Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

No, you don't understand and have no experience of a situation where a pram helps both dog and owner have fulfilling and happy days. It's not harming you.

I do understand, I just don't agree that its good for the dog.

But it’s ok for little Jonny to be wiping snot & shit particles on the handles? Unless your friend or other shoppers are licking the trolley as they take their shopping bags out, it’s nothing to get worked up about. We should all be thoroughly washing our hands after touching trolleys anyway. There’s literally rat piss over everything outside.

Dogs don’t wipe their arses or their feet. I hope parents keep their kids in the front bit of the trolley not the bit where I put my food as I’d find that pretty disgusting as well.

I like dogs, despite being bitten by one once.
I have friends and family with dogs and the logistics of trying to make arrangements around their dogs drives me fucking mad. Can't do xyz because of the dog. And no, you can't bring your dog to my house to invade my elderly cat's space

Also kids grow up to become functioning members of society. Most dogs are helpless and annoying forever 😬🤭

Totally agree @CanalBoots I see a group of ladies at a local park with their little dogs in prams. The dogs cannot walk all the way there and back, but all can manage a potter at the park. These dogs are happy and enjoying their little outings and their elderly owners are getting out and socialising. Seriously why are people upset by this? What harm is it causing? Just because a dog gets old it doesn’t mean they need putting to sleep.

Poffy · 27/10/2024 21:49

I wonder why people take their dogs to cafes? It never use to happen. But then people never used to keep dogs in cages. I don't much like other people's dogs just like I don't like other people's children but I really don't understand why animal lovers do this.

Were the university happy to let them in?

I don't take my dogs anywhere other than for a walk or to the vets.

And you most certainly have happier dogs than those that drag/get dragged to shops by clueless idiot owners.

Why is it bad for a healthy dog to be taken out in a pram by their owner if it is the only way that the dog and owner can enjoy each others company, a change of scene and a little exercise and company when they get to their destination?

Many people have this routine for years and the dog continues to thrive.

SqueakyDinosaur · 27/10/2024 21:54

I was singing in a cathedral today and was slightly startled to see a small French bulldog making its way up towards the Communion rail with its owner. It's a regular, apparently. Called Lola.

70sShmeventies · 27/10/2024 21:55

It’s got totally ridiculous. I went to my local cafe and there were 6 dogs in there, totally ruined it for us as a family having them there, barking and scuffling about the place with their entitled owners. My son has a phobia now after having been knocked over and barked at endless times on the beach (we live in a seaside town). I’m so sick
of them jumping all over me when I’m out. This was never a thing, can we go back to that please?

Bucketsof · 27/10/2024 21:55

dogs are animals.
soiling footpaths everywhere as owners/walkers can’t be bothered

they and their food production are horrible for environment
cats too

love how actual, trained service dogs can support people with needs. Not fake “support animals”

I have dog, it’s my last. It’s selfish waste and environmentally bad.

In my town people will take their dog to the moor, park or beach and then call in for a sociable coffee in the cafe as part of the dog walk. Dog's mostly so tired they kip under the table. It's just a happy part of people's day. I'm 60 and this has been the case as long as I can remember. It's not a new thing here.

theprincessthepea · 27/10/2024 22:00

What annoys me is that they are treated better than children… I agree they are everywhere. And dog owners seem to have more restrictions than parents - e.g. my colleague could only stay for a meeting for 2 hours because she had to go back to her dog. She also declined an impromptu lunch with a clients because she planned to go back to her dog by 2pm. I have 2 kids and was surprised that they weren’t as high maintenance!

nyxel · 27/10/2024 22:00

In pubs, I wish they'd at least have a "dog area" and a "dog-free area" like in the olden days with smoking. I was in the Yorkshire dales last week, only one pub in walking distance from my accommodation that did food & I was completely surrounded by dogs. One dog's tail was hitting me as it wagged - and no, they do not de-stress me at all, I just felt nervous and very stressed the whole time I was eating, but there was nowhere else to go, no other tables free, no other pubs nearby.

We do a lot of hiking, and one of our hikes took in a local beauty spot, so lots of people parking up and doing a short walk to and from the area, but this beauty spot is in prime farming land, so cows and sheep everywhere, also ground nesting birds, and I was shocked at the number of dogs off leads - do some owners think farmland is just some kind of dog playground?

Whataninvasionofprivacy · 27/10/2024 22:00

Why do you have a dog if you clearly dislike them so much? Feel sorry for your dog.

Those shopping dogs probably all get lovely walks and taken to the vet too you know.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 27/10/2024 22:02

I was on Oxford St, London, yesterday, which was absolutely heaving with people, and saw some poor dog on a lead nearly getting trampled underfoot in the crowd. I felt so sorry for it, it must have felt completely overwhelmed.

I was discussing this yesterday with DH. We went to a local shopping outlet snd there were dogs everywhere. Since when did dogs enjoy shopping for clothes? 😳🙄

It’s cruel isn’t it. Dogs are not meant to just fit into human lives it’s not what nature intended. They have needs and shopping isn’t one of them . Zero effort on some owners part to do dog centred activities

It would be a bit much if dogs did grow up and became functioning members of society.

I was in a busy packed cafe a few months back. It had at least 10 dogs packed into a small space. Unsurprisingly, one of the dogs went for another dog and a dog fight ensued. Someone was knocked to the ground and one dog bit the other. It was quite intimidating for the customers and I suspect horrible for the other dogs. It's pretty irresponsible not to limit the number of dogs in a cafe.

With my two dogs, I'd always eat or have a drink outside if I brought them with me after a walk. Just in case.

Surely it's a H&S risk for cafe owners if a dog attacks another dog?

Gingercatlover · 27/10/2024 22:04

One of my neighbours has put a post on the village fb group asking people to tell her when they are having fireworks because of nervous pets.

But we have had to listen to said dog bark, bark and bark in the garden for hours this summer. No one can make a noise and upset the dog, but everyone else has to think of the dog when making a noise. 🙄 selfish.
