t use any mobility aids.

Don’t you have to get a certain number of points though based on your needs? He doesn’t really have any?

VegTrug · 15/11/2024 21:47

@Babush Millions & millions of adults who get PIP, live alone! I don't know where you've seen the criteria but you've misunderstood it

with MS, my BFF has it, he's lost feeling to his knees and elbows pretty much, he only recently got his blue badge via his council, still hasn't applied for PIP.

He can walk a mile if he wanted to, and does, frequently, but on the bad days he trips over his feet, or is in so much nerve pain he can barely function, or has severe fatigue related to neuro symptoms.

It may be worth him applying, just to see.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:48

I will have a look at the forms. I’ve read discussions on here where it sounds like you need to be unable to cook a meal and things like that.

I understand you’re trying to scare her into stopping but again. She can just say her son has went ahead, she’s just gathering herself and about to get out, . No warden is going to confiscate her badge for this. I’m sorry, but it’s true.

I think he should apply as that sounds pretty clear cut. My DH has some loss of sensation in his hands and feet but it’s relatively mild, eg can’t tell if the washing is dry by touching it.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:51

Can still type fine luckily!

my friends still pretty functional.. he has to confirm he's touching/holding things visually now, and i despair at the amount of times he's burned himself cooking because he can't feel how hot stuff is >.<

Honestly though, having spent a week at his last month, you wouldn't know there was anything wrong other than him being very tired.. i jokingly offered him my wheelchair the one day as i was having a good day, and he wasn't... but he's still insistent on appearing 'normal'.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:58

This is like my DH. You can’t tell there’s anything wrong even if you spend quite a lot of time with him. The only real give away is the very slow walking speed after any kind of distance. He does tell people to go on ahead but they feel rude so sort tip toe along side.
