Which red wine should I try?

I know almost nothing about wine, so am a bit clueless but I'd like to branch out a bit. I really like a glass of red now the nights are drawing in but was stood in Tesco earlier and was at a bit of a loss. I know I like full bodied, smooth reds. I've had some that have been too thin or acidic. But when I look at all of the different types I don't actually know what I'm looking for!

I really like Barefoot Malbec. That would be my standard go-to bottle of wine.

I've tried some of the Jam Shed ones and the Jammy Red Roo and they are very drinkable but very sweet. They are smooth (which I like) but probably a bit too sweet for what I'm looking for.

I've also tried Porta 6 which I liked.

I don't really want to waste money buying bottles I don't end up liking so if I like the above and you can recommend something to me I'd be very grateful!

Campo Viejo Rioja Tempranillo is a favourite and less than £10 a bottle

afaloren · 15/11/2024 16:33

DH likes 19 Crimes.

Trivento is my favourite. Asda extra special Malbec is decent too.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 15/11/2024 16:37

Cotes du Rhone

That's one of my favourites, I AKSO LIKE JAMMY RED ROO. I have just bought the 6 bottles Christmas Big Reds from Laithwaites with a £50 voucher I got for my Birthday, they look like they will be good. Chilean Merlot is nice and Argentinian Malbec. Anything around a tenner a bottle should be decent. With red I think food pairing is more important than it is with white, if you're just gonna drink no worries, but some wine will taste fab with spag bol for example and awful with cheesy sauces.

Turmerictolly · 15/11/2024 17:07

Italian reds might be a good place to start. Maybe a Primitivo or a Barolo for something really nice.

tonyhawks23 · 15/11/2024 17:08

Il second crimes 19 my current favourite

Healingsfall · 15/11/2024 17:10

Try Lidl for wines, it's so much cheaper and they have some lovely ones! Then you could experiment more without feeling guilty on price if you're not keen.

I like a carmenere, a melbec and a cabernet sauvigion. You'll also find you prefer wines from certain countries too as you go along.

5FeetToBeExact · 15/11/2024 17:24

Another vote for 19 crimes.

I can't stand red wine. My DH however..

helpfulperson · 15/11/2024 17:29

I like the asda malbec in a box.

ThePoshUns · 15/11/2024 17:37

Ditch Jam Shed and 19 crimes for starters. Absolute garbage.
Try a French cote de Rhone.
A Spanish Rioja.
An Argentinian Malbec.
A Portuguese Duoro.

ItsAllAboutTheBass7 · 15/11/2024 17:46

19 Crimes is lovely 😍

verabarbleen · 15/11/2024 17:50

Cotes du Rhone

Agree. And I have rarely had one that I don’t like. I consider them a “safe” wine in terms of buying before having tasted them.

Tesco is currently selling a really good CdR for £10 if you have a club card: try Guigal OP.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 15/11/2024 17:59

My current tipples are Yellowtail. The merlot and the shiraz.

I think it's quite likely you'd like both Wine

LadyGabriella · 15/11/2024 18:02

Margaux M&S if you’re feeling fancy. It’s a bit more expensive but really nice. Otherwise, Côtes du Rhône.

BadgersGalore · 15/11/2024 18:03

Jammy red roo all the way.

cheekaa · 15/11/2024 18:05

Australian Shiraz.

yutulin · 15/11/2024 18:12

Get a £75 or £80 Naked wines voucher and buy a case of 12 red wines for around £50, bargain and you can try lots of different ones. I also like Good Pair Days that tries to show you how to taste wine.

PauliesWalnuts · 15/11/2024 18:15

Follow Tom Gilbey on Instagram - he’s fab at explaining things to the lay person, and it’s made me realise that there’s more to red wine than a big fruit bomb. And he doesn’t just taste the expensive stuff.

hollyblueivy · 15/11/2024 18:16

First response wins.

Bohemond23 · 15/11/2024 18:25

For your taste I agree on Italian reds first.
Second try new world pinot noir but be selective - Bread & Butter (California) is a good option.

Yes! He's great

The Wanderer. Argentina Malbec. It's usually about £10 /£12. Widely available. Don't be spooked by the label and wait until there's a 25% discount.
