Which red wine should I try?

I know almost nothing about wine, so am a bit clueless but I'd like to branch out a bit. I really like a glass of red now the nights are drawing in but was stood in Tesco earlier and was at a bit of a loss. I know I like full bodied, smooth reds. I've had some that have been too thin or acidic. But when I look at all of the different types I don't actually know what I'm looking for!

I really like Barefoot Malbec. That would be my standard go-to bottle of wine.

I've tried some of the Jam Shed ones and the Jammy Red Roo and they are very drinkable but very sweet. They are smooth (which I like) but probably a bit too sweet for what I'm looking for.

I've also tried Porta 6 which I liked.

I don't really want to waste money buying bottles I don't end up liking so if I like the above and you can recommend something to me I'd be very grateful!

Trivento Mallbec is my go to. About to open a bottle now 🍷

MullerDuller · 15/11/2024 19:53

25% off if you buy 6 bottles of wine in Sainsbury's at the moment.

AnyFucker · 15/11/2024 19:54

19 Crimes The Banished is my current favourite.

Faustino Rioja is my favourite, also Hachon in Lidl is really good. I like oaky reds.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 15/11/2024 19:56

Terre di Faiano from Waitrose is still my favourite, around the £10 mark. Also like Apothic Red, my local Sainsbury's sells it.

Trivento Malbec is good too.

Icanttakethisanymore · 15/11/2024 19:57

Côtes du Rhône for a good basic wine, Châteauneuf-du-Pape for something a bit more special.

Slugg · 15/11/2024 19:57

Aldi Chianti (the cheaper one) is beautiful and a smidge over £5. Really good wine.

My go to for very special occasions is George Dubouef Fleurie.

BoundaryLine · 15/11/2024 19:59

Dark horse Cabernet Sauvignon. There is nothing like it.

I liked all of the suggestions until I tasted dark horse Cabernet Sauvignon and then that was it for me! No turning back.

And it's always on offer so you never have to pay more than £8 a bottle.

Ditch Jam Shed and 19 crimes for starters. Absolute garbage.
Try a French cote de Rhone.
A Spanish Rioja.
An Argentinian Malbec.
A Portuguese Duoro.

couldn't agree more!

a good argentinian malbec or a french merlot are good places to start.

faustino rijocas are a favourite of mine too.

i really don't like sweet reds.

I love red wine and I've been drinking a glass (or two) for years now.

My "go to" in, for example in a restaurant I don't know, is always Malbec. It's nearly always smooth, not too much tanin.

These days, I prefer something with more of a pepper after sting.

But I still go back to an Argentian Malbec.

MyrtleStrumpet · 15/11/2024 20:18

Trivento Malbec Reserve £8.50 with club card £10 otherwise.
Dark Horse Malbec is good

It's also worth joining the Wine Society as they have very reasonably priced wine and deliver everywhere. Lots of tips and advice on their website and if you're stuck just order The Society's brand of whatever wine you like (The Society's Cabernet Sauvignon, The Society's Rioja etc). They also have gin and whisky. And you can pass your membership on in you will.

I've just discovered Barossa Ink Shiraz. It's DELICIOUS!!
Has been on offer in sainsburys for £8

Totally agree.

My friend once told me she'd splashed out on 19 crimes. Crime is the word!

My Mum recently had her usual Shiraz subbed for that Jammy Red Roo. Jam is the only way to describe it!

I agree and add a Nero D'avola to the list

TammyJones · 15/11/2024 21:16

Malbec
Cote du Rhône
Cabernet Sauvignon
Merlot
Shiraz

Crimes is ok but the above are better.
Used to have an app you hold again the bottle and character on the label would have a chat to you and tell you his crime.

serendipity70 · 15/11/2024 21:23

Definitely 19 crimes - so good!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 15/11/2024 21:31

No one's mentioned Diablo. The dark red one with the red label.

Serencwtch · 15/11/2024 22:17

If you've got a Waitrose near then try Terre de Faiano either the primitivo (orange label) or Nero d'avola (black label). They are Organic Italian red wines around £10 (look out for promotions)

Both are made using the appasimento method where they dry the grapes slightly before making the wine making them really rich & smooth. They aren't sweetened like barefoot, jam shed etc

We love Diablo, Apothique, and 19 Crimes.

Follow Tom Gilbey on Instagram - he’s fab at explaining things to the lay person, and it’s made me realise that there’s more to red wine than a big fruit bomb. And he doesn’t just taste the expensive stuff.

Yes! He's great. Been following him since he ran the marathon having a swig identifying a wine at every mile. He's very relatable. Absolutely no time for Jam Shed though 😂
