Do children still go trickle treating?

Moved house since last Halloween and now living on an estate. No kids myself but don't know if kids still go trickle treating at strangers houses? Happy to decorate and get sweets in

OP posts:
Idontlikeyou · 14/10/2024 19:27

They do here but only to decorated houses.

ShortColdandGrey · 14/10/2024 19:27

The kids around here go guising.

DreamW3aver · 14/10/2024 19:28

Is this an in joke thread, no one really thinks it's trickle surely, how would that make any sense?

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 14/10/2024 19:29

Yeah, but mine are too tall to do it now. My son and his friend went out at 12 year old and some woman told them to go away, as they weren't kids anymore 😕 If a 6ft, 16 year old came knocking and had put effort in to dressing up, I wouldn't think twice about treating them as any other trick or treater.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/10/2024 19:29

No. Nobody has ever gone trickle treating.

Some kids do still go trick or treating though. Bloody hell.

Sounds like they'll have super fun life.

I was unsure when mine were young, but now there are clearer 'rules' you know everyone has chosen to be involved I am fine with it. (As long as the children are polite and you don't get 8 teenagers turning up en masse with no costume.)

mitogoshigg · 14/10/2024 19:32

Get 25-30 here. Not even a lot of kids locally

Same I dont give out money so if anyone wants to dress up and knock on the door they are all welcome to a bag of haribo

Growlybear83 · 14/10/2024 19:33

We don't get very many round here, but they don't tend to keep to houses that have decorations outside.

I was a child in the 1960s and I had never heard of trick or treating in England until I was in my very late teens, and didnt really understand the concept. The first year we saw trick or treaters heading down the road, I got ready for them. A couple of very large boys knocked on the door a few minutes later, and said 'trick or treat'. I replied 'trick', squirted them with a big water pistol I had filled up, and shit the door 😆😆😆. I really thought the householder either gave them a treat or played a trick and had no idea that the tricks came from the callers. 😆😆

HotSource · 14/10/2024 19:34

Yes, the protocol here is that if you have lights on and Halloween decs visible they will knock.

No Halloween decs visible, no knocking!

Bournetilly · 14/10/2024 19:35

Yes, we only go to houses with pumpkins or decorations outside though.

StressedQueen · 14/10/2024 19:36

Yes they do. I've got a 9 and 6 year old who still adore it and love going with their friends!

Maviz · 14/10/2024 19:36

Love trickle treating! Might have to start calling it that 😆

CowboyJoanna · 14/10/2024 19:36

Yep. I can confirm lots of parents on this new build estate let their snotty children go round knocking on doors begging for sweets (or for the older kids, cigarettes/vapes)

My children are not among them. Grin

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 14/10/2024 19:36

@reallifeboogie they might go trickle treating or they might go trick or treating in your area but in my area of scotland they go guising!!!!

CameronStrike · 14/10/2024 19:37

hexsnidgett · 14/10/2024 19:08

God people can be mean. It's obviously a typo. Where I live trick or treating goes on. If you would like kids to knock then decorate, if not, they will most likely leave you alone.

Edited

It's not a typo, they wrote it twice. It's a mistake and a very amusing one

Roozkitty · 14/10/2024 19:37

Could be a new way of drip feeding?

Danascully2 · 14/10/2024 19:37

It is big here, small friendly town where we always meet lots of kids we know as we go round. I was dubious before the first time but it has a lovely atmosphere with lots of excited primary kids. We definitely only ever knock on decorated/pumpkin houses which to me makes it fine because nobody is forced to participate. That rule must be newish though - some older friends and neighbours are baffled by why they don't have any knocks even though I've explained multiple times for the last few years that you have to have some decorations and/or a pumpkin outside if you want people to knock!

anotherworriedmum123 · 14/10/2024 19:38

We had easily 50 children last year, we have to have someone in the house to answer the door whilst we’re trickle (😉) treating

soupfiend · 14/10/2024 19:39

What were all the deleted messages?

Spagettifunction · 14/10/2024 19:40

Around here a few kids come out yes.. but not loads as we live a bit more out in the sticks

BusySittingDown · 14/10/2024 19:41

Alison Hammond thought it was Trickle Treating on This Morning last year. They were laughing about it!

My DDs have always gone every year. My now 17 year old has always taken her younger sister and cousin round, with me and their dad walking behind.

DD2 is now 13 and is still deciding whether to go this year. Before anyone starts: yes, she probably IS too old but all of the houses get involved round here and lots of teenagers go. They are all really polite and you're never too old for sweets! [hgrin]. It's fun!

Yes they do though it’s a well know tradition now to only knock on houses that have some form of decoration to it. Even if it’s a simple pumpkin

That's a shame. I get so many trick or treaters from teeny tots to older teens. I love making up boxes or bags with all sorts of goodies but the first year I made up 25 bags thinking it would be plenty and ended up with about 70 people, luckily I had plenty of sweets but I felt so guilty!
