Toddler gave my 12 week old jam!!

Was making jam tarts with the toddler and turned my back for all of 30 seconds to close the fridge - turned back to see the little bugger giving her 12 week old baby brother (sat in his bouncer) a bloody spoonful of strawberry jam!! 🫠

Do I need to do anything?!

Call 111 for advice on a spoonful of jam?

Knowing 111 they'll send an ambulance for this!

Honestly people are complete timewasters at times

soupfiend · 08/11/2024 17:36

Im wondering if there is similarity in the fat/sugar ratio in breast vs evaoporated milk?

Mumistiredzzzz · 08/11/2024 17:38

What in earth would you need to do?!

I was given baby rice and lega from 9 weeks old! I was a very very hungry baby . I'm still here to tell the tale.

Mipil · 08/11/2024 17:39

Weaning at 3 months was the norm 20 years ago. You probably were. It will be fine!

OrcBytes · 08/11/2024 17:42

I also assumed that OP was worried about allergies and don't think it was that stupid to suggest to keep an eye and call 111 if worried.

It was obviously meant to mean if worried that baby starts showing symptoms and not just a suggestion to randomly inform them he had some jam.

Yuja · 08/11/2024 17:46

When my DS was 9 weeks old my then 2 year old fed him strawberry yoghurt...he's still here to tell the tale 9 and a half years later. I shouldn't think a spoon of strawberry jam will have any long term effects...!

I think this is quite a common second child thing! DD1 not a morsel passed her lips till six months. DD2 I turned round for one second and DD1 was trying to feed her chocolate buttons at 3 months old Grin

Had exactly the same thing happen with mine at the same age 😂

Chocolate button sucking infant is now a healthy 18 year old, so no harm done...

Scutterbug · 08/11/2024 18:14

My daughter who was 15 months at the time, fed her newborn brother a chocolate button!

muddyford · 08/11/2024 18:17

What do you suggest?

Not really, but the earliest formula you could buy wasn't really modified like modern formula is.

I can remember my mother buying National Dried Milk to make bottles for my sister. You even had to add sugar to it!

soupfiend · 08/11/2024 18:31

So comparing to whole milk (cows milk), breast milk has more carbs, more fat but less protein.

Comparing to evaporated milk, breast milk is lower in all 3, by quite some way!

Second DC have a VERY different experience experience than PFBs!

That would be after dipping their dummy in condensed milk!

and rubbing whisky on sore gums

AdaColeman · 08/11/2024 18:55

The original formula for gripe water included a similar amount of alcohol as a light beer, plus sugar of course!

TwigletsAndRadishes · 08/11/2024 19:00

Of course you don't need to 'do anything.' It's sugar, not heroin or bleach.

TBF one of my friends' parents was allegedly fed on nestle evaporated milk from birth.

My MIL is adamant she started DH on puréed chicken and rice from three weeks. Weirdly insistent about it although FIL maintains he has zero memory of anything ‘unusual like that’

She extremely suspicious of my crunchy / EBF to 6 months / organic / BLW take on child feeding.

My oldest is 32. When he was a baby there was baby food available for babies from 12 weeks old, and because he was a big grizzly boy I was advised, by HV, to start weaning him then!

He's still alive 🙂

I am 33 - I was an exceptionally hungry infant (to the point I yanked the teat off the bottle with my overzealous guzzling) and the HV told mum to get me on combination formula and solids from 3 months. I survived. Still skinny with a big appetite.

TattedBarley · 08/11/2024 19:23

My daughter had her first spoonfuls of baby rice at 12 weeks, she absolutely loved it and was weaning not long after! I wouldn’t worry OP :)

Can posters stop quoting me now please?

It was obviously a stupid comment but I was just thinking about allergie.

It was a perfectly sensible comment, I don't know why people are being such dicks to you. Ok well done to them, I'm sure it's obvious to them that jam is harmless, and it sounds like the OP is now reassured. But it's not always a given that a mum worried enough to start a thread isn't still in a panic. What seems ridiculous and funny to someone not in that situation can feel overwhelming and terrifying if you're an anxious mum who has been worried by something.

It sounds like the OP isn't anxious and is now reassured, but if she hadn't been then having that sensible advice of "it's probably fine but if I'm really worried I can call 111" is in my opinion a very good solution. It lets you be reassured while knowing there is always another port of call if worried.

I once drove my friend to the hospital for what turned out to be a piece of chocolate caught under her newborn's fingers. I myself once rang my mum in tears because I thought baby DD had been too close to fireworks. Another friend rang 111 because her baby had been asleep too long!! Yes, in all these examples we were being ridiculous. But in the moment it was frightening, and you have to be a bit of a dick to not realise that it's hard being a mum sometimes.

cocog · 08/11/2024 19:31

My second had a pink wafer biscuit! 🤣

MammaKel · 08/11/2024 15:26

It's not ideal but probably fine.

I can't imagine a one off thing like this being an issue.

Keep an eye on baby and if worried call 111 for advice.

Keep an eye on him for what?

Danascully2 · 08/11/2024 20:51

I know someone who was advised to mix weetavix in her babies bottle from age 2 weeks many decades ago.... Baby was fine...

Danascully2 · 08/11/2024 20:54

Weetabix even...

Punok · 08/11/2024 15:26

No he didn't choked - he was delighted.

I'm sure he was, honestly it's not ideal but back in the day families used to wean from 12-16 weeks,I'm absolutely not advocating this but as a one off it will be fine .
