Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

I am desperately hoping the tide will turn against them and their dodgy owners soon. So selfish. I am sick of them being everywhere. Two were in the chemists yesterday, sniffing along the bottom shelves. So gross. Staff too scared to say anything. Pisses me off.

It’s cruel isn’t it. Dogs are not meant to just fit into human lives it’s not what nature intended. They have needs and shopping isn’t one of them . Zero effort on some owners part to do dog centred activities

Dogs have been fitting in with human lives for 14,000 years. Their ability to do this is the secret of their long relationship with us.

On this university open day, which presumably included dozens if not hundreds of families, were you forced to interact with either of these two dogs? Or is it just their presence that bothers you?

Personally, I'm amazed you even noticed them on a day devoted to your DC's future education.

I am so here for this! They are allowed in my local John Lewis, brushing past the clothes etc? I mean WTAF?

I am on the JL customer panel, I complain about their dog policy every time they send me a survey, and have boycotted JL over this. I don't want overpriced clothes with dog slobber on them.

Lou670 · 27/10/2024 22:07

I love dogs. I love my two dogs but I also appreciate that not everyone loves dogs. I don't tend to take my dogs everywhere that I go. I don't take them in to any food establishments even when I could (where permitted). I occasionally will take them to a garden centre cafe and sit in the outdoor seating area.

I think dog owners have to be mindful of people that do not own a dog or want to own one. I hate it when dining out and there are dogs running around and their owner seems oblivious to it. There are so many dog owners that do not have their dogs under control or have taken any time out to train them.

It would be a bit much if dogs did grow up and became functioning members of society.

I'm still waiting for some of my adult family to become as mature and functioning as my dog.

Getonwitit · 27/10/2024 22:08

I love my mutts but i don't take them everywhere or treat them like babies. The problem is the idiotic owners that just had to get a puppy during lockdown even though the didn't have a clue how to train it or what the hell they were going to to do with it after life returned to normal. Thankfully within the next decade all of those fools will only have their dogs collar and photos left as a momento of their late pooch.

I stopped going to Seasalt because the staff kept following my dog around, fussing over her and plying her with biscuits. They, like John Lewis, must think that dog owners are a good customer base for them.

Whatever people’s views on dogs, when it comes to fireworks then please think of wildlife as well as dogs. It’s not just pets that suffer.

https://thereader.mitpress.mit.edu/the-devastating-effects-of-fireworks-on-pets-and-wildlife/

“Some birds have flown so far out to sea, they would not physically have been able to return to land alive. Birds can crash into buildings, get lost and disoriented and literally fall, by the thousands, onto communities.
Because fireworks are launched at night, the full effects on wild animals are challenging to document. Researchers expect that millions of birds are affected around the world and that the results linger after the smoke has disappeared.”

DoNotAdjustYourSex · 27/10/2024 22:11

I work in a couple of shops based in market towns. In the last months I have had to wipe up dog urine, throw away clothes that had been wee’d on. Find a bag to give a dog owner so that she could pick up the dog shit from the middle of the shop, whilst said owner was wailing “oooh, he’s never done that before”. She then left the shit filled bag on our doorstep, and I had to clean the carpet. Just three days ago I had to ask an owner to keep her dog off the furniture as it was literally jumping from one sofa to another, onto a dining table etc. She looked at me with utter disbelief. I’m still working on getting the paw prints off the cream sofa.
I have grown up with dogs, and it’s only in the last 10 years that we have been dog free, because we both went out to work, and felt we would be unable to care for a dog every day.

If you can’t train your dog then leave it at home, in fact leave it at home trained or not, and if you can’t leave a dog at home for a couple of hours then don’t have a dog.

stayathomer · 27/10/2024 22:12

Don’t bring our dog everywhere but it’s basically that the public have learned you don’t leave dogs for hours on their own so I assume some people feel they have no choice- maybe they have barkers, or neighbours who would report them

Dogs have been fitting in with human lives for 14,000 years. Their ability to do this is the secret of their long relationship with us.

Except for the fact that rather than helping us to chase down herds of prey for food in return for sharing our campfire, we're now pushing them around in prams and taking them shopping in John Lewis 😂

Bit of an evolutionary glitch there.

