Do you take your birthday off work?

It's my birthday this Friday. Not feeling great as still recovering from major surgery last month but I have some holiday to take still and thought it would be nice to take it off (I haven't been able to for years due to using all annual leave on kids school holidays) Is it self indulgent to take the day off for your birthday? And if not, what would I do? (No spa day suggestions!!)

i take my birthday off - all of my annual leave is booked around school holidays and it's one of the few 'me' days i can have to myself.

i normally have a day of shopping, but for my last birthday a few months ago, i just had a nice leisurely day, binge watching a few episodes on netflix, a nice leisurely lunch and then a takeaway with the family in the evening.

Other ideas - starting a book ive wanted to read, visiting an exhibition etc.

Would love to but have to keep annual leave to cover school hols 😭

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/11/2024 21:14

I always do! 🥰

doodleschnoodle · 03/11/2024 21:15

My company gives you your birthday off, which is really nice! Otherwise yes I probably would, but I work evenings so it would mean we could go out for a proper birthday tea etc. Go for it!

PinkBuffalo · 03/11/2024 21:16

I do take it off but only cos it coincides within a few days of the anniversary of my dad dying. I am still completely traumatised by it so I use most of my leave that month which just so happens to include my bday

it stops me going off sick from work with grief

TooBusyGazingAtStarss · 03/11/2024 21:30

Ever since I started working I have always booked the day off if it falls in the week.

My present to myself :)

LER83 · 03/11/2024 21:32

Ooh it's my birthday on Friday too! My dh usually takes the day off and we go out for lunch or to the cinema etc. If you can take the day off then do! Everyone I know takes the day off if they are able.

Stretchedresources · 03/11/2024 21:34

Always. I go to a daytime gym class and generally have a relaxed day pottering around.

BrieHugger · 03/11/2024 21:35

Yes, work give us it off as an extra days leave, has to be taken within a week of your birthday or you lose it. By coincidence my husbands work do the same so we always book each others off and do something nice.

Singleandproud · 03/11/2024 21:36

I did this year as I used to work in a school so couldn't.

I took DD to school and had a lovely relaxed morning, went out to lunch with my mum and mooched around the city before heading home. DD then took me to the cinema after school.

Mine too. Birthday twin. Yes we are going Christmas shopping, for lunch at the Ivy and to the toy museum, in Brighton

Sounds lovely. Enjoy your special day.

savethatkitty · 03/11/2024 21:37

I don't. But, I like my work mates. I take a yummy cake in and celebrate.

ShillyShallySherbet · 03/11/2024 21:37

Absolutely! I hate working on my birthday. Happy birthday for Friday! I would probably go for a spa day so not going to be helpful in suggesting anything to do, sorry! What’s your favourite thing to do? Do that!

I’m so sorry, @PinkBuffalo.

DreamyMe · 03/11/2024 21:39

Yes, I would never want to work on my birthday.

h7htj392 · 03/11/2024 21:39

Hi birthday twin! 😀

I sometimes do, sometimes don't. This year I am, because it's a Friday and I've got leave to use before Christmas so why not.

RubyGemStone · 03/11/2024 21:41

Yes. Have never worked on my birthday and as a summer baby, also never been to school on my birthday either.

I like to do things I enjoy on the day, sometimes with family or friends and sometimes alone depending on circumstances. Meal in my favourite restaurant or cafe, lovely long walk around town etc.

Where possible, I've let the DC off for their birthdays too, It's your one special you day a year, might as well enjoy it.

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 03/11/2024 21:51

I usually frame my summer holiday, or at the very least a long weekend, around my birthday, then celebrate with friends once I’m back.

OrNo · 03/11/2024 21:52

Always do. Only worked my birthday once and my boss chose it as the day to lay into me about something and I had to work late to correct it. Don't need that shit on my birthday! Take it off! Take it off! Take it off!

Onlyplans · 03/11/2024 21:54

Yes, now I’m flush with annual leave as not covering school holidays

PuppyMonkey · 03/11/2024 21:55

Yes it’s self indulgent.. and yes I’ve always booked my birthday off wherever I’ve worked. Grin

Pathetic and proud here.

Ellie1015 · 03/11/2024 21:55

Not necessarily on my birthday but i do take days off occasionally for myself when kids at school and dh at work. Sometimes i am productive, sometimes just relax/lounge around. In your situation I definitely would!

leia24 · 03/11/2024 21:56

I always take my birthday off and so does almost everyone else I know.
I usually meet Mt sister for breakfast and then get a facial or nails and them pick my daughter up from school and we do something with family in the evening. Even if it's just my dad visiting for a takeaway

Figgygal · 03/11/2024 21:57

Nah its just another day
And mine is in Jan so wouldn't waste a day that early in the holiday year anyway

LouH5 · 03/11/2024 22:09

I don’t think I’ve ever worked on my birthday. I’m a teacher and it often falls in the Easter hols, but if not, we get one well-being day a year where we can choose a day off, and I’d always pick my birthday as my well-being day, if it didn’t fall in the Easter hols or at a weekend. I would detest being in work on my birthday!
