Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

@AgileGreenSeal Us sea swimmers are good litter collecting people whether we have dogs or not 😀

I can agree with you on that point 😊👍

DBD1975 · 28/10/2024 14:32

Bad owners and never had to go to A&E for a dog bite because I am very sensible.

I was bitten by my uncle's dog as a child. He blamed me for chasing my cousins.

I was 3 years old and running on a children's playing field.

Dog owners. 🙄

Yes. My uncle, the dog owner.

I'm just in the car dealership and someone has their dog with them. Obviously very important to get the dog's opinion on these things. 🤣

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/10/2024 14:57

Of course it’s not necessary, but both my dds would have loved to see dogs at any of their open days.

I like dog in pubs, too. Given a choice, I will always choose a doggy pub rather than a no-dogs one.

Actually that I can understand more, as presumably the car is going to be used to transport the dog so the owners would probably want to check it’s ok for that.

I play a rather bulky musical instrument. Its case has been taken to many car dealerships for similar reasons.

I am old and I remember the days when wee solo dogs (usually of indeterminate breed) went determinedly about their day taking zero notice of humans and being zero inconvenience to them either. There were some but not anywhere near the numbers of dogs you see about now.

And they all seemed fixated on their doggy life, ignoring people, rather than these awful idiotic frantic creatures now determined to “be friendly” and “say hello” all the time.

What changed?

Yes mongrel dogs, who were probably far more intelligent and not skittish due to genetic diversity. If you mate dogs with their own grandmother what do you expect. Yes this goes on by pedigree dog breeders to exaggerate features of a breed.

@Freemanhardyandwillis theres no muzzle rule

You do realize that the rules where you live aren't necessarily applicable worldwide? Where I live, dogs are allowed on the bus with a muzzle. Hardly anyone bothers.

So you think it’s reasonable for universities to prioritise dogs above people?

Didn't say that. And they aren't. Not all people hate dogs to the point they can't be around them. They are prioritising people, some of those people own dogs, many more like dogs. Two people brought dogs with them. That's two out of probably hundreds. I hardly think they've prioritised dogs over people, do you? Is the presence of one dog enough to prevent you from going to that uni? How do you function in society?

Sartre · 28/10/2024 16:21

Someone was advertising their new cafe on my local community page the other day and the first question was ‘is it dog friendly?’. I have noticed them becoming more prevalent in places they were always previously banned from and I’m not really a fan.

Sartre · 28/10/2024 16:22

Also no need to bring a dog to an open day at uni. You only need to bring one person along with you to them, I never get it when students bring the whole family along.

Nothing wrong with that. I would be asking too. If the answer is no, then I wont take my dog.
It is better people ask than just turn up with their dog and insist they be let in anyway.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 28/10/2024 00:34

We can't go into shops/cafes/etc which allow them due to DS2 being severely allergic. We are not in a tourist town but and every cafe allows dogs (yes, I've checked...if we go anywhere I have to), the only craft shop in the town allows dogs, all the garden centres allow dogs, all outdoor clothing shops allow dogs, the only book shop allows dogs, there's more but I think you get the idea.

We can't visit these places. They've prioritised animals over humans in spaces that are for humans, excluding some humans by doing so. We will not "get over" other peoples pets restricting where we can go. Everywhere we have to be alert for dogs in places they never used to be. I'm constantly running a mental risk assessment because the next dog we encounter in a building could be DS2's next severe asthma attack. It never used to be this bad; his allergy never used to stop us doing much at all but these days we can't even buy him a pair of school shoes without encountering a dog in the shop.

Even outside, so many walks we meet uncontrolled, off lead dogs with the shout of "it's ok, he's friendly" from someone doing nothing to keep their dog away. Their dog could be the friendliest dog in the world, he's still allergic, it's still not ok to have it approaching strangers. I joined the RSPB because their nearest reserve to us doesn't allow dogs so we can actually have a relaxing walk. The last time we went there was a dog shit in a bag hanging from a tree. Even the dog free areas end up with someone taking dogs in.

Edited

Eateries take food allergies seriously yet dog allergy is fairly common & it's never taken into account & it definitely should b. I dont have asthma but if a dog licks me I end up with itchy hives in the area. If I go into the home of a dog owner my eyes become swollen red & itchy like a bad case of hay-fever. The dog doesnt have to be around if you are allergic the dander. There is also no such thing as hypoallergenic dogs either. I've said I've absolutely nothing against dog lovers. I just don't want them indoors in public places, bars, restaurants, shops hotels etc unless they are assistance dogs which are always well controlled.

Mnetcurious · 28/10/2024 17:27

CatamaranViper · 28/10/2024 09:56

But then surely the same argument applies both ways. Why is it the dog owner's problem if other people don't like dogs?
The dogs were clearly permitted otherwise they would have been asked to leave. If you really hate dogs that much, don't go to places where dogs are allowed.

If you really hate dogs that much, don't go to places where dogs are allowed.

The problem is that dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere now that we’re a dog-crazed country. So avoiding places where there are dogs and finding shops/cafes/pubs where you don’t have to share space with a dog is becoming more and more difficult.

My son can’t be around dogs. It’s not hating dogs, like it’s some kind of preference. It’s a disability, not a choice. He has allergic asthma and, after his last reaction, three doctors and his asthma nurse all say he can’t be anywhere near them. The last time he was in a room with a dog, he required an ambulance for a severe allergic asthma attack. Asthma kills 3 people every day, there’s no doubt in my mind that night he was nearly one of them. So yes, the presence of one dog in a room is enough to prevent him going places. As the A&E doctor informed us, allergies are unpredictable, to do anything less than avoid them would be to play roulette with his life. How does he function in society? With difficulty these days.

Yes they’ve prioritised dogs over people by allowing dogs. People have severe allergies to dogs (I have a family member whose asthma and eczema is triggered massively around certain dogs). A dog does not need to attend a uni open day, but the potential student with an allergy or phobia does.

Any sense on these threads always goes out the window when the dog lovers start comparing dogs with children. How any person can think a poodle or a Staffordshire Bull Terrier is in any way comparable to a human child is beyond me, and making the equivalence is probably a sign of a disturbed mind, IMO.

Anyway, another thread made pointless by dog lovers.

It's pointless starting ANOTHER dog thread fullstop.

What's wrong with bringing your dog's along? They are part of the family too.
Never trust someone who doesn't like dogs.

We have dogs and no they certainly do not get taken everywhere we go however maybe those families had a good reason to bring their dogs. Whatever the reason, I don't see why it should be such an issue for people (unless they don't pick up their dog mess!) or what gives everyone the right to be so judgmental. Life is too short!

VK456 · 28/10/2024 17:57

The obsession with dogs is getting a bit wearying now. There seem to be more people out walking with dogs than without nowadays. And how dare those inconsiderate owners who are beneath stooping to pick their dog’s foul mess up leave it lying outside our doors. Makes me sick.

VK456 · 28/10/2024 17:59

PS It’s not dogs I have a problem with, it’s inconsiderate owners.
