I’ve heard that too and I suspect it’s true as - by way of a broad brush generalisation - their customers are probably better able to afford to bin food if not completely certain of it.

But while I might overlook fruit, veg, baked goods or even dairy use by dates if it looked and smelled ok, I think fish is a no no.

I'm having salmon tonight, it's use by date was yesterday, no hesitation is doing so. Best before dates on food packaging are a fairly recent thing. They are a guide.
