Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

Also kids grow up to become functioning members of society. Most dogs are helpless and annoying forever 😬🤭

Exactly what I was going to say!

Rosienose · 27/10/2024 22:32

It’s another reason why modern life really is rubbish

I mean this kindly, but your focus should have been on your DS, and looking at what the UNI had to offer, and being there to support him. That you were so easily distracted by a couple of dogs amongst the presumably hundreds of people there, suggests your attention span and boredom levels are pretty low.

@AutumnLeaves24 err, because I don't have a dog, I'm scared of dogs and they don't belong in food establishments and shops?

@monkeyblonde

if the cafe owners say they are, they are, they determine the rules, no one else.

Well I guess all you folk will need to get over your dog phobias. They’re here, and here to stay. Life has changed. Dogs are now welcome in most places. Get over it, stop frothing at the mouth, accept that this is the way it is, and move on…..it must be exhausting having so much pent up hate and angst.

In 10-15 years all of the lockdown dogs will be gone and things will start to revert back.

flowersmakemehappy · 27/10/2024 22:38

Four dogs in the womenswear department today in Liverpool JL. It was packed and their owners seemed oblivious that the dogs were sniffing etc the clothes. Didn’t even know they allowed dogs, I was disgusted tbh. Liverpool One was rammed too with Halloween events and the amount of dogs around was ridiculous

I feel the same.
I'm not a pet person really but it seems like I'm in a minority. I just don't understand why you'd want to burden yourself? There's animals outside everywhere you could admire from a distance.. and the bonus being they are mostly living out their free natural lives rather than trapped in a house as entertainment for someone.
The dogs just make me feel a bit sad... once they might have been wolves roaming the forests in a pack. Now they are bred to look ridiculous, have health problems and not even have the intelligence to run away if let go. So docile and upsettingly grateful.
I get some people love them like a member of their family.. but I'd never be able to stop feeling sad every time I looked at them personally.

There is an unconditional love you have with a dog and the bond between owner and the dog is unique and unbreakable. If you have never experienced that - it’s a shame. It’s never a burden. My dog is very sick right now, yet nothing is too much trouble, I will look after him until the end.

If this rubbish is what you say when you mean it kindly, I'm wondering how the alternative would look like.

People are perfectly capable of noticing more than one thing, and dogs on absurd places just stand out.

Always had dogs, I have two rescues that cause me issues because I like problem dogs but the average dog owner pisses me off. Mine are only out on a walk or vets, I don't walk them on the street but they get a good 3h a day away from people and on my way to our spots we're constantly confronted/attacked by horribly managed dogs, one of mine almost lost a leg due to an out of control bull breed.
When I let them out in the morning for a wee, the neighbour's dogs scream and yap at their owners to let them out so they can fence fight and make a horrible racket at mine.
Last week I had an off lead boxer slobber all over my tights on my way to the shops (on the PAVEMENT) while the owner looked on proudly.
I'm often woken up by barking and as a noise sensitive person it rattles me. Last year I had to report another neighbour after putting up with her senile dog yapping all morning for 6 months hoping she'd do something about it.
If my dogs bark outside they're brought straight in and they're never allowed to interact with strangers. Other dog owners piss me off much more than dog haters, despite being a life long dog lover I've started to hate other people's dogs too.

FloralGums · 27/10/2024 22:39

With the exception of working or assistance dogs, no one should be getting a dog nowadays. We are in a climate emergency and dogs have a high carbon paw print. They are a luxury the planet cannot afford.
They are destroying our streams and rivers with their flea and tic treatment but I every day I see dog owners let their dogs go in our local stream.

@AutumnLeaves24 kind of my point- it feels that the power is with the dog owners and not the cafe owners. For some reason everyone is too scared to challenge this new norm?

It’s because if anyone says “no”, some of them start up really aggressive social media campaigns and no business wants that.

Responsible owners would just accept “no” as an answer - and I think the Venn diagram for “problem dogs” and “entitled owners” is pretty much a circle!

Nope. There’s many people still investing in dogs now. It seems to be popular amongst young couples, who see the benefits of owning a dog as an alternative to having children. And whilst many people may have been put off them previously due to restrictions on where they could take them, that’s now been resolved, as you can literally take them anywhere. Absolutely #teamdog here.

As long as they're not making sandwiches & baking cakes, where's the problem?

They drool they shake their heads while drooling and it flings everywhere fur gets everywhere some pee some poo some bark because "tee hee" they are being "protective" of their owner

Oh the hilarity

I like it. It’s one of the ways in which life has changed for the better from my point of view. I love dogs but can’t have one and I really enjoy the fact that I get to encounter them more often these days. Every cafe trip is made better for me by a random dog. The best walks are the ones where I see the most dogs.

It’s the lockdown dogs that are the issue the ‘newer’ ones seem better socialised / trained and owners more responsive to their needs and don’t just go shopping and to cafes but more walks and outdoors stuff putting their dogs first. Lockdown dogs seem to be more nervous and badly behaved

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, it seems like there's loads of nervous dogs that can't be left alone and have to be taken everywhere or put in doggy daycare, why weren't there all these nervous dogs 10+ years ago? Were owners just a bit tougher with their pets than they are now or has their been a decline in dog mental health?

This is an easy one to answer. The number of dogs per capita has increased, and the number of people has increased. QED there are an inordinate number of dogs these days compared to even ten years ago.

Next, we have an increased number of adults who have anxiety, and many other similar conditions. This transmits to the dogs, so we have an increased number of nervous dogs. So it's actually a decline in human mental health, not so much dog mental health, although the latter is the consequence of the former.

Lastly, we have the majority of owners who do not know how to train / interact with their dog. This leads to your classic 'Fenton' moments, dogs jumping at people, etc.

I am a dog trainer and see this constantly. 99% of owners are in complete denial.

DanielaDressen · 27/10/2024 22:46

I work at a university. One of my fellow lecturers is severely allergic to dogs. I’m waiting for the day a student says they have an assistance dog they need to bring with them. I have no idea what we’d do. We’re a very small team, it wouldn’t be feasible for one person to not teach an entire year group. Does the student get to bring their dog? What happens if that means someone can’t do their job?

100%

Positive only training is an epidemic. It doesn't work for dogs with a brain bigger than a pea.

Theunamedcat · 27/10/2024 22:48

There has certainly been an uptick in entitled dog owners I redirected a dogs nose away from my crotch to be treated with "oooh we found a other dog hater" lady 🙄 I don't allow dogs to sniff my crotch doesn't mean I hate dogs and yet AGAIN having to tell the "she's friendly" brigade that my autistic child is unpredictable around dogs so please call them back because he has an umbrella and could lash out suddenly (he won't if he is bare handed because they might "touch" him) I'm there struggling with bags keys and (not so small) child fucking do everyone a favour and control it OK?

I know! It's INSANE! My family members in the UK won't leave their dog at home alone for more than a single hour. Even though they leave the back door open and he can be in and out of the house and garden. They take him to daycare which costs almost as much as a daycare for human children, and plan their activities around him. This is definitely a recent madness... I love dogs, but when I grew up there weren't doggy daycares! For people going away overnight, maybe - but for people out the house for 6/8 hours at work, no way! I live abroad and when I tell people about this, they think I'm lying because it's so hilariously nutty!

Or, maybe we should be louder and more consistent in complaining, so the businesses understand that welcoming one cohort is actually annoying and losing the other one. It seems that some are hoping to have their cake and eat it when it comes to this topic.
