Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

There's a world of difference between something going past its use by date, and something going off.
Use by dates are a complete scam. That's why we have noses.

stargazerlil · 15/11/2024 19:53

I’d get some parasite cleanse tablets just in case, nothing like a good worming to sort you out !

diddl · 15/11/2024 19:57

If it was vacuum packed I would have just binned it & not bothered about the food container for once!

Go veggie then you’ll never have to worry again…..

Soil is one of the main sources for food poisoning bacteria, people never think of vegetables as being a cause, but if the soil isn't washed off properly...

Lyraloo · 15/11/2024 19:15

Why? Do you throw everything away because someone has put a date on it? As someone else said, a few years ago everyone went to a butcher, you had no idea how old the meat was or for how long you could keep it. We smelt and tasted things, we all need to get back to that to stop all this ridiculous food waste because people don’t use their common sense!

Food poisoning bacteria can't be tasted or smelt.

usernother · 15/11/2024 20:36

I never even look at use by dates. Use my nose and my eyes.

Papyrophile · 15/11/2024 20:50

Yes, we are all going to die. Eventually. From a bit of dodgy meat, probably not, but you may feel unwell for a couple of days. Have a bucket.

And how do you think your nose and eyes are going to detect food poisoning bacteria?

Bernardo1 · 15/11/2024 21:20

Don't be f***g silly.

Do you seriously think Gazzans or Ukrainians are looking at use before dates on products they've rescued fm bombed out food sellers.
They are dying from fearful weapons, disease, lack of medicines, clean, or any water. Not calender confusion.

You at least, have access to the best, free, instant healthcare if necessary.

JohnTheRevelator · 15/11/2024 21:31

To all those posters saying that if it was off,it would smell awful,my DD and myself had an awful dose of salmonella poisoning years ago from a chicken dish that smelt and tasted absolutely fine!

@AGreatUsername I am now dying to know what happened to you and your lovely family - is everyone ok? Did you have a tummy upset? Don't be hard on your hubby, we all make mistakes. We've done the same... but didn't have a problem.

Fear not! At 1800 this evening OP wrote "I continue to live!! None of us have felt remotely dodgy today so I have high hopes this will continue."

No idea but they've managed to so far. I'm old now and have never had food poisoning.

Food poisoning bacteria can't be tasted or smelt.

The bacteria that can cause food poisoning can be in any food, in date or not.

Deeperthantheocean · 15/11/2024 22:18

One whiff of bad meat is strong and sell/use by dates usually extra cautious. If cooked well and smelt fine should be OK, only time will tell. X

Food poisoning bacteria can't be tasted or smelt.

Also nearly all bacteria that cause food poisoning can be killed by cooking and reheating food properly, so no real argument there over eating out of date food!

That's not how it works. Food poisoning pathogens and Food Bourne pathogens both work in different ways (one multiplies in the gut and the other on food given the right conditions). As they multiply they release poisonous toxins, its these toxins that cause illness and they cannot be killed through normal cooking. Then there are spores which also aren't killed through normal cooking. It's a real science but give food bacteria the conditions it needs to multiply (food, moisture, time, and temperature) and produce toxins then no amount of cooking will make it safe.

This is true. Which is why the conditions it's kept in and for how long is important to prevent food poisoning.

Food poisoning bacteria cannot be tasted/seen/smelt. You're thinking of spoilage bacteria which looks/tastes/smells disgusting but aren't what cause food poisoning.

But again, it can be destroyed by cooking food properly. People wouldn’t get food poisoning from bacteria if they didn’t cross contaminate or undercook food!

Not if the bacteria has multiplied to unsafe levels and produced toxins whilst doing so which cannot be destroyed by cooking.

I write/deliver food safety for a living so have to be factually correct. There's always so much frustrating misinformation on threads about this stuff, often innocently, more ofter through ignorance, and most peoples arguments are "just cook it well" or "sniff it", and still argue when I explain the science behind food poisoning/foodborne pathogens.

So you really think that if a food has today’s date on, it will be unfit to eat at one minute past midnight? The conditions food is kept in is nothing to do with what we are talking about!
a few years ago they did an experiment that was filmed and televised, a man ate food that started on day one as one day out of date until the end when he was eating food around three weeks past its sell by date. It was all properly cooked and never once did he get ill! I regularly eat food that’s past its sell or use by date. I use my common sense to smell it etc. I then cook it properly and if it tastes fine, I eat it😱 I’ve never been ill?

buffyspikefaithangel · 15/11/2024 22:48

@Lyraloo and relying on other people to be as well
I'm so careful with chicken at home but one meal out and that was it. At the minute I don't think I'll be eating chicken again for a very long time!