Toptops · 27/10/2024 22:13

I too am sick of dogs everywhere.
I don't mind dogs but don't want to meet them in cafes or shops.
I especially don't want to be tripped up by one on a long, nearly invisible lead.
I once had one piss on the bench I was sitting on which was then borne away by its rude, unapologetic owners back to its DOG PRAM!!!!

People like being needed. And dogs now are really, really needy*.

There's no other animal that can make a human feel more like the centre of the universe than a dog looking up worshipfully, or crying the moment they're out of sight. It's a huge ego boost.

*Literally, some are bred so needy they can't even breathe properly, they can't even walk without hip or back pain. They're born needing humans to keep them alive.

sleepfortheweek · 27/10/2024 22:15

We don't take our dog to cafes or shops locally as she can happily be left for a few
hours. However, when we holiday within the UK we usually take her and so it's nice that some places are dog friendly as it means that we can have a bit more freedom on holiday.

However, she lies on a mat underneath the table when we are in the cafe, and doesn't bark or beg for food. I don't think I'd want to take a dog in that would bother someone else.

And I don't think I'd take her into a retail shop, even though she's well behaved.

One of my neighbours has put a post on the village fb group asking people to tell her when they are having fireworks because of nervous pets.

But we have had to listen to said dog bark, bark and bark in the garden for hours this summer. No one can make a noise and upset the dog, but everyone else has to think of the dog when making a noise. 🙄 selfish.

I’ll be setting up my own anonymous starting post asking said owner when she was going to keep her dog inside because you wanted to hear the fireworks over its barking

Oh come on, regardless of the views on this post "dogs and cats hate fireworks, keep them inside" was on heavy rotation throughout October on the news, Blue Peter, etc, all through the 80s and 90s. This is ANCIENT. Don't forget to check the bonfire for hedgehogs!!!!!

ThisOldThang · 27/10/2024 22:18

We went to a British seaside town in the summer. Walking along the promenade was horrendous. It was overrun with dogs that were straining at the leash, barking and snarling at each other. There were desperate owners trying to keep them apart.

It wasn't much fun with two young children.

I think the problem is that all these dug owners are now trapped in the UK and their only chance of a holiday is a UK resort. This means that the seaside town end up concentrated with dogs, which ruins things for everybody else.

I was in a local park with my young children and a fucking Cane Corso wandered up to us off leech with the arsehole owner giving it the 'Don't worry, he's fine' bullshit.

I don't want your fucking shitty, potentially lethal, dog anywhere near my kids, you total fucking cunt.

Longsight2019 · 27/10/2024 22:19

And as a direct result there is so much dog dirt all over. We are holidaying in a lovely coastal northern fishing village and there are puddles of piss and poop on every walk. I find it hideous to be honest. So many people had stepped in it too, so it gets walked all over.

Awful stuff.

Yes, every year in November and at New Year there are multiple threads by dog owners whingeing about fireworks.

I once pointed out that fireworks are very occasional and can generally be anticipated, but that many people have to put up with barking dogs every single day. Oh my word, the aggression and indignation I got from the dog lovers.

Of course I realise there are lovely, considerate dog owners. But there are a lot of utterly selfish ones.

NotAnotherPylon · 27/10/2024 22:22

One of my sister in law's dogs rubs its arse all over the living room rug and leaves an interesting assortment of skid marks. The last lot looked remarkably like the face of our Lord. Imagine that while you're eating your all day breakfast at the local cafe.

abonymousAnon · 27/10/2024 20:09

Funny enough I was thinking same today! Was having lunch with my kids and a dog charged towards our table! My youngest screamed to be told by the owner “don’t worry! It’s friendly”

Edited

I have a dog and keep mine on a lead and under control at all times (and also keep her out of cafes, shops etc!). these types of owners you describe really make me annoyed. There is a dog owner in our local park whose dog has really poor recall and is constantly jumping up at children, even small children in the hopes of treats. If the parents say anything, the dog owner defends the actions of her dog and then turns aggressive if people argue their point with her. She cannot seem to comprehend that people don’t want her dog jumping up at their children. It’s so infuriating.

Livelovebehappy · 27/10/2024 22:29

Well I guess all you folk will need to get over your dog phobias. They’re here, and here to stay. Life has changed. Dogs are now welcome in most places. Get over it, stop frothing at the mouth, accept that this is the way it is, and move on…..it must be exhausting having so much pent up hate and angst.
