Dogs are everywhere?!

I took DS to a university open day today. Two separate families had brought their dog with them! Is this someone I've missed?! Why is this necessary?!

I know that being around dogs is said to be beneficial to health, reducing blood pressure and so on. Dogs have the opposite effect on me and raise my blood pressure.

I imagine a PP was speaking about the section in JL that has appliances, kitchen equipment, crockery and cutlery and I should think it possible that a medium to large sized dog might knock things over with a swish of the tail.

I understand that some owners regard their dogs as they do their family and want to take them everywhere, but I’d prefer not to use cafes and restaurants where dogs are permitted.

But don't tend to shit on pavements for others to walk in or physically attack people/other dogs in public.

Since when has that been a dog problem rather than an owner problem? Do you expect the dog to pick up
its own shit?

Crispynoodle · 27/10/2024 21:32

💯 agree I live near a small seaside town and every other person is parading their dogs up and down the prom. Then in the local big town people are bringing their dogs to the town centre. Why oh why? I'm sure the doggos would much rather run in a park or field

Evidence shows that keeping dogs is very good for people both in terms of mental and physical health. Why is it the current culture bad for society?

In a lifetime of dog ownership and country living I have never known one person make their dog live too long with painful conditions. People will break their own hearts rather than see their dog suffer.

It will be sad if people can not afford to keep dogs. They bring a lot of comfort to people especially the old and lonely.

Oh well, if you've never known it to happen it must be true then 😂

I had a weekend in Whitby over the summer. It was like being at Crufts, but not in a good way.

monkeyblonde · 27/10/2024 21:33

@StarDolphins agree - in the same way that the dog is not choosing to hang out in JL. But the normalisation of it has seemingly come out of nowhere?

But let kids in, whose parents seem incapable of clearing up after them. Crying, screaming, running around whilst other people are trying to enjoy a meal and waiting staff are navigating around them with hot food…even changing babies on mats on the floor! Yep! I’ve seen it all 😡

At the risk of sounding a bit dim, it seems like there's loads of nervous dogs that can't be left alone and have to be taken everywhere or put in doggy daycare, why weren't there all these nervous dogs 10+ years ago? Were owners just a bit tougher with their pets than they are now or has their been a decline in dog mental health?

Possibly. Or possibly people just talk about it more? There seems to have been a similar increase in Mental Health problems for humans, particularly children.

Dog prams are a whole new level of human insanity imho. I've seen a few recently with obese dogs being pushed around in them.

Reminds me of that cartoon Wall-E where the humans on the space ship can no longer walk.

When my dogs have got to the point of being in too much pain to walk then a decent owner would do the right thing. If it's obesity, then the dog need exercise.

Oh do fuck off
My dog had cancer and before she was in pain I took her out in a pushchair just so she could get fresh air and a sniff around

CanalBoots · 27/10/2024 21:35

HalloweenHannah · 27/10/2024 21:26

If the dog is old and unable to walk then it's not perfectly healthy. You're just kidding yourself there and not really thinking about the welfare of the animal.

Also, here's a news flash, you can actually leave a dog at home for short periods. It will cope.

So no, dog prams are not needed and are purely for the owners.

HTH

I said that the dog is old and unable to "walk far" - not unable to walk at all.
Many dogs live long after they're able to "walk far".

It's not a news flash that you can leave a dog at home. Every dog owner knows that, but you don't have to leave it there all the time.

My mum took her little dog to the park in a pram when he got old. He couldn't walk all the way there and back but when there he could get out and potter about with other dogs enjoying himself. It was good for both of them.

You are talking about something you don't understand.

Exactly what I was thinking. We could do with an “Animal Haters Corner” section where they can all froth to their hearts content.

I work in a dog friendly office. It’s absolutely brilliant. We have at least one dog in every day (the business owners) and sometimes two or three. We have outside space for them and a local park for walkies.

That would be my worst nightmare. I can’t understand why this is not discriminatory. Your workplace is not healthy.

And it’s not about animal hating. Some of us put human life and well-being as a tad more important. 🙄

Point still stands though.

Yes I do understand. I just don't agree. There's a difference between the two.

I’m mostly just sick of the stupid dog ad begging for free photos on here.

Maybe whoever the sponsor is would get a better response by asking for photos of dogs in inappropriate locations from the haters on this thread

or even artfully shitting everywhere

purina could go next with a request for filthy cats beheading endangered baby penguin bollards

Facebook seems to be full of people with dogs complaining about other peoples fireworks. You enslaved the poor animal and made in stay in your house - don't blame others because it is then scared of noise.

"Enslaved and made them stay in your house" 🤣 fireworks are anti social it's not as simple as other people making noise. The fireworks around my way sound like bombs going off!

FrenchFancie · 27/10/2024 21:39

Well my BIL can’t come to his parents 50th wedding anniversary dinner because the restaurant won’t let the dog in and apparently it’s impossible for it to be left alone. We should all change plans to go somewhere dog friendly, apparently.

it absolutely boggles my brain!!

I think what you fail to note @WhatNoRaisins is that years ago the majority of dogs were not treated half as well as they are today. I remember one of my grandfathers dogs - who lived outside in a kennel by the way not indoors - was so terrified of fireworks one year he scratched and chew chunks off the front door because he was so stressed and desperate to get inside. There was no one home as they were out celebrating New Years and the dogs were let out of the kennel to ''protect the property''. I can imagine thousands of dogs over decades spending nights terrified in their barns and kennels but the owners were either none the wiser or just did not really care.
Also a lot of people did not care half as much, not to give my grandparents generation as an example but I remember that they all had dogs to basically alert you when someone came onto the property and they all lived outside. When the dog got sick or injured and the treatment was going to be expensive they got put down instead.
Seeing both sets of my grandparents interact with the animals they own today reminded me how little their generation actually understood animal behavior, stresses and triggers.
So I don't think dogs/pets have gotten softer, for the most part they are just better understood.

OonaStubbs · 27/10/2024 21:41

The government needs to crack down on dogs, they are everywhere now and it is becoming a real problem.

Newsenmum · 27/10/2024 21:41

StarDolphins · 27/10/2024 21:00

Are you new here? There’s lots of dog hating threads here already that you could’ve added this to? 1 each day I think the going rate is.

In contrast, kids are everywhere too & they can be just as annoying as dogs.

Kids are humans.

HalloweenHannah · 27/10/2024 21:38

No, you don't understand and have no experience of a situation where a pram helps both dog and owner have fulfilling and happy days. It's not harming you.

SunnieShine · 27/10/2024 21:43

AgileGreenSeal · 27/10/2024 20:44

Children are HUMANS.

They have a right to be where other humans are, unlike dogs which are ANIMALS.

I feel exhausted having to explain this.

Children often scream and run around in shops and cafes though.

StarDolphins · 27/10/2024 21:44

Newsenmum · 27/10/2024 21:41

Kids are humans.

Well that’s ok then. Let them be annoying because ‘they’re human’. Just like that.

HalloweenHannah · 27/10/2024 21:44

@WhatNoRaisins

Also don't forget the billion pound industry that has grown up around dog ownership that relies on us thinking a lot of things are necessary. Doggie daycare, dog grooming parlours, dog behavior experts, expensive medical treatments and operations, clothes, food, toys, beds, prams...The UK pet industry is huge.

What happened to Barbara Woodhouse and Bonios 😂
