How long do you think it will be before people notice?

I've started a weight loss plan and don't plan on telling people apart from DH who is doing it with me.

My starting weight is 20st 13lb (horrific I know) and I've currently lost 17lb so weigh 19st 10lb.

Even I can barely tell so far! But I'm just interested to wonder how long it will be before anyone says anything/ notices. I think it might be when I get to 17 maybe even 16 stone.

Please no fat shaming, I've heard it all before.

If you've lost weight like this before, how long was it before people noticed?

I'm one of those people who isn't very good at spotting weight loss in others. My Closest friend lost 2 stone and I didn't notice the weight change but I did notice how much easier she was walking .

MayAnneisMine · 18/01/2025 10:07

I went from 15 stone 12 to 11 stone 4 and nobody mentioned it.

Wow that's a quarter of your body weight! Well done.

They say first stone no one notices, second you notice, 3rd everyone else. I guess that depends on a number of factors, starting weight, and more importantly, how you dress. If you’re still wearing basically the same clothes, and loose and baggy a lot of folks won’t notice, if you have started dressing differently in smaller clothes, more body skimming, folks will notice.

Interesting! I am still in the same clothes, and DH says as it's winter they are baggier and covering me up more than say maybe if it was summer.

People are starting to realise that it's inappropriate to comment on other people's bodies unless they bring it up first. If you want people to compliment your weight loss then I suggest talking about your healthy eating or exercise and then it gives people the green light to voice their observation.

Yes if you’re wearing the same clothes it will be much harder to tell. Once you start wearing smaller ones and are less covered up it will become obvious.

congratuaktions by the way, you’re doing fantastic.

I don’t really get that, sure for colleagues or lose acquaintances, but for good friends and close family where you know they aren’t dying of cancer and were trying to lose it, and are happy to receive compliments, then it’s lovely to compliment the person, as it’s hard work, and regaining health is something to be celebrated.

bluesatin · 18/01/2025 10:22

I was a very fat child (still battling with weight decades later but managing not to get too huge). Anyhow I was 14 stone aged 14 and with my mother's co-operation went on a diet.
I lost 3 stones in about a year. At that point my PE teacher finally noticed. (It was a small school and we had the same PE teacher throughout.)
So, if someone who sees you regularly in gym kit - and running around - takes that long to notice I reckon you'll have to wait a while unless you start gadding about in leggings and a crop top.

Fifinebe60 · 18/01/2025 10:28

Congratulations on your loss. I began at 19 stones in May and now weigh 15 stones, people are only just beginning to notice. To be honest, I think it's only noticeable now too. Remember too that it's becoming ingrained in people to never mention weight loss as it may have been even ten years ago.
Alison Hammond who is very attractive just looked even more beautiful before her loss was that noticeable. I think the point about confidence and glow is a good one.

Tulip8 · 18/01/2025 09:54

Goodness what was your start weight? I think I'd have to lose about 10 stone to get there!

I lost three stone. I think there's two camps we fall into. Slim or fat. It's a visual thing. I went from 16/18 to 12.

Similar starting weight here. No serious comments until 3 stone loss....

I think it’s don’t comment unless you’re close enough to the person to know they are healthy and were trying, as well as would like the compliment. Like close friends and family. Anyone else just say you look great or well or some thing. Assuming that’s the case.

my friends and I talk about weight or if we are trying to lose. Weight is a big issue for many folks. So often if you’re close you know.

The key thing is also to ensure you’re not letting your own issues with your own weight get in the way, envy, resentment etc and saying nothing because of it, then pretending it’s just politically correct.

Sinkintotheswamp · 18/01/2025 12:18

Tul if you're still in the same winter clothes then they'll all notice once the warmer weather arrives and you change your wardrobe.

I've got two colleagues who I am sure are very slowly losing weight but I haven't said anything so far.

Heatherjayne1972 · 18/01/2025 13:09

Depends on how well they know you and whether you see them regularly
i lost a lot of weight on a ‘post marriage/ divorce / stress’ situation
and people who didn’t know or hadn’t seen me were far more likely to comment

it’s quite rude to mention weight or weight loss so you may find people don’t say anything.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 18/01/2025 17:20

I went from 16 stone to 11 stone and it wasn't till I hit about 3.5 / 4 stone loss that anyone said anything

Tulip8 · 29/04/2025 18:28

So I've just hit my 4 stone loss! I'm so pleased.

And only one single solitary person has mentioned it, a work colleague I see most days.

Dh suggested I buy some new, more fitted clothes as I was still in my bigger clothes and this has made a lovely improvement to my confidence. But still nothing. It's actually quite funny now 😂

I know I'm still very fat BTW, but getting there.

SW 20st 13lb
CW 16st 10lb

Well done @Tulip8! I was bigger than you and have lost over 5 stone, most of it over the last 9 months. Not one person outside my family has mentioned it 🤣.

Tulip8 · 29/04/2025 19:07

That's amazing @Motnight well done. It is funny isn't it? I do wonder if some people dont like it when very fat people start to lose weight!

OP posts:
hennybeans · 29/04/2025 19:22

I was a similar weight and for me, nobody commented until about 3 stone +. And really I didn’t start to need new clothes until about 3 stone off as well.
Personally, I’m another one who never comments on anyone’s weight unless they’re a good friend who has already mentioned being on a diet, etc.

Moier · 29/04/2025 19:31

Two stone mark for me.
I weighed 20 stone to start.. got to 18.. people noticed.
Now I'm 16 stone 8 and people notice more.
Well done and good luck.

Ah, I wonder if my friends and family all just walk around with their eyes closed then 😆
