Toddler gave my 12 week old jam!!

Was making jam tarts with the toddler and turned my back for all of 30 seconds to close the fridge - turned back to see the little bugger giving her 12 week old baby brother (sat in his bouncer) a bloody spoonful of strawberry jam!! 🫠

Do I need to do anything?!

Totally fine. Years ago, babies were fed alcohol to quieten them down and they even fed dissolved rusk and bread to newborns to fill them up and keep them quiet (40s/50s)

You'd be amazed how resilient babies can be.

TBF one of my friends' parents was allegedly fed on nestle evaporated milk from birth.

Yes! I remember evaporated milk used to have a NOT TO BE FED TO BABIES" warning on the label so this must have been very common practice.

SeatonCarew · 08/11/2024 16:33

I was, pretty much! Apparently it was the only thing I could keep down. It explains a lot...

My oldest fed tiny bits of chocolate to the 4 month old in the back of the car while we were out (45 minute drive, lots of time to make mischief). I got home opened the car door to find the baby with chocolate all over his face and a big smile. I was not too pleased but hid it well and baby survived just fine.
I never thought to say don't give the baby chocolate he was just being nice and sharing.

Wigglywoowho · 08/11/2024 16:34

No. He will be fine. I bet he was delighted.

Kalimero · 08/11/2024 16:34

Baby will be fine. If he didn't have an immediate reaction it's highly unlikely he'll have any.

Just for accurate information, when calling about visible allergic reactions in children, ALWAYS call 999, NOT 111.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 08/11/2024 16:37

It will be fine.

Not as young - as DD2 was another Velcro baby - but she was given food before I panned to feed her solids - as my two older toddlers gave her what they were eating - she was highly pleased.

teatoast8 · 08/11/2024 16:39

It'll be fine 🙂

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 08/11/2024 16:40

MIL and DM also insisted we were weaned at 3 month - round 12 weeks in 70s and that was normal time and we grew up fine ( we waited till 6 months for older 2 kids and was near 5 for DD2 because of her siblings)

Evaporated milk ( diluted) was often used for bottle fed babies in the sixties. The past is indeed a different country!

My dm, a trained MW, gave dd a tiny bit of jam when she was under 2 weeks old.
I had gone out to the shop for less than an hour for the first time and left dm in charge.
I saw the jam on dd's chin. Dm and I had a massive row.
Dd's 33 now and absolutely fine.

LBFseBrom · 08/11/2024 16:45

He'll be fine.

It's not ideal but probably fine.

I can't imagine a one off thing like this being an issue.

Keep an eye on baby and if worried call 111 for advice.

111...for a spoonful of jam. I really have read it all 😂😂😂

This has made my day!

Thesilkinsideachesnutshell · 08/11/2024 16:49

@kalimero I think it depends on the severity of the allergic reaction and the symptoms displayed. It isn't always a 999 call. Or even 111.

CherryHinton · 08/11/2024 16:53

It'll be a funny story when he's older. But what a PP said - gently remind toddler that he's too little, keep a beady eye on them, and move the jam and other toddler delights out of reach. It's rather sweet she shared rather than eating it herself!

MammaKel · 08/11/2024 16:57

Can posters stop quoting me now please?

It was obviously a stupid comment but I was just thinking about allergie.

Allergies even 🙄

I ate my brother's Easter Egg at about that age, the fools left it that bit too close. I've survived over half a century since it happened Grin

Llhaaf · 08/11/2024 17:05

Oh I wish I could have seen his little face! What a treat 😂 and it sounds like the start of a beautiful sibling relationship.
Im sure it won’t hurt this once.

AdaColeman · 08/11/2024 17:10

Years ago, a Health Visitor told me I should be feeding three month old DS pilchards!

Yes. We sold it at Boots when I was a Saturday girl.
The brand was Regal, and there was a feeding table on the tin.

Quite a lot of parents bought it. That was in 1971.

TheShellBeach · 08/11/2024 17:14

And yes, babies were given solids much earlier years ago.

Three months was recommended.

Ponderingwindow · 08/11/2024 17:16

Second children are never fed as carefully as first children for precisely this reason. Your baby will be fine. Just remind the toddler that the baby only needs milk right now and other food needs to wait.

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 08/11/2024 17:23

I'm so sorry, I totally understand why you've had a little freak out, but I absolutely cackled at this. What an adorable yet awful thing for your toddler to have done 😂

strangeandfamiliar · 08/11/2024 17:30

I'm in my 50s and was fed diluted Carnation from birth on the recommendation of the hospital I was born in...
