The airtight sealed, ready to eat chilli fillet type ones?

Forgot about them!

I would. It doesn't suddenly go off at midnight. Common sense and your nose are all you need.

This.

So, in theory, it’s good at 11:59pm and off at 12:00am? All these things have an additional margin.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 07/10/2024 05:22

100% yes! If your fridge is kept between 5 and 0 degrees and operating properly this wouldn’t be a problem at all. I’m quite surprised at the amount of people saying ‘No’ outright. What a waste.

Peonies12 · 07/10/2024 05:50

It sounds like it’s the hot smoked fish rather than raw so I would. Those dates are a load of rubbish anyway

The whole 24 hours of Sunday probably swallow that margin.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2024 07:59

IMO your nose will be able to tell you PDQ whether it’s remotely ‘off’.

No, I did this once and got hilarious diarrhoea. In a hotel. On a business trip. Really wouldn't advise it.

Was this hilarious or hideous !? 🤣

I'm not at all wasteful, equally I never eat out of date food. This is a 'would you' question, so no I would not eat it. Digging slightly deeper, rather than assuming I'm wasteful, i just don't have out of date food.

Calliopespa · 07/10/2024 08:51

I would not eat salmon with a use by of yesterday today, let alone tomorrow.

Do let us know what you decide @TheDoorsOpen

I think I'll wash the chilli off, recook it and give it to the dog.

Qualified chef...salmon and chicken...no.

WondrousMoringPuertoRico · 07/10/2024 09:27

If it has been kept in the fridge then definitely yes I would - I would eat it to a couple of days past the use by date. If it smelt bad on opening it then I wouldn't but they always err on the side of caution with these dates.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/10/2024 09:28

No. I watched Airplane as a child and I've been careful with fish ever since.

CheeseWisely · 07/10/2024 09:29

If it looks ok, feels ok and smells ok then yes I would. I think our fridge is where the iceberg that sunk the Titanic started out though.

Important to be wary of sunk costs fallacy though, if it smells / looks ok raw but then seems dodgy during the cooking process is write it off, bin it, start again.

Edit as I read again and see it’s airtight and pre-cooked (like smoked mackerel?) those products typically have a shelf-life of weeks, so I’d think nothing at all of another 48 hours.

CreateUserNames · 07/10/2024 09:30

Yes if it doesn’t smell bad. The air tight ones often ok.

hideawayforever · 07/10/2024 09:33

yes

BigDahliaFan · 07/10/2024 09:36

I would. I'd probably cook it though (just because I prefer it hot.) It doesn't magically go off. And also lots of that fish is quite old anyway - I saw a programme about it...the expert said it's fine to eat fish that's a bit out of date, but he'd always buy frozen as that is much fresher.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 07/10/2024 09:38

Depends where it’s from. I think that places like M&S and Waitrose have a far more conservative shelf life than other shops. So if it’s from one of those, I’d eat it if was smelling okay.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 07/10/2024 09:39

No. I always use things one day after the use by, even chicken and fish, but I wouldn’t do it two days after.

Namechange7364 · 07/10/2024 10:02

Nope!

Newlittlerescue · 07/10/2024 10:33

As yours is pre-cooked, I would eat it (having sniffed/tasted it first).

But (slightly off-topic) salmon is one of the only fresh meats I wouldn't eat on or after it's eat-by date, and I would do all I could to eat it on day of purchase. In the past, I've cooked salmon close to or on it's use-by and it's had a slightly off flavour (smells like plastic/rubber?) - it's never made me ill, but it's such an expensive food you want to eat it in prime condition.

Jellyslothbridge · 07/10/2024 10:40

If you eat it (looks and smells OK) I would make sure you heat it up to a high temperature rather than eating it cold.

Omg! That poor pup: dogs hate chilli and it will be right through it having marinated in it all this time. He’s going to have chilli butthole coincide with diarrhea. 😬🌶💩

DiscoBeat · 07/10/2024 11:14

That's two days out of date, definitely not!

That's interesting, how do you find out about this?
