Any one else with a favourite song from the nineties that no one else remembers?

Mine is Operaa House by Malcolm McLaren. I spent many a happy hour being driven through New Zealand as a kid torturing my parents by singing along to this and Aria on Air but no one I’ve meet seems to know of it. Still absolutely adore it as an adult but sadly no better at singing it.

Gorgeous rendition of one of the best songs of the decade.

Everyone knows it, but few know it like this. Starts after 2:50

Virtually anything by gorkys zygotic mynci. Especially love 'Spanish dance troupe' and the beautiful 'face like summer'

We nearly had Spanish Dance Troupe as the first dance at our wedding! Mainly for the lyrics at the end.

I could be here forever with 90s pianohouse/house/rave/techno

Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might be Giants. Saw them in 1990 when it came out and am seeing them again the week after next in Manchester. Everyone I have told about the gig has never heard of them! Shocked.

Love that song, so catchy.

starrypineapple · 01/11/2024 23:36

this! Hippy Chick

and

Kylie throwing out her SA&W legacy. Goodness, I got some stick for playing this on repeat via my ghetto blaster in the nurses home 😂

"This is how we party" by Soap. Gives me a lot of nostalgia of a family holiday to Anglesey, I think 1998 or 1999.

I came here to say exactly this!!!! I bloody LOVED that song. Made up a wee dance to it and everything. Nobody ever remembers it so it’s nice to meet a kindred spirit

JennySayQuoi · 01/11/2024 23:40

@OliviaRodrighost Came to post this and you beat me to it! Absolutely love this song, have it on 7" vinyl... seriously underrated tune... we had that beaded curtain too :)

The beauty of youtube is theres literally days worth of rave and house tunes from those days. Anyone in that genre will no doubt know the clubs of their area for those 1990-1997ish days but feel free to look up The Venue Spennymoor, Coliseum Rave Stockton or New Monkey Sunderland for all those old mixtapes and live recordings.

Alice Band - I Quit.

Proper London vibes.

Wasn’t I Quit by Hepburn?

For me it’s: Breathe a Little Deeper by Blameless - criminal that this isn’t better known, Farewell to Twilight by Symposium.

LOVED Atlantic252. I’m 16, on my tractor on my Dads farm in 1996 on a Sunday night listening to Graham Torrington’s late night love.

Omg, that's a core memory unlocked right there! Late Night Love with Graham Torrington!

I loved Kylie’s brief Indie Chick phase. Did It Again and Some Kind of Bliss are hugely underrated songs.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 01/11/2024 23:47

Breathe - Kylie Minogue
Fascinating Rhythm - Bassomatic

Yes by McAlmont and Butler. It’s a great break up song.

I LOVE this song, often have it on in the car where no one can hear my high pitched singing

Birdhouse in your soul is one of my favourites. Also love Yes by Mcalmont and Butler. Another one is 7 Seconds by Neneh Cherry and Youssou N'Dour.

All massive hits, that everyone remembers.

@RichardOsmansFreakishlyBigHand
how freaky you list those venues....
i am from that area but was away at the other end of the country during those days so only dabbled on rare weekends 'home'. i was sadly dragged to the Top Hat in Spenny by mates who stayed local rather than the places I wanted to go to but the blue monkey in sunderland is legendary and i managed to get there a few times with messy effect but great memories!

Crucified - Army of Lovers.
Satellite - The Beloved
Waterfall - Atlantic Ocean
Falling (PM Dawn remix) - Cathy Dennis
Feel - House of Love

Oh I remember Crucified! They always played that on MTV around teatime. And Sin With Sebastian - Shut Up (And Sleep With Me).

Just seen them tonight, on the first night of the tour, you are in for a treat!

Moveoverdarlin · 01/11/2024 23:56

Nice Guy Eddie - Sleeper.

RedeemingCreature · 01/11/2024 23:56

I was a raver and also into reggae, hip hop & R&B in the 90s, so most of the music I liked was never mainstream,
Thinking of stuff I liked that charted - not so much that nobody knows these tunes, but more that I rarely hear them anywhere…

Devotion - Nomad
Fascinating Rhythm - Bassomatic
Ghetto Heaven - Family Stand
7 Ways 2 Love - Cola Boy
Dont be a Stranger - Dinah Carroll

ChanelBoucle · 02/11/2024 00:00

Autumn Leaves by Coldcut
Velveteen (the song, not the whole album) by Transvision Vamp - so underrated and an absolute epic
Te Amo - Sultana
The Orange Theme - Cygnus X
The Impossible Dream - Carter USM
Winter - Tori Amos
Never be Mine - Kate Bush (might be late 80s actually)

Ah man I was a smidge younger than you so the whole genre had practically disappeared by the time I was old enough to get in. The venue burned down when I was at school. But yeah the top hat was legendary. This music is in our blood in the north east.
