Do you take your birthday off work?

It's my birthday this Friday. Not feeling great as still recovering from major surgery last month but I have some holiday to take still and thought it would be nice to take it off (I haven't been able to for years due to using all annual leave on kids school holidays) Is it self indulgent to take the day off for your birthday? And if not, what would I do? (No spa day suggestions!!)

Very very rarely, but I don't object to it. A bit of self-indulgence is good 👍🏾.

My last workplace gave you your birthday off as an extra days holiday!

Nextcallplease654 · 04/11/2024 11:26

Nope. It wouldn’t occur to me to do this.

I usually celebrate at the nearest weekend.

TabbyM · 04/11/2024 11:29

Yes! Ever since my then evil boss denied my a day off for my 40th for no good reason I always do (born in a school holiday so never went to school that day). This year went out for lunch and visited an exhibition, cake was eaten ;)

My work give us a free extra day off on our birthday (or closest day if it falls on a weekend that year) so yes!

Twilightstarbright · 04/11/2024 11:51

I would love to but all my annual leave goes on school holidays :(

Dontcallmescarface · 04/11/2024 12:11

Mine's December 25th so I've never been to school/work on my birthday.

LadyDanburysCane · 04/11/2024 12:41

I work in school so, unless it falls on a weekend, I have no choice but to work on my birthday. It’s fine, my boss makes a fuss of me and when I had a “big” one a few years back ALL my colleagues came together to spoil me.

Ok. I've done it. Put in an A/L request for Friday. DH can't take it off but that's ok. I'm going to have a leisurely morning, then head into town to go shopping and for lunch. As luck would have it, my in-laws have just asked what I want so I've asked for John Lewis vouchers (they are very generous so normally get £100) and I'm going to treat myself to a new outfit. Then DH is taking me out for dinner and cocktails that evening. I feel so much happier now I have a plan!

Enjoy you bday and have nice time 🥳🙂
