How to not be utterly depressed and scared about Trump winning

Is there any way at all to reframe the likely outcome of the US election? I just feel terrible this morning. Scared and angry. It's wasted energy, though. I can't do anything positive with these feelings and I'm guessing I'm not the only person feeling like this. How are other people finding ways to move out of this feeling so they aren't wasting time and energy on something they have no influence over currently?

OP posts:

It never ceases to amaze me how left leaning people seem unable to understand that not everyone thinks like them. I'm right leaning, always have been but I totally understand why someone would lean toward the left - perhaps it's something to do with left having more to do with groups as opposed to the individual idk but from trump to brexit the disbelief and failure to read the room on these issues is nuts. Calm down OP - it's called democracy. It's not perfect but it's the best system out there at the moment.

Most Americans couldn't point to the Ukraine on a map and they don't want billions of their tax dollars given away to a foreign country that has nothing to do with them.

Yes. Much better to move that support to Russia eh.

The U.K. is fast becoming very irrelevant that should be more scary. Two tier Keir is taking us to the pits.

Behave. The Conservatives took us there years ago.

Of course that is your opinion which you are absolutely entitled to, but the financial markets don't seem to share that opinion ("lunatics in charge" being bad for the economy).

Guess whose opinion is more important- your's or the financial markets?

Well the saying goes "that if you vote right wing then you have no heart but if you vote left wing then you have no brain ".

When your views are emotively driven rather than through logic then it becomes very hard to understand the opposing view point.

I think footage from the last few weeks show he's in cognitive decline, possibly worse than Biden.

I give it 2 years at most before Vance takes over, which doesn't fill me with confidence either and I agree he's a bit of a scary prospect too. but I do think that Vance at least has a brain whereas Trump has always been thick as mince.

There, there. Maybe a lie down and double up on your meds. It seems TDS is a real thing

They literally voted for a rapist and fraudster. It doesn't smack of caring about decency and a better world tbh.

Yes, they did. Including some Democrats and Independents, voted for Trump.

The fact they did shows what the other party was offering. Not much.

Both parties had better start doing better, or another party will sneak in and stir things up. I think more voted for third parties this election than they have previously. We did and we know many more who did. I knew my candidate wouldn't win, but I also didn't feel I needed a shower after I voted. Voting for either of the other two would have made me feel dirty and in need of a shower.

Trumps said he's going to stop the Russia Ukraine war. Why should Americans have to keep funding it? Do you honestly believe trump intends to invade the UK? Remember he's the only US president in decades to have no new wars during his time. Were you worried about war when the other presidents were in charge? Are all the other politicians not liars? They may not be 'convicred felons ' but that doesn't mean they're innocent.
What's tommy Robinson got to do with it? They've put him in prison again haven't they?

No new wars in his time? Apart from him giving Afghanistan back to the Taliban - but I suppose that wasn't a war, seeing as he just handed it over.

Americans probably don't want to pay for a war in Ukraine/Russia but they'll be paying for it - as will the rest of the West - if Trump helps hand the victory over to Putin by withdrawing support from Ukraine. And obviously Putin won't stop at Ukraine, his long term goal has always been to annexe all the former USSR countries again.

The world didn’t stop when he was in power last time. In fact, America did pretty okay. So I can’t think why it would be any more scarey this time around. Just go about your normal day. Nothing to worry about here..

The markets are dominated by big US firms, of course they're going to be boosted by a president who will give them tax cuts and impose tariffs on foreign business.

They're also well aware of the inflationary nature of Trump's policies and as the wealthiest 10% of Americans own 89% of stocks, the benefits to most people will be nothing or marginal.

Not to mention the ramifications for the rest of us.

Can someone please extend their knowledge to me- so as I understand it trump is anti abortian etc and has said some degrading things about women. What are the other implications of him being president please?

BrainstormGreenNeedle · 06/11/2024 11:37

Putin will likely blackmail Trump.

