Do children still go trickle treating?

Moved house since last Halloween and now living on an estate. No kids myself but don't know if kids still go trickle treating at strangers houses? Happy to decorate and get sweets in

I live on a cul de sac and get about 50-60 kids a year - in groups a few at a time.

We have a rule that they only knock at doors where they have put Halloween decs up, so in that way they know that they are welcome and we are prepared and the infirm are not disturbed.

I normally stick a lantern out to signal they are welcome - nearly panicked last year as got way more callers than expected and as sweets ran low, I threw some fruit into the treat options and was really pleasantly surprised when they were the first to go.

Choochoo21 · 14/10/2024 21:17

I have always called it trickle treating (early 30s) until a couple of years ago when someone asked me to repeat what I’d just said.

I genuinely thought that was what it was called and I never thought to correct myself, as I didn’t know I was wrong.

I don’t know how I got to my age without realising.

AhBiscuits · 14/10/2024 21:19

She's not interested in whether people go, the thread was just to give her the opportunity to mock someone who thinks it's trickle treating.

Yes, rule in our area is to only knock on people’s door who have a pumpkin or decorations.

CowboyJoanna · 14/10/2024 19:36

Yep. I can confirm lots of parents on this new build estate let their snotty children go round knocking on doors begging for sweets (or for the older kids, cigarettes/vapes)

My children are not among them. Grin

I assume you’re children are far too sophisticated for begging with the commoners

Isn't that the rule in everyone's area?

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 14/10/2024 21:32

Love trickle treating. God there are fun sponges on ere. 😳😆

Yes, DD does but the neighbours actively WANT us to. So it’s arranged on WhatsApp and they’re on the drive ways /doors waiting for us. We literally feel we have to and DD isn’t bothered! 🙈🤣

I personally leave a bowl of treats on the drive and we decorate etc and last year there were still some sweets left in the bowl!

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 14/10/2024 21:33

@CowboyJoanna vapes ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

God people can be mean. It's obviously a typo. Where I live trick or treating goes on. If you would like kids to knock then decorate, if not, they will most likely leave you alone.

Edited

A typo TWICE?

BetterOffDeadWillNeverFindAMan · 14/10/2024 21:38

i bloody hope so ive got tons of chocolate and ive decorated !!! i love halloween and i love children. love seeing their cute costumes and adorable smiles and gratitude when i give them sweets. i live for halloween :3

Kinneddar · 14/10/2024 21:38

Ok so I called it trickle treating to see what the responses would be

Yeah right, so you did 🙄

You called it the wrong thing, just own it. It made the thread funny

Newusernameforthiss · 14/10/2024 21:44

Yes, I'm dressing my children up as a Wall Drode and a Kitten Caboodle, can't wait

Lovelysummerdays · 14/10/2024 21:47

If you want to have guiders then put a lit pumpkin outside and they will come. No decorations, no knocking is the general rule.

It obviously isn't...

It's an eggcorn, I assume. Like "to all intensive purposes".

Ponderingwindow · 14/10/2024 21:51

Very popular. We have so many children in our area. They all TOT including many of the teens. Depending on weather we get anywhere from 160 to 200+. Over 200 is when I run out of candy and have to turn out the lights early.

BigBoysDontCry · 14/10/2024 19:56

Guising in Scotland and it's wild on my estate but kids do stick to only hoses that are decorated or have pumpkins out.

I think it really depends where you live.

I grew up in Scotland, but we never decorated our hoses.

What twice?

Edit: oh it's a fucking reverse, wish I hadn't bothered now

Good grief, what is it with this thread?!

Whether.

yeaitsmeagain · 14/10/2024 21:53

Never ever had trick or treaters to our house. Last year our friends moved in down the road, their first house and they were so excited to be buying stuff for trick or treaters. In the end I felt bad for them so forced OH to dress up and go round there asking for treats 😂

They were eating all the chocolate themselves so he came home with a big stash of mini Bountys because they don't like those ones. 😂

Trick or treating.

No. It's basically demanding sweets. DS has never been, or asked to go.
