Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

There were far fewer dogs then. I am old and I just don’t remember loads of dog poo about. What I do remember is lying down and rolling down hills. You couldn’t do that now. You would get covered in dog poo. In my youth people didn’t have such large or aggressive dogs.

I am old and I remember the days when wee solo dogs (usually of indeterminate breed) went determinedly about their day taking zero notice of humans and being zero inconvenience to them either. There were some but not anywhere near the numbers of dogs you see about now.

And they all seemed fixated on their doggy life, ignoring people, rather than these awful idiotic frantic creatures now determined to “be friendly” and “say hello” all the time.

What changed?

Because it's a drop in the ocean compared to the filth people create and it really makes no difference.

You could say 'why add to that with more people?'

It makes a difference to people who don’t want to interact with other people’s dogs.

There are definitely more and more dogs appearing in pubs, shops etc. Two dogs in a pub the other day / one lunged at the other who shat on the floor ! Really? I don't like dogs sniffing at me and I am reticent when walking past some dogs with my hands hanging at my sides.

Saw an old man going into a shop one day and the dog tied up blocking the door bit him savagely on the hand as he went past. Blood pouring out of it as the old gent wrapped it in one of those men’s cloth handkerchiefs many elderly people prefer to use. 😞

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 We would get on 😁

😂 me too...

I'm sure the anti dog also make up a % of the 'Little Julian can't possibly get to a open day without mama and papa' brigade. Parents and dogs at open days, neither required, parents could stay home with Fido.

Forwhatitsworth18 · 28/10/2024 12:28

I seriously admire the dedication dog owners require. As far as I can tell a dog literally controls an owners life. This plus the general expense & the fact they must pick up dog poo often twice a day & worse if they have the runs. Holidays abroad are only achievable if there is a dog sitter & even then people are reluctant to leave them. To my mind they are far harder work than children. There again I've never owned a dog apart from in childhood when my parents had to give away a dog after trying for a year. It would eat every shoe in the house.I did love it though so I understand the feeling. My assumptions as an adult are purely based on what I perceive to be true hence I have no desire to own a dog now or in the future.

@AgileGreenSeal You’ve described Hairy Maclary!

tillytomtiny · 28/10/2024 12:33

Dog owner here and I'd happily take her everywhere with me if she was the perfect pooch but let's be honest... she can be harder work than my kids when we're out!

Not sure I see the need to take a dog to an open day - but then again, the family might have been travelling far from home for the day and couldn't leave the pooch for so many hours. I mean, I have friends who have faced similar situations and end up taking their dog along.

We're lucky as our little one is absolutely fine left all day on the rare occasion - gives her a break from the chaos 😅

I love dogs by the way and have had dogs most of my life. But I do think the current dog culture is really bad for society and more importantly the poor animals. Its so pitiful seeing them dressed up in clothes, taken into artificial surroundings and made to live with painful conditions much longer than they should because the owners cannot bear to part with their fur babies. All whilst the veterinary industry prolongs the life of the animal to gouge more money out of the owners.

It's gotten out of control since covid and I do wonder whether it will diminish as less people can afford dogs. Pendulum may swing back the other way as costs continue to increase.

This!

DBD1975 · 28/10/2024 12:45

I love dogs, cannot stand people especially those who procreate and then expect you to fawn over their offspring.

I would love my favourite dog friendly cafes and shops (John Lewis especially) to ban all other humans as they spread germs and infectious diseases everywhere they go but alas despite my best efforts hideous, vile, obnoxious people are everywhere.

These days dogs are part of the family so why can't they go everywhere. As with poorly behaved children, blame the parent/owner for bad behaviour. If I had my way all children would be kept on a lead.

I don't like people so I avoid places where people go, if you don't like dogs, avoid where dogs go, it really is that simple.

.If you really hate dogs that much, don't go to places where dogs are allowed.

So someone should jeopardise their education prospect because someone else can’t bear to be parted from a pet?

Nope, they could call ahead and ask if they allow dogs onsite. If they do, then clearly it isn't the right university for them.

If the dog is allowed to be there then the pet owner isn't doing anything wrong.

It still makes a difference to my day if my grandchild walks in dog muck when we go down to the beach though. I would prefer that it didn’t happen. Is it wrong of me to feel that way?

Except dog owners who think they should be able to take their fur babies absolutely everywhere? 🫣

CatamaranViper · 28/10/2024 13:53

wiesowarum · 28/10/2024 07:25

Why do they need to be there exactly?

People travelled a long way to view the uni and weren't able to leave their dog at home. They may have checked before hand and were told that it was fine to bring their dog.

Unless they take their dog into a place that doesn't allow them, theyve done nothing wrong

A dog does not need to be at a Uni open day unless it's an actual service dog.

Carseatcarq · 28/10/2024 13:53

Children (and I am loathe to use the comparison, but let's go there...) while frequently annoying and filthy and unruly aren't half as likely to draw blood and send you to a and e.
Can't remember the last time a toddler escaped their garden and went on to maul a passerby...

when was the last time you trod in child shit on the pavement or had to go to A&E for a toddler bite?

Many dog owners are appalled by those who leave poo behind. There are always bad people and bad dog owners.

For years now, when I walk on the beach with my dog I pick up litter that has been left behind by people. This includes poo left by irresponsible dog owners but has also included fishing line, cans, plastic bottles, broken glass, disposable barbeques and dirty nappies.

Sometimes I think it's people who should be banned from the beach.

I know you swim in the sea, as do I. There are millions of gallons of human sewage poured into the sea and onto our beaches every year. Much more human waste than dog waste on beaches.

I live in a tourist town and in the season there are often full nappies left on the beach, street and car parks.

So you think it’s reasonable for universities to prioritise dogs above people?

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 28/10/2024 14:12

I really love dogs and all animals. But I think a lot of dog owners are bloody useless. They see a dog as a substitute child. They don't always see the needs of the dog - just their own.

Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Just knowing some dog owners are decent people is no consolation when I’m scraping it off my grandkids’ shoes.

I also pick up on the beach, including dog poop- I’ve been asked why by puzzled dog owners since I’m clearly not with a dog.

My response is “no, I don’t have a dog, I have grandchildren”.

CanalBoots · 28/10/2024 14:21

@AgileGreenSeal Us sea swimmers are good litter collecting people whether we have dogs or not 😀

I live in the countryside and last time I took my dog for a walk a child was doing a poo in the field. Grim.

ShamblesRock · 28/10/2024 14:27

What is it with the child-hating posters lately? I don't think that only parents should be on MN (or trying to be, pregnant etc) but to come on to a parenting board and pretty much claim children are horrible is just weird

There are plenty of other forums available that don't have a focus on children and parenting.
