Just heard on the news abroad he fell from the third floor off a hotel in Buenos Aires, if true it's very sad as he was so young and seemed like a lovely guy

Drug addiction (and other addictions) are never a choice. Never.

This is the things that people who haven’t suffered from addiction don’t get. I’ve had struggles with alcohol throughout my life. Back in my student days I dabbled with a bit of ‘this or that’ and it wasn’t for me, never got addicted. I remember being in Vegas about 7 years ago and walking though the casinos. I could easily play roulette or the slots with £10 and then wonder off for the rest of the holiday never really thinking about it again. I think I’ve bought a scratch card twice in my life for the novelty etc and yet there are people in bookmakers, in Vegas, sweatily buckets, shaking, suicidal, who have nothing, literally prepared to bet their life for another spin of that roulette. I can’t relate because it means nothing to me. But maybe they can’t relate to why I’d drink 2 bottles of wine just because they’re there. I’ve seen people told they’re going to die if they do xyz one more time and they cannot atop themselves. It’s really not as simple as it being a choice. I wish it was.

Completely agree with you and very eloquently put. Anyone who has been there or watched someone else go through it understands. I used to be a heavy smoker. I HATED smoking, it was horrible, smelt and tasted horrible, was expensive and stupid. It embarrassed me but I just couldn’t walk away. I eventually did and I’m so grateful i managed to escape. People say ‘just quit’ but wouldn’t we all if it were that simple? I hope you find peace with your addictions. x

Contestants haven't done the hard yards which builds up your defences.

Let's be fair, it's not as if traditionally pop stars were known for their excellent mental health.

Exactly. Oasis built themselves up doing small gigs in pubs.

I just read a book written by one of their roadies.

Jesus the amount of drug abuse they did was shocking

BlarneyGirl · 17/10/2024 18:22

How terrible R.I.P. Liam fly high with the angels.

Agree. The casting couch is still a thing in acting and music. Youngsters are still given drugs and/or passed around by predators, some of whom were former abused youngsters themselves.

I would never encourage my kids into showbiz.

RIP Liam. Cannot imagine what his family must be going through,

Ah shit naively I thought the casting couch days were over, especially after the #metoo movement & RR Kelly.. & now Diddy

It's sickening

Inyournewdress · 17/10/2024 18:33

I agree with PP that people shouldn’t be airing every detail, but if as it appears he was using heroin then I actually think that is worth sharing. Many people will see this story and maybe it will impress upon them how dangerous it is if someone who they saw as young and well and successful can be suddenly gone in this way. You can have a hell of a lot of problems that can spiral and spiral but it’s when heroin enters the scene that they kill you.

There's a lot of people here blaming the trauma of fame but tbh he was smoking crack in his hotel room, the pictures on SM show the paraphernalia clearly. You don't bore holes in coke cans and light tea lights cos you're making an art installation do you.
He wasn't allowed in the pool cos staff saw him intoxicated, they escorted him back to his room and he was shouting that he wanted to go in the pool and by the looks of it tried to dive from his balcony hence why he went head first.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that many people on this thread haven't done crack so let me simply say that it is not conducive to making the smartest decisions.

It's sad. But every death of this type is complex with a whole range of issues including addiction, mental illness and perhaps also fear of being further exposed for his alleged domestic violence.

It's easy to try to make sudden young death less scary by seizing on some kind of lesson that can be learned from it but honestly as an ex addict my main takeaway is to be reminded once again of how horrific class A drugs are. How they strip a person of their soul, dignity and decency.

Other than that, it's just sad. I feel greatly for his family and especially his little by.

‘Sniff’ is being promoted everywhere in media and glamourised.it’s used openly in pubs and clubs & people mocked if they don’t partake. No one seems to be talking about how upper type drugs can lead to a cycle of heroin and come down drugs. It’s scary for parents of teens and young adults how normalised it’s become.

Cremacreme · 17/10/2024 18:45

Yep I don’t get the shock about pop star doing drugs when it’s so rife across society.

He spoke about at the height of his fame that the band were locked in hotel rooms for their own safety due to the presence of fans - with minibars. Dave from Depeche Mode had a drug issue as a lot of people know and I remember an interview where he said - he could access all the drugs he wanted because money was never going to run out. Like - One direction split when Liam was 24-he was a multi millionaire - with struggles. It's just a shame he didn't stay clean after his last rehab stint. Tragic really

They literally went from school kids to recognisable superstars in a matter of weeks. That's not a lot of adjustment. And their first tour they would have either their bandmates (other teens who've just become famous) or managers/agents etc who are making money out of them, as their primary source of info/guidance....neither of which is going to be the best support....

This is eerie.

To me that video shows how soulless their existence had become. As Liam said in his interview with Stephen Bartlett, they were locked in their hotel rooms after their gigs for their own protection ( with a mini bar). So he had a ' party for one ', which went on for years. That's no way to live. I'm not surprised he ended up with a drug addiction. Very sad indeed.

The clips I’ve seen of him online I didn’t get the impression of a “lovely guy”, I’m sorry.

Anyone young dying is terrible and I’m very sorry for his family and his son but let’s be honest - we know nothing about what he was really like and now with his ex coming out about him abusing her - everyone who dies doesn’t have to be deified into some kind of saint.

We don’t know what he was like or what was going on with him. One of the casualties of fame I guess.

I don't know why you've quoted me as your comment has nothing to do with what I said. I said I didn't like a comment. I didn't comment on whether he was lovely or not as I didn't know him.

that was written by Louis and Harry, rumoured to be about Harry's relationship with Taylor Swift. But of a reach calling it eerie

You say that like it was inevitable or an actual reason. He obviously had people bring drugs and alcohol to his room, and there are plenty of other things he could have done for entertainment.

If my OH was locked in a hotel room he'd probably never even spot there was a mini bar, he'd be too busy gaming. Drugs would never cross his mind, he wouldn't even know how to get them.

And presumably someone in Liam's situation could easily have had a friend or assistant in his hotel suite to keep him company, plus demand all kinds of things for the room itself.

Feelingathomenow · 17/10/2024 19:34

It’s incredibly sad that a father, son, brother and friend has died. Unfortunately this happens every day. We’re not sure of the circumstances but deaths through misadventure, drugs, poor mental health to those people happen every day.

We put a facade on “famous people” and believe the perfect mask, people seem to be shocked when they realise these people are just as susceptible as everyone else to all the “bad things” We are shocked when the things we are told will make us happy, wealth, success in our careers, beautiful partners etc actually prove not to be magic talismans that protect people from the bad stuff.

Some people can handle the pressures of fame, others can’t, just like the pressures of any profession, it suits some but not others.

But we need to start seeing these people, as just that, people. We need to stop this celebrity culture, we should start being interested in the standard of art they produce rather than the state of what should be their private relationship - why is that of interest? We need to stop creating heroes out of 17 year olds - give them wings and they tend to fly too close to the sun.

So RIP to that son, brother father and friend. Those things are the greatest part of us.

@cheezncrackers exactly, there are loads of famous young people we are surprised are ALIVE. Lindsay Lohan, Justin Beiber, Demi Lovato, Daniel Radcliffe

Britney spears worries me.

Britney spears worries me.

She's deeply damaged.

But is it any wonder.

She was badly abused by her family.

Amd by Kevin federline. He wouldn't let her see her children for a long time

Yea but your OH is not around the same people as these bands. A lot of the music industry are big into drink and drugs to excess
