If you get up for the loo in the night, do you turn the light on?

I saw a thing the other day about how mums will go to the loo in the night without turning the lights on either in the hallway or in the bathroom. I realised that I never turn any lights on, no babies to wake up or small children, I just don’t need it.

So is that a female thing? And adult thing? Or a parent thing?

What about you?

I don't. Sometimes I take my phone with the torch on
Our bathroom light automatically turns the fan on so it's noisy at night!

@Mum2jenny I’m assuming you mean a PRI light. When we had one plugged in in the bedroom it was triggered when we rolled over in bed. Tell me you have something better…

The ones we have can be adjusted depending on where we put them. But they are rather old technology.

HeidiBlum · 04/10/2024 22:01

I’m interested @Mum2jenny . Can you provide a link please or is the product no longer available?

It's a male/female thing in our household. In hotels, DH always insists the light is left on in the bathroom in case he needs to go in the night, even if it makes the bedroom too light (I sleep better in the pitch dark). I insist I can memorise my way to the unfamiliar toilet - but having said that, I recently broke one of my toes when I stubbed it on the bed leg after a trip to the loo in an airbnb! At home, we both manage to go in the dark and usually there's some moonlight to help.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 04/10/2024 22:02

Our bathroom light stays on all night as we have three landings and traversing those in the pitch black makes me nervous.

It did start as a habit in our old house when the children were small so they could easily make it and now it's required because of the landings!

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 04/10/2024 22:02

I've realised reading through other posts though that anywhere else I'm fine with the lights off?! Hotels, other houses...

bitsalty · 04/10/2024 22:03

No, I take my phone for light. Lights make the dog think it's morning.

No idea, my dh buys this stuff. But we have several units that are sensor led. They seem to be triggered by movement and the sensitivity is varied.

familyissues12345 · 04/10/2024 22:04

I just use the light of the screen on my phone. Our dog coordinates with the bedroom carpet, so there's always a risk I'll break my neck tripping over her!

Bollylops · 04/10/2024 22:05

I bought some stick on motion sensor lights to save energy for this. But still forgetting and turn it on!

Mum2jenny · 04/10/2024 22:06

Much of the stuff we use was available years ago. Not bought anything recently.

Spritzylime · 04/10/2024 22:06

I struggle to see in the dark. My eyes don’t adjust.

we have a motion detecting battery powered night light on our bathroom window sill. And it’s brilliant and soft.

Littletreefrog · 04/10/2024 22:06

I turn the light on. 1 because the bathroom is downstairs and 2 because sometimes there are slugs.

ChocHotolate · 04/10/2024 22:07

No, but I live in central London so it's never really dark anyway

WhereAreAllTheOddSocks · 04/10/2024 22:08

No. As there's a streetlight outside that shines through the blinds enough to see. If not I'd use my phone torch. I'm a wimp and always think someone's in the house. Batshit I know. Dh or adult dc don't turn light on either. My younger dc does Inc their bedroom , landing and bathroom! Wakes everyone

NPET · 04/10/2024 22:09

I rarely turn the light on in my bathroom.
Well no that's not true, I do if I'm going in there to wash my face or comb my hair, but not to shower or use the toilet.
But, thinking about it, I hope men do. Their aim is bad enough anyway!

Pillowfights · 04/10/2024 22:09

No, I can find my way in the dark-walk with arms outstretched though so I don't crash into the door or wall & on the way back trail a hand along the edge of the bed so I know where I am

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/10/2024 22:10

I use my phone, our bedroom is upstairs in the loft so too many lights.

mindutopia · 04/10/2024 22:11

No, I bring my phone with me and it’s enough light just from the home screen that I can see.

AlisonWonderbra · 04/10/2024 22:12

I go several times a night. I never put the light on unless I've had a nightmare

MirandaWest · 04/10/2024 22:12

I am very short sighted (so basically can’t see much at all without glasses) but I can make my way to and from the toilet in the night without putting on either the light or my glasses.

Autumnalfun · 04/10/2024 22:14

I use my phone torch.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 04/10/2024 22:18

Nooooo, I barely open my eyes

Sunsparkles · 04/10/2024 22:25

Nope, but I have dim sensor lights in the hallway for the kids, I noticed I tend to keep my eyes shut lol. I use my phone screen light at my partner's though. Also, I ALWAYS put on slippers so I don't stand on big house spiders....have done that before and nearly died!!! 😳🕷️

I use them , they are battery operated (3×aaa each ) the batteries last for ages , over a month depending on how often they are triggered , I have had my lights for at least 3 years, they give off a soft glow rather than bright light .
I have 1 under my bed , one on the landing and one just inside the front door .
