There are currently quite a few I have lost respect for, who are yours and why??

OP posts:

Leonardo DiCaprio. I used to think he was pretty cool. Good actor, cares about the environment, and seems to love his mum and his friends.

I have lost respect for him though - over the past decade or so - for dating young women who are young enough to be his daughter. Actually, now pretty much a quarter century younger. He is 50 next month, and the young women he dates (all models) are barely out of their teens when he starts dating them. It's grim.

Even if they are 'beards,' (and I suspect they are!) he could still go for women 10 years older! (Like aged 30 or so!) Yeah I know the young production line models he 'dates' know the score, but it's just gross seeing him with these very young women (who are practically girls.) Turns my stomach tbh, and it's a shame because I used to really like him.

What's beards?

Waitingfordoggo · 06/10/2024 16:00

A beard is a pretend relationship to conceal the fact someone is gay. @ilovepixie

Russell brand. For all the many obvious reasons

Did you ever have any respect for the preening, self-regarding, odious, sleazy gobshite to begin with?

WigglyBeanstalk · 06/10/2024 16:03

NewGreenDuck · 06/10/2024 15:31

How do you know that you are a woman?

😂

OneRarelySeesABrazierTheseDays · 06/10/2024 16:04

Michael 'only Welsh actors should play Welsh people, but I am playing yet another English/american/insert nationality of choice person' Sheen

supercalie · 06/10/2024 16:04

@Hunnymonster1

Emma Watson is a big feminist and has done a lot for women -- so what? So she can't be a misogynist?

Jimmy Saville is a big child wellbeing fan and has done so much for children's wellbeing, bringing their dreams to life, helping children sick in hospital, dying of terminal diseases.

He's also a paedophile.

None of his good deeds make him not a paedophile.

Soulou · 06/10/2024 16:04

Laurence Fox, always liked the Fox family for their acting. He was so anti Covid and thought he was above the law. Also many other bits he has spoken out on or protests he joins

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/10/2024 16:06

Eddie Izzard - and not intially for the obvious reasons but because of his self aggrandising over the marathons. And then of course his switching between girl mode and boy mode and frightening girls in the women's toilets.

Jo Brand

What's Jo Brand done / said?

Picoloangel · 06/10/2024 16:10

Oprah Winfrey after the H and M interview. So much of what was said was demonstrably untrue and none of it appeared to be fact checked. I alway liked OW but I just felt that she wanted to believe it all. The business about not having titles was something that could have been cleared with a quick google ffs.

The Harry Potter stars and all the others who when turned their backs on women.

I can’t say Holly W - even though I agree with everything that’s been said upthread but I didn’t like her to begin with 😬

ChaToilLeam · 06/10/2024 16:11

David Tennant
Margaret Attwood
Jason Isaacs

lifeturnsonadime · 06/10/2024 16:12

Hunnymonster1 · 06/10/2024 15:29

Yeah it's so outrageous isn't it lol lol . Seriously the transphobic bigots are at large here lol

If you've seen any transphobia report it.

What I see is women sticking up for women and being aghast at the way in which some people through our rights to single sex spaces and sports under the bus to appease a class of men.

Oh and women being concerned about children being put on a path to medical modification because some adults tell them that they have been born wrong.

Gender critical beliefs are protected in law. So you may not like women like JKR that's on you. But it is incorrect to brand women who stick up for adult human females and children as transphobic.

Butchyrestingface · 06/10/2024 16:14

David Tennant.
Rufus Sewell (the cradle-snatching got a bit too much).

TwistedWonder · 06/10/2024 16:14

I’ve never read any HP books or seen any of the movies but i absolutely love JKR as a human who stands up for women.

Used to like Billy Bragg but he’s shown his true bigoted misogynistic colours now

Namechangeforadhd · 06/10/2024 16:14

Billy Bragg. In the 80s/90s it felt like he was such a voice for true leftism. Turns out he's a misogynist who hates women.

