Recommend me a coastal town in the Uk

LittleEsme · 11/10/2024 21:51

...where me and my two besties can sit on a balcony, wrapped up in blankets, sipping wine and over looking the sea.

During the day, we'd love to mooch around a town with lovely little shops, buy some nice things, have a few nice walks, nice food out, stroll on the beach.

Any recommendations around the Uk?!

Cromer rather than Wells-next-the-Sea - you can't see the sea from Wells-next-the-Sea!

St Andrews, just got back on Friday. Lovely shops, good places to eat, good atmosphere in the town.
Beach walks, an hour to Edinburgh if you want a days shopping, lots of wee villages to explore.

Lyme Regis

@sunsu Go on then - which are these great shops? I know Oban very well, and I'd say it's mostly full of shops sellling overpriced scratchy tweeds, tins of shortbread and about 100,000 furry Highland cows.

There are definitely lots of tartan tat shops in Oban, there is no denying that. But there are some wonderful local businesses that surpass the tat. The chocolate shop, Orsay, the wee wine shop, the island jewellers in the square, alba, alba’s kitchen garden, room 15, button nose, the modern croft are all great assets to the town. The selection of cafes and restaurants such as the fishouse, No17 @ the Promenade, Julie’s, hinba, Roxy’s, ee-usk, cafe shore, cuan mor and the seafood shack on the pier serving the freshest and most delicious seafood! All of this is within the town centre, there is even more to offer in the surrounding villages. The nightlife is a buzz and there is nothing better than sitting outside the Oban Inn in the sunshine with a drink watching the world go by during the summer months. Much more to the town than the two establishments you’ve mentioned (both are dated and aimed at older customers). We’ve not even mentioned the scenery, walks or the tours available for visitors. It’s a wonderful place with so much to offer.

Dunwich
Walberswick

There's bugger all in Dunwich - certainly no balcony to sit on drinking wine, and no shops to explore!

On the east coast of East Anglia the only options that meet the OP's requirement are Southwold/Walberswick and Aldeburgh.

caringcarer · 13/10/2024 11:41

Bridlington.

@sunsu Thank you for the list. I'll check some of those out. I have no interest in food, personally, but you're quite right - Oban does have a very good reputation for food. And one of the things I like about Oban is McCaig's tower, which is well worth a visit. But sunsu, you say Rogerson's and The Gem Box are dated and appeal to older customers as though that's a bad thing! Some of us ARE older customers! I disagree about their appeal, anyway - the actual look of both shops is extremely dated, but the jewellery in The Gem Box isn't "dated" at all, and one of the really great things about it is the incredible range of prices - lovely things from twenty pounds up to thousands, so truly something for everyone. Rogerson's has shoes for every age group, as it's the clearance shop for a small chain and gets a huge range of stock. And further to looking dated ... I'm a lover of all things vintage, and I like shops that make me feel I've gone back to the 70s. I think it's a plus point!

Tenby.

There is a street called 'The Croft' which runs alongside North Beach which has some properties with a balcony overlooking the sea. Lovely little town mainly with tourist shops (art, soaps etc) and eateries .

I also like Falmouth - we had an apartment off the top end of the high street with views over the estuary. Some apartments have balconies. The beach is in a different part of the town but assume also properties overlooking the sea. Plenty of eateries .

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 13/10/2024 12:01

Sorry - just read your update. Ignore Tenby then !

averitablevampire · 13/10/2024 15:47

If you are in Wales, then look to North Devon. Appledore, Welcombe, Westwood Ho, Georgeham, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, and Lynmouth all quite different in atmosphere and budgets.

Moonshiners · 11/10/2024 23:35

Yes. Remember the North East is shit.

Full of southerners nowadays. Well and truly discovered it hence prices quadrupling.

Filey is the best.

Whitby is overrated.

Edited

Definitely. Also massively changed.

Startingagainandagain · 13/10/2024 15:59

Deal!

I live there and it is a really friendly seaside town with some nice independent shops and good restaurants and coffee shops.

ShaunaSadeki · 13/10/2024 16:06

Another vote for Lyme Regis

WinterFrog · 13/10/2024 16:10

I like Lyme Regis and Rye for coastal towns in the south. Rye has a brilliant castle too.

LikeMyHeartIsAboutToStopBeating · 13/10/2024 16:14

Deal but it's absolutely the other side of the country.
I have an enormous amount of affection for Barmouth. I know people are rude about it, but it has shops and decent places to eat and the beach/mountain combination is spectacular (esp if you have views of the estuary). Truly one of my favourite places in the UK.

Tynemouth

Crikeyalmighty · 13/10/2024 17:50

@Startingagainandagain haven't been for about 14 years ( we used to live in Canterbury so went a lot) but it used to have a fantastic chippy on middle street

Vintagevixen · 13/10/2024 17:57

Hastings but make sure you stay in the Old Town, it's amazingly atmospheric.

Endgameis · 13/10/2024 18:03

Brancaster staithe, book white horse balcony room, into Burnham market for cocktails and shopping. Or you can sit on the coastal path right outside and watch the fishermen.
