Many, many!

Frankly, if you're a comedian, actor or other celebrity - I don't need to know your political views. OK, everything is political in a sense, so sometimes this is understandable - eg Chris Packham or David Attenborough expressing their views about the environment - but please spare me the party-political stuff. It just amounts to virtue-signalling and self-righteous preaching. I like Emma Thompson as an actor, but oh boy, her preaching puts me right off. If you live in Islington and also Venice, then the problems which affect most of us will not affect you. So, so many luvvie lefties who preach - send their darlings to private school! How do they square their hypocrisy with their preaching???

Sandi Toksvig - I haven't liked her for a long time. I used to, when she first came on the scene, but she is too politcal for me. And interestingly, I used to thing she came over as a thoroughly 'good egg', but I worked with someone who'd been bullied relentlessly by her at school and still got triggered by catching sight of her on TV! I would never of thought that of her, but it just goes to show you can never tell.

Covid is a vascular disease, if Novak were to be badly affected by catching it he could be looking at damage to his heart and lungs which would have the potential to end his career. Friend of mine (mid 30's ) has damaged lungs due to catching covid pre-vaccine, she can no longer walk for long distances, exercise or do the dance classes she used to love.

It is not a vascular disease, it is a disease which affects the respiratory system primarily. Lungs are not part of vascular system...

How do you know that you are a woman?

Theirishwoman · 06/10/2024 15:32

JK Rowling

MadeleineMummy · 06/10/2024 15:33

Woke is so evil, being aware of social injustice and hating free speech so much that you can’t stand Jim Davidson’s Chalky White Jamaican accent or his anti-immigrant rants or calling for the Navy to sink immigrant boats with torpedos.

I don't know that I respect people just because they're celebrities, or even just because they have a great talent. I admire their talent, but don't necessarily think they must be admirable human beings.

People who have disappointed me include:

Huw Edwards (surprised no one else has mentioned him as yet)

Neil Gaiman- if any of the allegations turn out to be true

Morrissey- ages ago, for his support for far-right-wingers

Roger Daltrey, for some of his views on Brexit and Covid

Novak Djokovic, for his anti-vaccine antics

I already mentioned Huw.

Janina Ramirez. It's particularly grim when your not so secret crush turns out to be a nutter. Sobs.

Oh no, what's she's done/said? I love her programmes so I'd be so disappointed if she's an arsehole.

SquirrelSoShiny · 06/10/2024 15:42

AllAboutNiamh · 06/10/2024 14:34

I don’t think I respect any celebs, apart from JK Rowling.

This is where I'm at to be honest. The rest are so cowardly and self-interested. I love her for her courage.

The rest increasingly seem like Marie Antoninettes telling the plebs to eat cake. But I never really respected any to start with, I just actively dislike more of them now.

I've never liked this woman - I love history and art history, but the TV goes off when she comes on! She is SO full of herself - I heard her being very patronising to another academic on a radio discussion once. I find her inarticulate and sometimes just careless and inaccurate. How she got where she is, both in the academic world and on TV, is a mystery to me.

redtrain123 · 06/10/2024 15:43

Robson Green and Roman Keating - both giving the family man image in interviews in interviews etc. Both were having affairs.

Jason Manford is another one, but people seems to have forgiven him for his sexting scandal, and he’s resurrected his career.

What is woke OP?

I don't know if OP's come back (did a quick scroll, but couldn't see anything) but my problem with woke is the 'cancel culture' aspect. Once, it was OK to have a different view, to disagree with other people - but I do feel increasingly, you HAVE to think the RIGHT things.

I remember years ago when I was in a university seminar (long ago!), and a man was accused by the lecturer of 'supporting the death penalty!'. Now, as it happened, he didn't - she'd jumped in and misunderstood him - but so what if he did support it? It's not illegal to do so! I say that as a strongly anti-death-penalty person, but fgs, people are allowed to have different views without being shipped off to the metaphorical gulags! Or they used to be allowed to.

she came out on X (completely apropos of fuck all, so she didn't have to do it) with the usual TRA catechism about two years ago. Google "Janina Ramirez-woke twat" to find out.

So the woman who wrote a book about women in history is now throwing us under the bus? Great.
Had no idea about this, I'm disappointed but somehow not surprised.

strangeandfamiliar · 06/10/2024 15:53

I could type a long list, but like a pp above there is only one public figure I genuinely respect, and that is JK Rowling.

Waitingfordoggo · 06/10/2024 15:55

Agree @CoffeeCantata. If being ‘woke’ just means being left-leaning, tolerant and compassionate, then I’m as woke as the rest of them.

But woke increasingly seems to refer to the purity spiral and authoritarianism. This idea that ‘You can’t say that!’ I’ve heard that exact phrase from my teens and what I said to them is ‘People can say anything they like. You have a choice then whether to ‘cancel’ them (ie refuse to associate with/support them), or to attempt to change their minds using logic and reason’.

☝️☝️ this 💯

She pays her taxes, she funds charities generously, she made sure that women in Scotland had access to single sex rape counselling and support, she is very entertaining on X and she writes quite good books too.
