Just heard on the news abroad he fell from the third floor off a hotel in Buenos Aires, if true it's very sad as he was so young and seemed like a lovely guy

I am also amazed that Britney is still with us. (Glad though!)

Charlize43 · 17/10/2024 20:11

I spent most of the day reading about him and his troubled life. He reminded me a lot of Amy Winehouse. I think his troubles started before he found fame and that he somehow mistakenly thought that being famous was going to be the balm that was going to make everything all right, when in reality fame can be very lonely and isolating.

We shouldn't also forget that both Liam & Amy succumbed to substance abuse problems quite early on, and that can lead to very messy, erratic lives: According to Maya Henry, Liam was quite obsessive & abusive with his gfs...

I hope both are in peace now. RIP.

soupfiend · 17/10/2024 20:12

What do you mean his trouble started before he found fame, what at 13/14?

Was he an unhappy child then?

Appalonia · 17/10/2024 20:19

This is an interview he did a few years ago with Steven Bartlett. He's very honest and open about his struggles. Maybe people might want to watch it for themselves to ascertain how well he was coping with fame...

Wouldn't be surprised tbh. In the infamous DM article comparing him to David Brent, he gives a very revealing quote trying to explain why his accent changed during an interview.

"...but added he is a 'social chameleon' whose accent is 'ever-changing' depending on who he is around, before insisting he is normally 'good at accents'.

That sounds exactly like a euphemism for neurodivergent masking. There is a lesser known trait of ASD which is an unusual accent or picking up other accents while speaking. ND is also linked to creativity, music, art but also MH issues and addiction.

Cantcomprehend · 17/10/2024 20:27

I've spent much of my day thinking of Liam and his family and feeling the sadness.
I've read the conspiracy theories and for a few minutes really wanted them to be true.

Unfortunately I think he was just a very troubled lost soul and having lost a parent and sibling to addiction, it's so hard.
You wonder why you couldn't be enough to stop it and it makes me very sad that his little boy will go through life with that in his head. No matter how many times people tell you addiction is an illness, that thought is always there.

Rest easy Liam, thank you for the music and sharing what you loved.

Did he ever say he was neurodivergent or have you just reached for that because his accent changed (which it does for many people, ND or NT)

Patienceinshortsupply · 17/10/2024 20:30

I do admit to being worried that we glorify those who die young and so many these days are from drug/alcohol addiction. But I appreciate that's not a conversation for today.

My heart goes out to his wee boy today, having to grapple with knowing Daddy isn't ever going to see him again. You can only hope he retains some memories of him, 7 is so very young. DH lost his Mum around 17 and he feels sad that he doesn't remember more than he does.

Imjustlikeyou · 17/10/2024 20:34

It’s very sad. I have thought about him a lot today, (a 30 something year old mother of 3 who has never been a one direction fan.) But it is such a shame isn’t it? So young… but unfortunately this happens every day to ‘normal’ people you just don’t hear about it. Liam is at peace, he is just… asleep. But I so feel for his family left to mourn him. Just sad

The comments on that article are awful.

lyingonthebeach · 17/10/2024 20:43

It's terribly sad when a young person dies. I feel for for loved ones.

But I had never heard of him.

And all this public grieving for a pop star...................what about really brave and selfless people who really did give their all for us.

Congratulations, you win the insensitivity award today.

What a stupidly ignorant and heartless comment.
Feel good about yourself?

Tittat50 · 17/10/2024 20:46

@User75235 I also see characteristics that remind me of ND loved ones. Life is often much more difficult with added problems related to MH co morbidities for many. With regards to any drug related issues- it's so often just self medicating rather than just a choice, (whoever said that.)

Really enjoyed LPs podcast with Steven Bartlett. Steven's great at relating and getting people to open up

Jesus, an ND reach now. Why on earth would you say this, what is the point of saying this?

Because he changes his accent?

There is room to grieve for both.

But this thread is about Liam. Your post was so unnecessary.

I think we can have compassion for both can’t we? I know I can!

I’m 50, never been a one direction fan but I feel saddened by todays news, a young man has died in quite awful circumstances and there are suggestions of mental health issues, it is very sad! Particularly in the context of his fame at a very young age and life in the media.

My thoughts are with his family and friends and his young son.

Agree lots of people die. We only know about liam payne because he was on x factor etc.
What a out all the other people who died yesterday.
Lots of children sadly lose their parents too.

Drug addiction (and other addictions) are never a choice. Never.

You can choose not to start taking them.

Bumperjumper · 17/10/2024 21:03

PassingStranger · 17/10/2024 20:54

You can choose not to start taking them.

Well of course. But when you’re young and famous and in the limelight surrounded by people who tell you you’re invincible, surrounded by people who you deem to be successful who are also doing it all, it’s surely not as straight as just saying no.

Totallybannanas · 17/10/2024 21:15

It's very sad situation. I think alot of these young stars, Britney, Justin B, Amy, Robbie, Jessie have been used and exploited by the music industry at such a young age. They are thrusted into the limelight, surrounded by drugs, alcohol, fame away from their family. Yes they earn lots of money but it sounds for most of them they have no say or control, are over worked, travelling for long periods, different station, country, TV show. Everyone using them for their own gain and no concern regarding their health or emotional wellbeing. Then when they are finally done and go their own way they seem lost and seem to keep chasing the level of fame they had. They never quite have the same level of success Or feel happy or content with what have already achieved or have.

Feelingathomenow · 17/10/2024 21:16

And I think a lot of people forget how boring the vast majority of the touring day actually is. Apart from a couple of hours on stage, a few interviews asking the same questions it’s basically sitting in hotel rooms, planes and airports. There’s a choice on what to fill your time with, many just get bored and take the freely available drugs and drink, because that’s what everyone round you is doing. Those who survive long term touring have usually found a way to productivity fill that time.

LolaLouise · 17/10/2024 21:16

Its being reported now that he did jump - the source is a bit iffy (Perez Hilton), but the mechanism of injury suggest jump not fall.

Righteouspuppy · 17/10/2024 21:19

Always sad that someone has died but young addicts die every single day and most of them haven’t had the chances this man had. I don’t get people saying that they’ve been ‘thinking about him and feeling terribly sad’ all day. Just bizarre

PassingStranger · 17/10/2024 21:20

"seemed like a lovely guy" or his ex got a restraining order 2 days ago because he wouldn't leave her - or her mum, or friends - alone and constantly bombarded them all from tons of different accounts and phone numbers. Even though he's been in a relationship with someone else for a year.

Edited

People need to slow down, calm down and stop having so many relationships.
Cheryl Cole had been married twice already when they met.
She was pregnant within a year and that broke up.
There were several girlfriends for Liam Payne since, one was an engagement.
Slow down everyone.
If he'd still been with CC maybe this wouldn't have happened...
People just want instant gratification all the time and relationships are so disposable all the time. It dosent bring happiness or security keep.moving on and jumping ship.

BirthdayRainbow · 17/10/2024 21:21

I've read it's been reported/questioned it was an accident as was he semi-conscious or unconscious. I hate speculation but I hate insinuation more.
