Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

Oooh yay, a dog bashing thread.

Has it occurred to you OP that the drive up to the university was a few hours long and they didn't have someone to walk the dog or take it out whilst they were out of the house all day?

But why is that OP’s problem? It’s their responsibility to sort their dog out or not come. Why do they think they should inflict it on the rest of us?

Some people have a phobia, some people are allergic, some people don’t like horrible, stinky, slobbery, yappy, jumping up, attention seeking, personal space grabbing creatures. Their needs should trump those of the said creatures imo.

Tapthisscreen · 28/10/2024 08:48

People without dogs seem so … uptight. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

SparrowFeet · 28/10/2024 08:51

It's not the OPs problem at all. She could have just ignored them and gone about her business. Unless they were off lead and running around campus I'm pretty sure it was quite easy to do.

30% - 40% of households have a dog. The OP saw two. It's hardly an epidemic of people bringing their dogs everywhere they go.

Silly comment. Everyone has something that annoys/upsets/scares them. But yeah, people who are pissed off at the number of dogs everywhere are uptight because YOU have a dog? Right.

CanalBoots · 28/10/2024 09:12

I can happily leave my dog at home for a couple of hours.

I tell some people I can't leave her so that I can avoid their appalling social events.

It's not that they're annoyed/upset/scared - it's the crazed way they rant about dogs bums and dirt and 'brushing up against clothes'.

All that worrying about dogs bums on shop floors when every handrail, button and cashpoint in Britain is smeared with the germs from a million fingers that have been up noses, down trouser fronts and worse.

But why add to that with animals?

But then surely the same argument applies both ways. Why is it the dog owner's problem if other people don't like dogs?
The dogs were clearly permitted otherwise they would have been asked to leave. If you really hate dogs that much, don't go to places where dogs are allowed.

IKEAJesus · 28/10/2024 10:02

.If you really hate dogs that much, don't go to places where dogs are allowed.

So someone should jeopardise their education prospect because someone else can’t bear to be parted from a pet?

ShamblesRock · 28/10/2024 10:04

Businesses allow dogs in because it's financially a good idea. A third of British homes have dogs so if you ban dogs you're potentially keeping a third of your potential footfall away.

I'm not sure it works like that, 2/3 don't have dogs so potentially you are keeping them away. Also a lot of the 1/3 don't agree with it.

It is catering for a very small minority, I'm sure it puts off more people when dogs are allowed then when they're not.

CanalBoots · 28/10/2024 10:06

Screamingabdabz · 28/10/2024 09:47

Because it's a drop in the ocean compared to the filth people create and it really makes no difference.

You could say 'why add to that with more people?'

Judging by how busy dog friendly places are it's not keeping anyone away.

I am so here for this! They are allowed in my local John Lewis, brushing past the clothes etc? I mean WTAF?

Same here.. one woman tried to take her dog into JL cafe but wasn't allowed thankfully
Saturday evening in a packed pub in town.. at least 2 dogs taking up seats!

SnowFrogJelly · 28/10/2024 10:14

I don't hate dogs.. used to own one, just think they should be left at home sometimes

stayathomer · 28/10/2024 10:43

ClairDeLaLune

Then they shouldn’t have a dog in the first place.
Because their dogs bark or they have neighbours that would report them? Some dogs just bark a lot!!

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/10/2024 10:44

So, 2 families out of how many, had dogs with them. And the conclusion you have drawn from that is that dogs are "everywhere"?

If it was a uni open day that you were at, then chances are that those families travelled a great distance and could not make arrangements for someone to look after their dog.

Why were you there anyway? It is your DS going to uni, not you.

YeOldeGreyhound · 28/10/2024 10:52

GoldCat255 · 27/10/2024 23:58

People can't afford children so they have dogs instead.
It's pathetic.

Um, lots of dog owners have kids too.

I don't have kids because I don't want them. It is nothing to do with money.
Some people have dogs because they have been unable to have children.
Your comment is pretty offensive, and is typical of these sort of threads where it goes from a dislike of dogs to attacks on people who happen to have dogs.

I could say that kids are for people who were turned down by dog rescues - as anyone can pop out a kid.

LlynTegid · 28/10/2024 10:58

Whilst agreeing with the sentiment that dogs are about in too many places, and some people should never be dog owners, the particular instance the OP experienced is not one I would object to.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 28/10/2024 10:59

Dogs on public transport are so annoying. So your dog can't stand in an aisle because it's in the way but I don't want your dog lying at my feet either. If it doesn't fit you either need to buy two seats or leave it at home!

I fell over a dog on a bus and twisted my ankle. Dogs that lie down in the bus are a trip hazard. Owners never seem to follow the rule that they have to have a muzzle either.

2024onwardsandup · 28/10/2024 11:23

@Freemanhardyandwillis theres no muzzle rule

There are only a few things in this world over which I get “uptight”.

Unsolicited slobbery, sniffy, barky, jumping up attention from dogs is one, their ubiquitous poop is another.

Shadyshady · 28/10/2024 00:30

Love these sorts of dog threads. Feel a sense of inner glee when I take my dog to places, knowing there's a chance I may be pissing off one of you lot.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 We would get on 😁

It’s part of a broader dumbing down of society - the anthropomorthism of animals into ‘fur babies’ etc.

Dogs have their place and it’s not in urban or semi urban environments.

The ‘happiest dogs’ I have seen are gun dogs in the field during a shoot.

It’s part of a broader dumbing down of society - the anthropomorthism of animals into ‘fur babies’ etc.”

and it’s often accompanied by the dehumanising of children. Comparing them unfavourably with pets and bemoaning their human rights to exist in the same space as the mother of furbabies who “much prefers animals to people”

HowYouSpellingThat10 · 28/10/2024 11:59

This. As a society we are supposed to be better at allergies. Every restaurant now asks if you have allergies.

Yet dogs are not included in any way and if you point it out you should 'get over it'.

In the past dogs that did go in pubs etc were at least just on the floor. Now they are on the seats so it's much harder to avoid the impact even if a dog isn't physically present.

It does seem if you raise any of the issues you are utterly dismissed as loads of responses on here show.

There has to be balance.
