Thread 15 - TalkLair: “I Can't Lie To You About Your Chances, But... You Have My Sympathies.”

Kucinghitam · 09/10/2024 19:40

(Previous thread 14).

Autumn seems to have gone straight into winter. It's cold, wet and windy. In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them). The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics.

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

Oh yes, so it is!

Happy two year anniversary to us all!

So much nicer here, isn't it.

SinnerBoy · 25/11/2024 16:45

Erm, that does seem about right.

I saw an eccentrically dressed man at Morrison's, today. He looked to be in his early 30s. He had shorts, very baggy in the thighs, sort of harem pants style, a jester / harlequin type jacket - velour, or similar and a beige tweed hat, like a witches hat, but no brim.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/11/2024 16:45

Happy anniversary! Is there cake?

duc748 · 25/11/2024 16:45

It's close, I think, end of November.

SinnerBoy · 25/11/2024 16:45

Sorry, no cake.

🍰🎂

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/11/2024 16:46

That sounds a, erm, strong look, Sinner. Not very weather appropriate.

DeanElderberry · 25/11/2024 16:55

Anniversary! I still go over there and read stuff from time to time and it is such a nest of bullies. Smug bullies. It was both comic and sad watching the way they greeted the person that a poster of this parish had recommended going there when another site closed. Fortunately he has a thick skin and has found his won niche there.

I'm not sure about the grammatical structure of that sentence, but you're all intelligent people, you'll understand.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 25/11/2024 16:59

I haven't been back since the day I logged out, when we were told in no uncertain terms to fuck off.

Gonners · 25/11/2024 18:03

I was going to say "It surely can't be that long?" - I would have guessed 1 year - but yes. You started the first Lifeboat Thread on 28 November 2022:

Britinme · 25/11/2024 19:03

Must be about that.

MouseMinge · 25/11/2024 23:15

I'm sort of grand for cake. I've been eating brioche with butter and damson jam for a couple of weeks now. It makes me very happy.

I've not read an Oz book but the things I know about them are, as everyone knows, the ruby slippers are silver and that many people think this was to do with the silver movement, to do with the gold standard and having silver also as part of the standard by how we did money, something something. They take this from the silver slippers, silver; the yellow brick road, gold; Oz whichis what we used when we are talking about pounds and ounces, lbs, oz and related to, er, silver. All of the above, except the shoes which were definitely silver, could be a bollocks seen by people that Baum hadn't intended.

He did have some good politics, for universal suffrage. And very bad politics, all of the native Americans should be murdered if we want whitey to be safe.

I read half of Wicked by whoever wrote it and got a bit bored. I might try it again because I like the idea of seeing the good in a bad character. I enjoyed Maleficent with that Angelina Jolie for that reason even though I do not like that Angelina Jolie.

MouseMinge · 25/11/2024 23:15

Happy birthday to us!

Gonners · 26/11/2024 21:18

Indeed - it is pleasing to have reached the Terrible Twos! Can we now have tantrums?

I am pleased to report that I'm now the proud mistress of a cheerful red iPhone SE. Or perhaps it is my master? We shall see. It's a nice piece of kit, though the front page/s is/are excessively loud and busy and will need some work. But oh my goodness, the difference in size is very, very pleasing!

I have named him Phoney.

MouseMinge · 26/11/2024 22:24

The only reason I'd quite like an iPhone is because it seems that all of the phone cases are for iPhones. My camera is sort of in the middle of my phone not the top corner and so is my finger thing to be biometric and all that clever stuff. This post has been brought to you by first world problems inc.

I haven't been back since the day I logged out, when we were told in no uncertain terms to fuck off.

I spent a week dipping into it after registering here, just a few threads, avoiding unpleasantness. I haven't been back since.

SqueakyDinosaur · 27/11/2024 10:39

I'm still on there, but less than before.

Kucinghitam · 27/11/2024 11:21

ChezKuc we are completely embedded in the Appleverse, having been Mac users from way back, before it was cool. So we all have iPhones/iPads/iWhatever and all the associated iCloud everything on a family account. It would be an epic pain in the posterior for us to migrate away from Apple, thus ensuring that they get our hard-earned £££ forever...

I had a Macintosh Classic (+ rudimentary printer) when it came out in about 1990. I was a student at the time and they had some amazingly cheap "educational" deal. Amusingly they came with zero software - not even a notepad - though they did provide a keyboard and mouse! But I had an ex- with an earlier Mac who unofficially installed everything I needed. I eventually handed it on to a friend's daughter who was off to university.

Some time in 1980 I was working for a very small fund management company and was sent off to a lunch meeting for Apple, who were about to have the company listed on the stock exchange. Jobs and Wozniak were both very young, one of them (probably the latter) was extraordinarily scruffy and quite - er - unusual among the men in suits. I went back and said they appeared to be mad but would probably make a fortune, so we bought the stock. It's now worth 2,335 times what we paid for it, which rather outstrips inflation!

Britinme · 27/11/2024 14:02

Ooh! I have Apple stock envy!

Gonners · 27/11/2024 14:20

Arf! Me too - sadly, none of it was in my name!

MouseMinge · 27/11/2024 22:59

When I imagine doing some time travel one of my first actions would be "buy Apple stock" also, if I went back to Victorian times I'd buy Nintendo stock if I could find the Tokyo stock market, I doubt very much it was on the London stock market. I do like to daydream about time travel, along with dystopian future it's my favourite sci-fi subgenre.

MouseMinge · 27/11/2024 23:02

I've finally got round to watching Threads. It's very good indeed. I felt most sad when I saw the dead dog and cat and previously when the poor cat was having trouble after the first blast. The makeup people did marvels with the burned to a crisp dead people. If I'd seen this when it was first shown I'd have been shitting my pants.

Mine too! Have you read Jodi Taylor's Chronicles of St Mary's series? And its spin-off The Time Police series? Brilliant and very funny. I also like Connie Willis's books, especially the trilogy set in WW2.

I read a bit about the 'effects' in Threads. For injuries on the living they used crushed breakfast cereal mixed with tomato ketchup and the cat was apparently filmed after having had a lot of catnip and then the film was run backwards. It might not look as realistic as you might get with modern methods but goodness me it was certainly creative.

SinnerBoy · 28/11/2024 09:25

Crikey, it's cold here today, minus 2° at 8 am. Frost and black ice is all over, with the usual idiot drivers speeding through our 20 mph limits.