Eddie Izzard. Aside from being utterly brilliant, his out and proud transvestism was such a breath of fresh air, and the the marathon running was amazing. I just loved him. Then he decided he could be in 'girl mode' to try to use women's rights. Ugh
I don't generally 'respect' celebrities, but I did respect those two.

OuterSpaceCadet · 06/10/2024 16:16

I started from a stance of not really respecting many celebrities. I had a slightly alternative upbringing and never paid a huge amount of attention to popular culture.

But like many a PP I have lost respect for any celebrities who claim to be interested in various aspects of equality, mental health, the environment or social justice and yet are openly misogynist. As well as being devastating (I really didn't expect women's rights to be rolled back in my lifetime, to my shame I took the gains of women before me for granted) it just undermines their stance on everything else.

I have become so cynical and aware of how much celebrities spout whatever BS they think fits their brand. I could name many comedians but I'm going to suffice with Adam Buxton because wealthy Eton educated men have an extra responsibility to check their fucking privilege before endorsing misogynist pseudo religions.

Skyrainlight · 06/10/2024 16:19

lifeturnsonadime · 06/10/2024 13:45

All of the 'willing to throw women under the bus' ones. Many mentioned above, but in addition the Harry Potter 'child' stars who've turned their back on JKR for supporting women, Stephen King, Phillip Pullman, Margaret Atwood.

Agreed with Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/10/2024 16:21

She pays her taxes, she funds charities generously, she made sure that women in Scotland had access to single sex rape counselling and support, she is very entertaining on X and she writes quite good books too.

Yes, this! She also helped a group of female lawyers escape from Taliban Afghanistan.

LoobyLou73 · 06/10/2024 16:23

Hunnymonster1 · 06/10/2024 15:06

Wow another mumsnet who doesn't like people standing up for trans people rights this isn't anything to do with women's rights as Emma is a woman but you know comes to something the bigotry on here

There is absolutely nothing bigoted about stating biological facts. 🙄

Compash · 06/10/2024 16:23

Not 'lost' respect, but have always the creeps at Gareth Malone, because in an early episode of The Choir they were auditioning for the female lead and there was a very pretty little slip of a girl with a poor voice, and a more sturdy red-haired girl with a great voice, an Alison Moyet type... and which one did GM want as the lead? The little pretty!

And when he was overruled by everyone else who had ears to hear, he was really sulky... the poor red-haired girl had to chase him down after the performance to ask him how she did, and he was really graceless and dismissive. So seeing him hailed as some sort of egalitarian music hero now makes me go 'Hmm...'.

Corinthiana · 06/10/2024 16:33

Hunnymonster1 · 06/10/2024 15:29

Yeah it's so outrageous isn't it lol lol . Seriously the transphobic bigots are at large here lol

What's with all the lol lol lol?
Are you saying people are bigots, or laughing at the accusation?

Livinghappy · 06/10/2024 16:37

David Tennant, I met him once, briefly, years ago and thought he seemed normal then he went on a rant at LGBT ceremony.

Like others I do admire JKR. Those who hate her can't have read her views or writing. She is so brave to stand up for women rights.

ChishiyaBat · 06/10/2024 16:37

@Hunnymonster1 so you think anyone who believes in biological differences between men and women are bigots?

BunnyLake · 06/10/2024 16:39

Hunnymonster1 · 06/10/2024 15:15

Been really good to see the bigots out themselves on here though not liking the truth it seems aww

I’ll tell you who I do have a lot of time and respect for, Chloe Cole.

It’s people like you who are condoning and contributing to the ruination of young lives because of this ridiculous idea that you can be whoever you want to be just because that’s what you want to be in that moment, never mind the fact you may be a child who doesn’t know their own mind yet.

herecomesautumn · 06/10/2024 16:39

Not sure it was respect but I used to love John Cusack

His views on Ukraine and Israel have changed my mind
