Blue badge rules

So if a blue badge holder drives to a location and parks only where a blue badge holder is allowed to park. Then let's someone else out of the car and waits for them, is this technically breaking blue badge rules because they are not the ones doing the walking but the able bodied person is?

I'm sorry but I simply don't believe that you ONLY misuse her blue badge by parking on double yellows. I think you're only saying that now because you've been called out on the abuse on here.

I'm willing to bet a lot of money that she also misuses it when she goes to the eg supermarket with family members and doesn't get out the car.

I see it all the time and it literally means I have to go home again without the food I need for my kids.
I wish the many (many) abusers of blue badges would stop and think of it in this way. ie a cancer patient now cannot park at all or someone who needs to get their wheelchair out using the extra space of blue badge spaces - but people who abuse their relatives blue badge spaces just think of it as a "perk".

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:21

It’s only for the hospital because it’s literally impossible to park there sometimes. He’s working and can’t be out of the office once a month for hours on end.

I don’t really care if it’s technically a misuse. I think it’s impossible to prove one way or the other. Maybe we’re taking MIL for lunch or another appointment and this is just a stop on the way. It’s pretty stressful trying to hold down a full time job, manage a chronic condition and multiple hospital appointments. Being able to actually park at the hospital makes a huge amount of difference.

Try being a cancer patient who is permanently disabled through cancer surgery and is on chemo. And has two small kids. And is a single parent. And has to get food for them and manage all her own appointments without any family to help. That's genuinely stressful. And it's doubly so when abusive arseholes abuse the blue badge scheme as a "perk" to make my difficult and truly stressful life even harder. FFS.

Sometimes he gets a taxi but that is £15 each way and no he does not qualify for PIP or any other benefits so it’s not really affordable.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:23

Why are we playing disability top trumps here? All disabilities are shit. We should be trying to help each other not get into a game of who is more deserving. That ultimately helps no one

So that screws the oncology patient like myself from being able to park in a disabled space with her genuine blue badge for her oncology appointment. And can only walk about four metres.

But if that means your able bodied (he is able bodied else he would qualify for a BB) doesn't have to take too much time of work, you think that's ok? Fucking appalling

Your MIL abusing her blue badge isn't "helping each other out". It's the complete opposite.

But you're not helping another disabled person. You're screwing them for your own convenience.

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:27

I’m not screwing anyone. MIL parks on double yellows outside of the hospital while DH goes in.

It’s not a case of top trumps, it’s about eligibility. If your husband isn’t eligible for a blue badge then no matter how you try to justify it he can’t use the space

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:29

There’s a world of difference between ‘able bodied’ and ‘qualifies for a blue badge’. I think the walking requirement is something like 50m. My DP can currently walk about a mile at a slow and steady pace. I don’t call that able bodied for a man in his early 40s.

Try to justify if it however you want you are in the wrong and you risk your MIL losing her badge.

and no being on the way to go for dinner elsewhere isn’t an justification either

Oh my actual god. A MILE?!!!! he can walk a mile, albeit slowly and you are using blue badge spaces? Fucking disgraceful.

I don't even know where to start with this one. If he was entitled to a blue badge, he can apply and get one. If not, he should benefit from it. There are no grey areas here.

My very elderly Mum has a blue badge, she walk very far because of breathing problems. A couple of times I have used it without her being in the car when I parked up. However, this is purely because I am picking her up from the building she's inside. And it's for 5 minutes whilst she comes out.

Mum isn't in a wheelchair. She doesn't need all that extra room in a disabled space to get out of a car but she couldn't get out if the space were very cramped. If she/we go somewhere and there is an alternative space near the the door with a bit of car door space, we wouldn't park in a disabled space. We'd leave it for someone who had to deal with a chair.

A mile?? Are you for real. Anyone that can walk a bloody mile DOES NOT need a blue badge

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 15/11/2024 21:31

If the badge holder intended to get out of the car but found when they got there that they couldn't - not breaking the rules
If the badge holder never intended to get out - breaking the rules
So impossible for an observer to say.

My best friend can walk miles and miles, but her BB is for something not related to walking.
BB are not just for people who can't walk far.

He doesn’t have or qualify for a blue badge. I never said he should have one. I said MIL parks on the double yellows outside of the hospital to facilitate hospital appointments.

XenoBitch · 15/11/2024 21:35

If the named BB is not getting out of the car, then you have to park in a normal space. That is a condition of having a BB. Otherwise you could just take the BB holder with you everywhere so you could be a CF with parking.
I remember someone here saying that the BB holder does not even have to be in the car.. you can use their badge if you are running errands for them... which is bullshit.

check with your local council. my badge is issued by them, and i had to fill in a form and attend a physio assessment for it, i can walk 50 meters with a walking stick/crutches, but not without them, so qualified (Also because i get the shakes from pain/exhaustion after walking around tesco)

My issue is less with your MIL parking on the double yellows, and more with her putting her badge that she needs at risk.. as i said, if a traffic warden cops her doing that then she will lose it.

Yes but your misusing your MILs badge for him. If he can walk a mile he can walk from a car parked legally.

I hope someone spots the misuse and takes her badge off her

Babush · 15/11/2024 21:37

There is nowhere to park or else he would drive there himself! This is the whole problem.

Then someone drops him off or he’s gets a taxi/public transport. Literally nothing you are saying justifies abuse of the badge. Nothing. Utterly shameful.
