I’m scared now I’ve realised this

I was thinking that the US public wouldn’t vote for Trump now that it is so apparent he is such a fascist. It’s terrifying to realise that they already know that and that is why they are going to vote for him.
I’m scared for the world.

"no one can claim that a vote for Harris/Walz and the Democrats is protective of women’s rights, that’s a tragically laughable claim."

Other than banning transgender women from participating in women's sports, what other legal sanctions against transgender women would you like to see that would actually 'keep women safe'?

"Thousands of children in the USA have undergone medical transition and have been sterilised and rendered asexual. "

You do understand 'asexual' means 'someone who does not experience sexual attraction towards others'. Is that what you meant to say? What makes you think people who've transitioned don't experience sexual desire?

Edited

If a child at about tanner stage 2 goes on puberty blockers followed by cross sex hormones they won't go through the developmental stage that allows them to later have children, or to fully mature sexually. Puberty blockers are "reversible" in that if a teenager stops taking them, puberty will resume, but puberty is a window - you can't stop it until the age of 25 and then expect it to resume. That isn't in doubt or really debated by medical professionals (even the pioneers in the Netherlands talk about this) Where the debate is, is whether its worth that "cost" for the mental health etc of the child/future adult and the possible advantages early transition brings.

I don't think Vance actually cares about this. And I don't think that he wants to build cross party support or consensus on the issue or find a permanent solution. It's a convenient wedge and unfortunately the more useful that wedge is the less motivation there is to "solve" this divisive issue either way.

nolongersurprised · 02/11/2024 00:42

Puberty blockers are "reversible" in that if a teenager stops taking them, puberty will resume

When used for gender “medicine” no knows if this is true. Puberty is being stopped at a time it’s supposed to happen, rather than way too early, as in previous puberty.

Families are told this is true, but it probably isn’t. Look at the study from the Mayo clinic on testicular changes from boys on blockers. Some had marked atrophy and fibrotic changes - unlikely to be salvageable.

biscuitandcake · 02/11/2024 00:44

@nolongersurprised Thanks. I originally typed "puberty could be expected to resume" but I deleted it and some other stuff because what I had written was ridiculously wordy. But you are right!

"Criticism goes back to Obama when a super majority was held"

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/debunking-the-myth-obamas_b_1929869

There's been so much repetition of unacknowledged GOP framing on this thread.

Roe was considered settled law for decades so there was no urgency to legislate.

Appreciate your post. Especially pointing out that criticism was levied by the GOP. I wasn't aware of the origin of the criticism. My memory of that time was that the ACA dominated and debate dragged on until a very watered-down version passed. Again, the Dems gambled and lost. RBG pointed out the precariousness of Roe. What's true, is how difficult it is to get laws passed ("I'm just a bill," anyone?).

I hope Liz Cheney has extra security. It's terrifying.

Just the fact this fuckwit is an option for POTUS - and he's out on bail.

And making threats against his "enemies" to rile up his supporters - and we all know what they did on Jan 6 when he sent them after Mike Pence...

I cannot wait for the election results to be in, for Kamala to win, and for Trump to receive a custodial sentence later this month.

So - she’s supporting Trump? The oppressed women are voting for a change?

Or they’re oppressed under Biden and Harris will be better? Has she forgotten who’s currently in charge?

Or the lives of women in oppressive states will be suddenly transformed by a vote for Harris? That’s a big stretch on her part.

The article describes her post as “cryptic”. I think that’s journalism speak for “doesn’t make sense”🤣

nolongersurprised · 02/11/2024 07:19

Maybe they’re delighted to no longer be referred to as their body parts. Uterus-havers, vulva owners, bodies with vaginas, people with eggs…

Where on earth did you get that?

In The Handmaid's Tale, women's reproductive rights (and indeed all rights) are severely policed by a dominant patriarchal totalitarian society.

So, removing their handmaid's garb and voting and emerging as free women, able to dress as they please, and live and work as they wish, would obviously indicate she is supporting Harris, not Trump, who talks more and more of women as subservient to their men.

I mean, it's not that hard to read that cartoon... When you remove women's right to abortion, and deprive them of medical assistance when miscarrying, you are entering a sort of dystopian, retrograde nightmare society for women.

I’ve read the book.

The oppressed women are voting and THEN removing their handmaid’s garb - ie they’re being emancipated by voting. Things are getting better for them.

I suspect Atwood forgot who is currently in power 😀😀

lightandstars · 02/11/2024 08:04

MAGA women are defying their husbands and secretly voting for Kamala. There is a massive upswing in women voting early, and voting for Kamala. If you can't interpret a simply cartoon, I am not sure how you managed the book.

But the cartoon suggests they’re currently in a dystopian retrograde nightmare society and a vote would liberate women from that. And Biden is in charge currently.

The women are in Handmaid’s garb inferring they are being actively oppressed RIGHT NOW. They vote, and shed it, becoming emancipated.

you can spin it all you like, but Atwood has lost the plot

lightandstars · 02/11/2024 08:08

Trump has said he'll protect women "whether they like it or not."

Can't get much more dystopian for women than that. (Well, it can, and it probably will if he gets back in. Which, luckily for the world, he won't.)

This interpretation would make sense, if MAGA women are being liberated as a result of their voting choice. The fact they’re doing it secretly and returning to their oppressed lives at the behest of their Captain and can’t openly and boldly state they voted for Harris, suggests otherwise.

Which part of being denied reproductive rights isn't clear oppression to you?

Some little twelve year old who has been raped being forced to carry a pregnancy to full term...

The women who have died, while miscarrying, denied medical care...

I feel this thread is where brain cells come to die.

Stay on track! No need for ad hominem attacks.

you posted a cartoon showing women in Handmaid’s garb throwing it off after voting. They are realised from their oppression after voting.

At present, the party who claims they will uphold reproductive rights are in power.

So - given Democrats are in power now, why are the women oppressed before they vote and how are they emancipated from the oppression after voting?

No one here is denying that a lack of abortion rights is oppression.

The cartoon doesn’t make sense. Attwood’s sharing of it is confusing. As has been stated, the cartoon suggests the Biden is currently oppressing women and a vote for Harris will liberate women. If the suggestion is that women in red states are liberating themselves by voting for Harris, I think that’s fantasy land stuff. They’ll vote for her, she may get elected president, then go back their lives of their family- and state- based oppression. They won’t be throwing off their handmaid’s outfits, that’s for sure.

Trump elected may make abortion harder to access. It’s speculative. Harris may make it easier to access. That is also speculative, given the failures of successive Democrat presidents.

And there are other women’s rights issues that may worsen under Harris and a Democrat administration. This is the bind.

lightandstars · 02/11/2024 08:30

One of the main reason Republican women are crossing over and voting for Harris is one of her platforms is reproductive rights.

Women want the right to abortion for women and girls.

Seriously, how hard is any of this to grasp.

nolongersurprised · 02/11/2024 08:32

I genuinely don’t understand why people don’t feel duped by Harris campaigning on abortion rights.

They’ve just had 4 years in power, 2 1/2 years since Roe vs Wade was overturned and crickets 🦗.
