If you get up for the loo in the night, do you turn the light on?

I saw a thing the other day about how mums will go to the loo in the night without turning the lights on either in the hallway or in the bathroom. I realised that I never turn any lights on, no babies to wake up or small children, I just don’t need it.

So is that a female thing? And adult thing? Or a parent thing?

What about you?

We had motion sensor activated low level LED light strips put in the family bathroom and I am SO glad we had them installed. They create enough light to see what you’re doing without it being too bright. Great for small kids too.

No light in the en suite but it’s so small it doesn’t matter - I know the layout by touch.

EmeraldDreams73 · 04/10/2024 22:34

No, never. We're in the country so it's really dark but the blind is thin and there's normally just about enough light to stagger to the loo. Even the light from my phone would wake me up.

I have occasionally been completely disoriented on pitch black nights and ended up feeling around the room for a light switch while trying not to wet myself, but thankfully that hardly ever happens!

No, because then Id have to put my glasses on. Then Id be properly awake instead of only just awake enough to go to the loo.

That’s very true. I have a very high prescription (-12) and don’t bother to put my glasses on either.

I don't put a light on at home but I use a torch on holiday ever since I forgot I was away and walked straight into a wall that shouldn't have been there.

Buttermill · 04/10/2024 22:38

Just going to say it im afraid of the dark so I use my phone torch

greengreyblue · 04/10/2024 22:39

I usually wee once in the night and no I have never put the light on. I’m 53.

Or pee drips on the seat from the males in the house?
Or the seat has not been put down so you fall into the loo?

I have trained DH to sit down. No toilet seats up or splashes. All it took was ten years of a 6ft 4 man living in a house with the toilet under a sloping roof with a head clearance of about 5ft 6.

I turn the light on because there might be wolves and monsters lurking in the dark waiting to grab me.

Also I need to see that it's still DH in the bed before I get back in, and not a crazed murderer who killed him and disposed of his body in the couple of minutes I was gone and is now waiting for me to get back in so he can murder me too.

All perfectly rational.

As a child I had to get back into bed before the toilet stopped flushing otherwise the ghost nun would come out of the airing cupboard. I always made it back in time.

We have motion sensor nightlights on the landing and in the bathroom. Bright enough to prevent accidents, not so bright that it wakes you.

Fizbosshoes · 04/10/2024 23:40

We have an ensuite, I almost always put the light on, I'd never put my glasses on though

StormingNorman · 04/10/2024 23:42

I often do (depending on whether I can see without it) and I can always tell when DH hasn’t turned the light on 💦

7catsisnotenough · 05/10/2024 00:14

Light on in the bathroom but don't flush - first one up has to make the tea so I might be cheating...🤣

Nat6999 · 05/10/2024 02:11

I use the torch on my smart watch, I have nerve damage in my legs & feet which means I walk like I'm drunk, the other night I got up for a wee, stumbled & nearly went head first over the bannister.

Catsmere · 05/10/2024 07:45

Might depend on how dark the house is and how far from bed to loo. I do occasionally. Mostly I just use the furniture for handholds. My bathroom/toilet (all in one room) lead off my bedroom.

Peonies12 · 05/10/2024 07:46

No I don’t, there’s enough light coming in through the windows from street lights

Tumbleweed101 · 05/10/2024 07:49

Our only bathroom is downstairs so I have salt lamps and night lights along the route, it’s enough to see but not wake up too much.

Cynic17 · 05/10/2024 07:51

No. I'm not a parent, but I know where the loo is. I don't turn on the light because it's too dazzling and wakes me up too much.

itwasnevermine · 05/10/2024 08:29

Not but I use my phone screen for light as the toilet is downstairs and I'd fall!

SquatWeightaMinute · 05/10/2024 08:30

No, never. I keep my eyes closed as much as possible too. DH doesn’t put the light on either.

tiggergoesbounce · 05/10/2024 08:50

Our bathroom light stays on all night for our DS, so I close my eyes when I go the loo, the light would wake me up too much.

MaggieBsBoat · 05/10/2024 08:53

No, but my DH does and also any other light switch he passes on the way. Drives me crazy as it just makes no sense and wakes people up (like me!)

Zingy123 · 05/10/2024 09:21

We leave our bathroom light on, always have done.

Wolfcub · 05/10/2024 09:37

No

DilemmaDelilah · 05/10/2024 09:45

I neither turn the light on nor flush the loo if it's just a wee (I do both if it's more!) unless we have guests. I don't have children at home, it's because I don't want to wake up DH, and I don't want to wake up myself more than I have to. The fan in the bathroom is activated by the light and goes on for about 20 minutes after it's switched off. The water re-filling is also really noisy.

If it's just me at home then I flush... I don't like not flushing, but DH doesn't sleep that well and he looks after me so I want to make sure he gets as good a sleep as possible.

stopringingme · 05/10/2024 11:27

Bedroom - no

En suite - yes

The street lights go off at midnight, so it is pitch black unless the house over the roads security light goes off, then we are lit up like Blackpool illuminations.
