Was making jam tarts with the toddler and turned my back for all of 30 seconds to close the fridge - turned back to see the little bugger giving her 12 week old baby brother (sat in his bouncer) a bloody spoonful of strawberry jam!! 🫠

Do I need to do anything?!

@Punok the hospital told my parents to give me evaporated milk 🫣

I'm sure he was, honestly it's not ideal but back in the day families used to wean from 12-16 weeks,I'm absolutely not advocating this but as a one off it will be fine .

I weaned my daughter at 16 weeks.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 08/11/2024 21:08

Awww that’s so cute 🥰
my third was fed petit filou at 10 weeks by his big sister, who cheerfully told me ‘mummy the baby can have proper food, he ate all of it’.
weaned him at four months…not on petit filou though 😂

What a brilliant first taste of food 🤣

That would be after dipping their dummy in condensed milk!

Got a family of these. All in their 80s and 80s now! And their own teeth.

I weaned my daughter at 16 weeks.

Me too but I'm going off mumsnet guidelines.

What were called hungrier babies were being weaned at 6 weeks on 'baby rice' 30 years ago, HV approved...They'll be fine.

Whatever a hungrier baby was 🙄

Not 30 years ago they weren’t not via official guidance anyway. The guidance was wean at 4 months.

Fair enough. I had no choice. Daughter has allergies and was losing weight rapidly.

When my firstborn was five months old I was absolutely furious with MIL because she had put her finger in DS's mouth with a tiny smear of chocolate on it.

When my secondborn was five months old, I turned around from giving his toddler brother a chocolate chip cookie to discover he'd got his hands on one too. I gave him another one. And took pictures.

A lot a lot of secondborns get introduced to solids this way. This will be a funny story very soon.

My second had a pink wafer biscuit! 🤣

Lucky kid😁

My oldest is 32. When he was a baby there was baby food available for babies from 12 weeks old, and because he was a big grizzly boy I was advised, by HV, to start weaning him then!

He's still alive 🙂

Yep. Mine is 38. The guidance back then was to start weaning from 3 to 4 months. Starting with "baby rice" then introducing tins or jars of pureed fruit and vegetables, then vegetables with pureed chicken etc.

TroysMammy · 08/11/2024 22:12

Don't worry, when I was around 3 and my baby sister aged about 18 months old I asked her if she wanted to try mustard. She nodded and said yes so I dabbed some on her tongue. I absolutely knew that mustard was "burny". I had a smack for that (around 1971 for the pearl clutchers). That wasn't my first or last smack because I was an absolute sod.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 08/11/2024 22:14

My eldest gave his baby brother a rich tea biscuit when he was about 3 months old. He was perfectly fine, if a bit put out when I took the biscuit off him

AlexaSetATimer · 08/11/2024 23:24

He will be absolutely fine - and don't freak out if his next nappy poo is a bit pink Grin

Tintackedsea · 09/11/2024 00:01

My mother fed my 12 week old (pfb!) baby mint choc chip ice cream. I was absolutely gobsmacked. This is a woman who was a midwife and didn't allow me any form of refined sugar until I was about 5!

RJnomore1 · 09/11/2024 00:06

Oh my love. I can’t stop
laughing, it’s not what you wahted but he will be totally fine.

When mine were tiny the advice was to wean from about 16 weeks. I still remember my youngest, who was preemie, getting a chip at 16 weeks so 8 corrected and the sheer joy on her face!

RJnomore1 · 09/11/2024 00:07

Sorry - she’s 20 now and incredible!

My 30 year old son was weaned at 8 weeks on the advice of my health visitor 🤫. In hindsight he probably just needed a dummy but hey ho, in those days you accepted the advice of the experts. He's still a skinny one that eats like a horse 🤣.

@BibbityBobbityToo "What were called hungrier babies were being weaned at 6 weeks on 'baby rice' 30 years ago, HV approved...They'll be fine"

Just for info- obviously the OP's baby will be fine!- but my dd is nearly 30 and I weaned her at 6 months. The recommended age for weaning then was 4 months at the earliest- I have her red book to prove it!

Enko · 09/11/2024 01:06

My 24 year olds first food was almost a salt and vinegar chrisp fed to her by big sister. I got it out of her mouth quickly. She didn't even seem to mind the vinegar taste.

Now ita a funny story at the time I worried like you do

My health board didn't have whatever a Red Book is. I'm telling you my experience and you can have my memories to prove it 🙄.

CurlewKate · 09/11/2024 06:41

@BibbityBobbityToo Fair enough. You must have had a rogue HV!

I agree, my eldest is 27 (also no red book in my area) and the advice was 12-16 weeks, I got her to 14 weeks before starting her on solids

brightpompoms · 09/11/2024 07:40

In the olden days we'd all be weaning at 12 weeks anyway. Admittedly not with jam

Punok · 09/11/2024 07:55

He's perfectly fine (up his usual 8 times a night 🙄). I expect he thinks breastmilk is very boring now.
