Men ‘feeling excluded’ from John Lewis ad

I just watched the new John Lewis Christmas advert on YouTube. I just spent the whole time laughing at how the comment section is filled with men complaining about the lack of men in the ad!

Their fragile male egos are being shattered because men aren’t at the forefront of a Christmas ad. We women should hang our heads in shame and solidarity for the poor, excluded men 🥲

I saw the Travel Lodge advert just now and wondered where was the post bemoaning the fact the mum is clearly having a great time, making friends at her son's uni, joining in with the party while her sad sack husband is grumpily looking on aghast that she might be having fun so they "better stay in a Travel Lodge". I can't be alone in thinking women buy these getaway stays more than men? Why target grumpy old men?

The key point here is that men do about 2% of all Christmas prep. Nobody gives a shit if they don’t like the John Lewis ad - it’s not FOR them Grin

They carve the turkey and put the batteries in the toys. Everything else ( buying and sending cards, buying Christmas presents for his parents and siblings, organising Christmas jumpers, putting up decorations, the door wreath, bloody Elf on a Shelf, getting out the nice crockery, candles, all the food and drink, not to mention the planning and cooking) is all done by women!

It's ridiculous. Men need to learn as a group, that they aren't always the main character but they really struggle - even from childhood where apparently we're giving them the wrong books (can't identify with books that don't have boys as a lead character), we talk too much (more than 30% and we're dominating the conversation according to them), movies (where we are woefully underrepresented in talking roles)

It's one bloody advert. In a world chock full of male representation, where the majority of all entertainment (from Shakespeare to most literature, to modern-day TV) is filled by a men to women's detriment. They can just grow up and deal with it.

Edited

That's a very good point about small boys not wanting books if the main character isnt male, its the same for movies and tv shows, the centering of males really does start young doesn't it.

So they acknowledge that their mere lack of appearance in something is a form of prejudice against them? They must be very empathetic towards people of different races, women, disabled people, etc. who have historically complained about the same thing.

I just read through the comments.

I agree that it’s clearly targeting women as we’re the ones who do almost all the Christmas shopping!

My DH and I watched it last night and I don’t think he even noticed the ‘lack of men’, he just said he couldn’t figure out what was going on to start with 😂

For me, the ad is okay but I’ve seen better. The best part is the song, although it doesn’t really ‘fit’ the ad.

It doesn’t seem like bot generated responses, I think there are some men who can’t fathom not being at the forefront of everything. Unfortunately I know a few like that in real life…

Sorry everyone, I just realised I’d watched the ad posted on The Guardian’s channel. Maybe the comments aren’t as bad on the John Lewis one.

One of my favourites 🤣

How nice of them to ‘help’. As opposed to women, who are never the ones ‘helping’ when doing the chores and cooking food.

Plenty of men in adverts for cleaning products now, so they can thank their lucky stars for that instead of worrying about being forgotten by JL.
