Are we going to die?

Over dramatic title.

My husband is an idiot. On Monday I realised 2 packs of diced pork had gone off before being used. Bin day is not until Friday so I discussed the best way to dispose of them, he suggested leaving them in the fridge until bin day so they didn't stink out the bins. I had new pork arriving Tuesday so clearly told him the old stuff was on the bottom left.

This evening I was out at a college open evening, and he cooked pork kebabs. Predictably, he used the old pork, and this did not come out until we had finished eating. I once again mention it was HIS suggestion to leave it in the fridge 🙄

The bloody stuff went off 8 days ago. 8. We all ate 2/3 kebabs of it, so probably 8-10 pork chunks each.

We have 2 toilets and there are 4 of us who ate it. Are we going to have to do bathroom lottery tonight? Will we be dead by morning? Shall I offer hubby as a sacrifice if the rest of us can avoid illness?

I have been waiting to be sure you were alive before asking: where did you get the diced pork from? I looked for some in three different supermarkets last week and none of them had any, and I want to cook a pork blanquette. I know, nobody in the world makes blanquette with pork except me, and I only discovered it by accident, but it was a jolly good accident and not being able to do it again has irked me.

Get some pork steaks and dice them and you're all set Smile

TimeForATerf · 15/11/2024 18:23

I would have put it out for the foxes at night, they finish anything off, or take it away and hide it for another day.

in fact I could have thrown it on the lawn and the bloody crows would have had it in ten minutes round here.

That's becoming a definite thought; it's just that I bought diced pork last time because it was cheaper than steaks, and I wanted to do that again and couldn't.

Maybe cutting up a small shoulder joint would be the way to go, rather than steaks...

I get diced pork from Tesco!

For the poster who suggested going vegetarian, I was brought up veggie and would like to go back to it, but having 5 carnivorous males in the house it just wouldn't work for us right now.

Glad you are all ok OP . Just the thought of that would have made me ill! 🤢

There's a good deal on Tesco's Finest pork steaks at the minute (they're in the three for a tenner offer with Clubcard), highly recommend them, they were very juicy and tasty.
It's another fun-filled Friday night for me.

Nanny1965 · 15/11/2024 18:44

I wouldn't worry too much. I use to work as security in a large pork processing plant. So I had access to all areas. Often meat arrived with a bb date and they were just soaked them off and relabelled them with a better date.

Thank you! That makes me hope that they just happened not to have any when I looked, and might have it again next week.

You can get really bad food poisoning from lettuce. I should know I did a few years ago. Was worse than food poisoning from meat.

ManchesterLu · 15/11/2024 18:51

I think you'd have known if it was off. Stores (particularly supermarkets) are always overcautious with the dates on anything - because it avoids getting sued. You can completely understand why.

I was always rigid about dates, but realised recently just how much we throw out because of it. Today I ate a yogurt that "expired" on Wednesday. Not a big deal for most, but to me it feels like I'm saving the planet haha.

Those bagged salads you can get in the supermarket were being blamed for an outbreak of salmonella quite recently, and it has been known for ages that salading can and does carry listeria.

BeMintBee · 15/11/2024 18:58

Next time bag it and put it in the freezer if you want to store it before throwing it.

other than that hope you stay well. I’ve had campylobacter. Not fun!

TonTonMacoute · 15/11/2024 19:00

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger - so that's lucky!

MrPickles0001 · 15/11/2024 19:01

im known for risking foods, in my experience worse case is toilet pickles so to speak, other than that im not sure

The only time I have had really bad food poisoning is from bagged salad. It was particularly bad in the late 90s. So much so they had to change the way they washed and prepared them. Even so, I've never eaten one since.

The other gross ones are all veggie stuff.

coleslaw

Oh god, I'd be panicked by this too OP. Hopefully you're ok! In future put them straight into the outside bin to dispose of them?

Why? Do you throw everything away because someone has put a date on it? As someone else said, a few years ago everyone went to a butcher, you had no idea how old the meat was or for how long you could keep it. We smelt and tasted things, we all need to get back to that to stop all this ridiculous food waste because people don’t use their common sense!

Rice in particular has a very bad reputation, so much so that chefs are taught never to keep and reheat it.

It sometimes goes the most interesting colours if you do keep it by mistake! (For instance in the bottom of a saucepan on the stove that you forgot about.)

MontyPythonSnake · 15/11/2024 19:35

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I regularly reheat rice though. I don't reheat it twice. But I make a batch on Sunday and have it Mon & Tuesday never had a problem.

Teateaandmoretea · 15/11/2024 19:36

I won’t eat bagged salad.

It was advised against when pregnant and I was like this 🙄. I read up on it and haven’t eaten it since 🤢

I think it’s okay if you’re very careful.

My mum always made double and immediately cooked and froze the rest. We were never ill from that. I think the issue is people think meat is the danger and other things are fine but it isn’t the case.

I too regularly reheat rice, but a friend of mine who was training to be a chef had conniptions when he caught me doing it.

Apparently putting cold rice into a soup to bulk it out a bit was OK though, and I am not at all sure I understand that. It seems to me to go against what he said he'd been taught.
