Do you take your birthday off work?

It's my birthday this Friday. Not feeling great as still recovering from major surgery last month but I have some holiday to take still and thought it would be nice to take it off (I haven't been able to for years due to using all annual leave on kids school holidays) Is it self indulgent to take the day off for your birthday? And if not, what would I do? (No spa day suggestions!!)

No never, I can’t now I’m a teacher, but even when I did other jobs no, it wouldn’t occur to me.
Just like I wouldn’t let my kids stay home on their birthday.

It's nothing like letting your kids stay home on their birthday! People should use their annual leave for whatever they want!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/11/2024 20:41

I have my birthday off, most years. I'm a teacher and most years it falls in Feb half term, but not next year as it's a week later than sometimes it is.

AyrshireTryer · 03/11/2024 20:41

Mine was generally in half-term at school.
One year it wasn't and my mother made me go to school!
Always book it off.

kids don't get 25 days annual leave of their choosing from school. adults do.

different situations.

Always. My DH always has too. It’s a great pick me up and opportunity to stop and appreciate things on a ‘special’ day.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/11/2024 20:46

Of course not, I'm not a child.

Cynic17 · 03/11/2024 20:46

No. Of course not - I don't know anyone who does that.

OliviaRodrighost · 03/11/2024 20:46

I didn’t used to but now I take my birthday off. I just dread something really stressful happening at work and that ruining my whole birthday. I just want my birthday to be as stress-free and selfish as possible. I do suffer from anxiety.

Hesma · 03/11/2024 20:50

I can’t because I work in a school…

Book it!

LostOnTheWayToManderley · 03/11/2024 20:56

I always take my birthday off and I am a great believer in self indulgence. Sometimes I have big plans; sometimes I do fuck all. But I do not work.

2chocolateoranges · 03/11/2024 20:58

I always try and take my birthday off, I like going out for lunch with my mum and having a leisurely day .

who wants to work on their birthday?

CalicoPusscat · 03/11/2024 21:00

Is it mild pain you're in?

If you're up to it I love seeing scenic parks, something historic, browsing charity shops and a nice meal

It is m, it’s a bit pathetic really but each to their own

BashfulClam · 03/11/2024 21:05

Mine falls on one of the major bank holidays so I get a long weekend most years :)

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 03/11/2024 21:05

Neber workes on my birthday except once and l decided it was overrated so never again!

rainbowbee · 03/11/2024 21:05

Yes, always. I make a nice day for myself. Who wants office rubbish on their birthday!

Imagine being so miserable in your life that you consider someone taking a day's leave for their birthday to be 'pathetic'. Best of luck to those who have to be around you.

WonderingWanda · 03/11/2024 21:06

I can't because I'm a teacher but I would if I could. I would have a lovely day. Maybe go out for a nice brunch followed by a lovely walk in the woods. Then I would curl up by the fire with a book. Then a nice hot bath (winter birthday), put on my new birthday pj's that someone would've thoughtful given me and have takeaway curry and birthday cake for dinner followed by a film of my choice.

StampOnTheGround · 03/11/2024 21:07

My birthday was always in the school holidays, so my brain can't ever get around being at school or work on my birthday - I've booked it off every single year since!

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 03/11/2024 21:08

Brunch somewhere nice with either company or a good book then a wander around the shops to treat yourself to a gift.

Rorograce · 03/11/2024 21:08

I always do. Why not!! I also try and go away for a couple of days / coincide it with a little holiday. Self indulgent who cares Wink

ThatsNotMyTeen · 03/11/2024 21:09

We get an extra day off for our birthday

MrsPostmanPat · 03/11/2024 21:10

I usually book the whole week. Will be doing just that for my next birthday.

TeenLifeMum · 03/11/2024 21:11

Yes, I usually do these days now dc are older and annual leave isn’t vital to cover school holidays.