He wants to withdraw support for Ukraine and increase support for Israel, both of which will substantially worsen the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine/Russia. Putin will be massively emboldened by a Trump victory. The environment is also fucked - last time in power he gave energy giants a more or less free reign - and he's won this election on the back of demonising immigrants and LGBT people, so he's given the green light to bigotry.

Plus this will probably end in a complete ban on abortion. And he's threatened to take action against his enemies (meaning Harris and most Democrats) and undermine the constitution, and there's a good chance this is the end of democracy in the US as it stands today.

Fingers crossed it's not as bad as it could be and the above turn out to be worst case scenarios.

Araminta1003 · 06/11/2024 11:42

How will Putin blackmail Trump? Nonsense, the American secret services must have loads of dirt on Putin too. These egomaniacs understand each other. It is all talk and show. All they care about ultimately is money anyway and looking powerful.

Oh wow. Thank you very much. What are his views on the lgbt community please?

HoppingPavlova · 06/11/2024 11:44

@AnonymousBleep It was pretty shit though, especially if you were a woman in Afghanistan, and Trump's decision to pull out all his troops meant the Taliban back and a return to the dark ages

But lots of places in the world are utterly shit irrespective of Trump. You could name women in many countries who live a shit existence every day, nothing to do with who is President in the USA. That’s horrible and sad, and we all wish it were not the case, but do you fixate and hand wring for them every day?

It's fair to say he's not a fan. I'm not going to involve myself in the GC/trans wars that rage on Mumsnet, but regardless on your views on that, he will also roll back rights and support for LGB people. My American LGBT friends are devasted and scared.

That's a straw man argument. I'm not going to post a long post about the global strategic significance of Afghanistan but the info is there if you want to look for it.

I said to my husband this morning "the only silver lining is at least he won't be able to run again in 4 years as this is his 2nd term"

No you don't understand. Trump is not the biggest concern. Its Vance. Trump s just some egotist who is President as he likes the glory and rallies and status and all that. Vance is an intelligent dangerous ideologue. What this has done is lead the way to Vance becoming President.

And if Democrats don't stop their ' I don't understand why people voted for Trump, - they must all be thick and racist' schtick and start listening to the more than half of voters and addressing their concerns, then that is exactly what will happen.

A previous poster said she cannot understand why people voted for Brexit or Trump. Its not that hard to understand.

If democrats don't want Vance next, a bit more intellectual curiosity, a bit less hubris and a bit more humility is going to be needed.

I can't quite believe that mocking a disabled reporter didn't end it, grab em by the pussy didn't end it, January 6th didn't end it, being a convicted felon didn't end it. I will never understand how one person could fill in the circle next to his name, never mind 70 million.

It's all of this - I had a cry this morning, just because what does it say about people/ the world that 70 million people can vote for such a terrible person. I don't give a fuck about if you think his economic policy was better blah blah - if you can have watched the shit that came out at the last rally and still vote for him, then you're more ok with racism, bigotry and fascism than you should be, and that's scary.

If 70 million people can read stories like that of Nevaeh Crain and continue to vote for the fanatics who would rather let a pregnant 18 year old die than afford her basic right to lifesaving treatment, what does that say about the world our daughters are growing up in?

I don't care if Harris wasn't the perfect candidate, I don't care what excuses Trump voters used to justify voting for a figure who incites nothing but hate, division and bigotry, and I don't care about think pieces on what the left can learn from this - don't vote for a fucking acknowledged rapist who threatens 'mass deportations from day 1' and dress it up as concern over the economy.

I accept it's an emotional response, and not a particularly considered one. I'm sure there's more nuance to it than all that, but I'm going to allow myself today to have my emotional reaction. And I'm going to avoid any news coverage, I just don't think I can bring myself to look at his face today.

But you are looking very narrowly at one man. And what the media has portrayed about one man.
Look wider. Look beyond the man to understand why his party are in.
Saying you don’t care and then spouting off sounds like a teenager stomping their feet and slamming their bedroom door tbh.

Trump is a nasty man. Apparantly Putin has some videos on Trump showing him up to be bad. Trump is just nasty. He's been showing his America a big lie about himself. Trump will do anything to hide his nasty. He's in Putins lap now.
