Any one else with a favourite song from the nineties that no one else remembers?

Mine is Operaa House by Malcolm McLaren. I spent many a happy hour being driven through New Zealand as a kid torturing my parents by singing along to this and Aria on Air but no one I’ve meet seems to know of it. Still absolutely adore it as an adult but sadly no better at singing it.

Do you know what I loved about the 90s that we just don’t seem to have anymore - strong female-led bands. Not pop acts, but proper bands. Like Skunk Anansie, Garbage, Elastica, The Cranberries, PJ Harvey, Sleeper, Catatonia, Echobelly, etc.

Does anybody remember the Shine albums? Like the ‘Now…’ series for indie kids.

I've just been looking up the relevant Now albums for my teenage years on Spotify and adding loads of songs to my playlist. Looking forward to a very long dog walk with them soon!

I used to religiously buy and listen to the Now Albums in the 90s. All got so many good songs and eclectic with different styles of music.

Stars by Dubstar. Jo Whiley played it recently and I hadn't heard it for nearly 30 years!! Remembered every word

Also Into Your Arms by the Lemonheads

One Way by the Levellers

What you all need to do is ask Alexa to play songs from any random year and enjoy!!! I've rediscovered a fair few songs this way...

Stars! What a song!

This was big (got to #2), but you never ever hear it

Gives me such nostalgia, love it

Funny How - Airhead

Toottooot · 01/11/2024 21:17

On the Bible by Deuce.

ImDuranDuran · 01/11/2024 21:17

Does anyone remember this? I only rediscovered it by using Shazam during a very old episode of Classic Corrie. Genuinely hadn't heard it since it was released...

(I've never posted a YouTube link before so in case the video doesn't load, it's Jimmy Somerville - Heartbeat).

Don't forget Lush, and their massive hit Single Girl

They were a big part of the Britpop movement. I think it started to change though with the manufactured pop band, probably first with the Spice Girls and then Steps and Girls Aloud. Then with X Factor the solo singer took over.

Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might be Giants. Saw them in 1990 when it came out and am seeing them again the week after next in Manchester. Everyone I have told about the gig has never heard of them! Shocked.

I had a giant Flood poster on my wall as a student. Still have this and Istanbul on my playlist.

Shine (compilation series) - Wikipedia

They were all really good, pretty much Britpop albums.

Though of all the songs mentioned here the one that is stuck in my head is Mcalmont and Butler - Yes

Pixiedust49 · 01/11/2024 21:23

Mansun Wide Open Space, Eels Novacaine for the Soul

Alice Band - I Quit.

Proper London vibes.

I Quit was by Hepburn

Can't remember what Alice Band did.

DearSnail · 01/11/2024 21:25

Change your mind by Upside Down, who randomly later changed their name to Orange Orange!

It's a great 90s pop song and the video is sheer cheese.

CaveMum · 01/11/2024 21:26

Having mentioned The Cranberries, when I’m bored I like to watch music reaction videos on YouTube and watching people have a visceral reaction to Zombie gives me goosebumps every time.

RIP Dolores.

christmasfish · 01/11/2024 21:27

People are quite right, I Quit was indeed Hepburn (and a banger).

Alice Band did Nothing On But the Radio - similar message, also a banger!

DrizzleMySwizzle · 01/11/2024 21:27

Zombie is the Cranberries song I always have to skip. The childlike lyrics give me the cringe.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/11/2024 21:29

So many of these, but also:

Gloworm, Carry Me Home
Living Colour, Love Rears it's Ugly Head
Robert Miles, One and One

And obviously everyone knows Blur, but you rarely hear Twentieth Century Girl
