Men ‘feeling excluded’ from John Lewis ad

Moro93 · 15/11/2024 03:50

I just watched the new John Lewis Christmas advert on YouTube. I just spent the whole time laughing at how the comment section is filled with men complaining about the lack of men in the ad!

Their fragile male egos are being shattered because men aren’t at the forefront of a Christmas ad. We women should hang our heads in shame and solidarity for the poor, excluded men 🥲

@Moro93 men are not included in adverts till christmas eve! that is when they usually start and finish their shopping!

Runskiyoga · 15/11/2024 07:54

Haven't seen the ad or the outrage. I agree with better representation in adverts films and tv but could it be more interesting please. It's irritating in films when ALL the senior cops are female and ALL the men involved are portrayed as corrupt or useless or subservient. And all the women kick ass and all the men fail to catch the criminals. So dull. And ffs, if men need anything they need heroes and role models.

I think people need to step back and realise that all of these things are being picked on as “culture war” battlegrounds.

Culture wars have been fantastic for certain political groups, they are destabilising to society and they help drive people to ally with political groups, resulting in the shitshow that is now the US.

We need to get used to the fact that wherever there is an opportunity to generate a culture war argument (even over something as innocuous as Xmas ads) it is going to be leapt on and amplified now. As someone said above, amplification doesn’t even require real people, it can be AI assisted.

This is going to give the impression that these are genuine, significant issues, and the amplification will start to drag in real people who will comment in good faith (as is happening here) in a way that feeds into the argument and helps it to grow.

I don’t think people are prepared for what is coming - culture wars, disinformation, AI amplification - all this is leading to a world in which none of us will know quite what is real, what isn’t real, and everything will feel like it is polarised and divisive.

This with bells and whistles on.

This is what happened with the (pretty innocuous) Boots Christmas advert. The usual mild luke warm reaction, then a very sudden and very dramatic lurch into culture wars. It's not real.

Basicwhich · 15/11/2024 08:05

Omg the poor men. Feeling excluded from an advertisement where the target audience is mainly women.
Imagine how they'd cope if they were excluded from civil liberties for millenia 🙈

Nothatgingerpirate · 15/11/2024 08:11

Oh dear. 😂

LlynTegid · 15/11/2024 08:12

Are the men who complained expecting special adverts on Christmas Eve when they remember to get gifts?

Spirallingdownwards · 15/11/2024 08:13

JoanCollected · 15/11/2024 06:38

Actually the ad has really made me stop and think. I’m feeling a little outraged that a man has taken the credit for all the kids gifts. I think it’s time that kids are told Santa Claus is and always was a woman. And maybe we can be truthful like the boots ad… Santa Claus is a man but he actually does nothing. Mrs Claus is the real Santa Claus.

wrong ad

ElBandito · 15/11/2024 08:14

Well the men can go watch the Tesco advert then. (I do like the Tesco advert).

The Boots one is Woke this year. I'm sick and tired of Woke now.

To be honest most of us are sick and tired of crap like this post

frozendaisy · 15/11/2024 08:18

Wonder if they complain in real life to other men?

You know sit round a pub table complaining about their hurt feelings? It would do them good to talk things through.

Samcro · 15/11/2024 08:19

JoanCollected · 15/11/2024 06:35

It’s funny because across the board it’s the women who do actually prepare nearly all the Santa gifts. 100% me in our house. How about your houses?

God, imagine being so insecure and boring that a giant corporation including people who are not 'standard white heterosexual family setup' in an advert gets your blood boiling...

Nottodaty · 15/11/2024 08:24

I thought it was a lovely advert.

haven’t seen the boots one as yet.

Honestly are men that fragile? Seriously if I looked that closely I could get offended by the flash advert with the man cleaning or the dog it annoys me getting its mucky paws everywhere. The cat was annoyed she wasn’t included in the advert.

user1467300911 · 15/11/2024 08:27

Oh dear.

Well to compensate men had better move over for women in boardrooms and other positions of power where men are over represented.

PanicAttax · 15/11/2024 08:28

Most men I know openly say they "hate Christmas". It's rare they do any Christmas shopping too IME. I'm unsure why they'd be upset they're not being targeted to spend money 🤔

GoldenPineapple15 · 15/11/2024 08:30

I found the total lack of humans in the Aldi ad distressing. A carrot saves Christmas ! What an outrage !

Do any of you know any men in real life who are upset about this kind of thing?
I don't, the men I know think it is all a stupid joke. They don't care. As PP said, it is, I believe, a misinformation drive by groups with political agendas to influence and destablise society.

JulietSierra · 15/11/2024 09:13

The men I know honestly wouldn’t have noticed or cared about the lack of men in this advert.

BarbaraHoward · 15/11/2024 09:14

Just went and watched this. It's a nice enough ad, pretty unremarkable really. I knew the Boots one would rile the usual suspects but the JL one is so... Nothing. Just a normal lovely Christmas ad.

Absolutely 100% this. Do not read comments, do not engage, it is not real. Algorithms are designed to keep you online for as long as possible and have learnt that the best way to do that is to create conflict and amplify controversy. It's not real in any meaningful sense.

BarberBealShaw · 15/11/2024 09:39

Hardly filled. 99% of comments from men are about how confusing the advert is due to the fast pace.

Fizzywizzywoowoo · 15/11/2024 09:57

Maybe this ad is aimed at women , it's because women do all the hard work at Christmas! Men can do Christmas if they feel left out .

Assume you are of the Woke brigade. I think a lot more people than you realise are fed up. We only have to look at Trumps win in USA to see the silent majority feelings. It's loud and very clear.

Whiteskies · 15/11/2024 10:03

I wrote this on another thread this morning. Just listening to a Democrat talking on Radio 4 about the reasons they lost the election. On of the reasons he suggests is the narrative of ´Toxic Masculinity' they focused on during the election. It didn't do them any favours with the male or even the female electorate. He pointed out that it doesn't dilute concern for women by acknowledging the issues faced by men.

GCAcademic · 15/11/2024 10:04

We all know that the only time a man will bother himself with a shop like John Lewis is when the World Cup is on and they "need" to buy a bigger telly. I'm sure JL will consider them in their advertising campaigns then.
