If you get up for the loo in the night, do you turn the light on?

I saw a thing the other day about how mums will go to the loo in the night without turning the lights on either in the hallway or in the bathroom. I realised that I never turn any lights on, no babies to wake up or small children, I just don’t need it.

So is that a female thing? And adult thing? Or a parent thing?

What about you?

No the neighbours have their outside lights on all night so en-suite is lit up without the need to switch lights on.

MargaretThursday · 04/10/2024 21:00

I don't because it wakes me up too much to go back to sleep.
If I need some light though, my watch has a dull torch on which is enough to see by, so i sometimes use that.

FamilyPhoto · 04/10/2024 21:00

No, because then Id have to put my glasses on. Then Id be properly awake instead of only just awake enough to go to the loo.

gamerchick · 04/10/2024 21:00

I do, otherwise I may end up hoofing the cat into the bath panel, because she thinks it's her job to escort me.

HeidiBlum · 04/10/2024 21:01

@Mum2jenny I’m assuming you mean a PRI light. When we had one plugged in in the bedroom it was triggered when we rolled over in bed. Tell me you have something better…

WolfFoxHare · 04/10/2024 21:01

No. The en-suite has a window and there’s enough ambient light to manage. I don’t even put my
glasses on. I find I barely wake up if I don’t put the light on.

Pumpkinseason3 · 04/10/2024 21:01

Never any lights here either. DS (almost 4) has a nightlight in his room but if he woke up and saw any other lights on I’d be in for an even earlier wake up than usual and that would be horrendous 😂😂 so I don’t take the chance lol.

Last hotel we stayed in, we stayed in a family suite. I went to the loo in the night and forgot there was a step down into the lounge area from the bedroom and went flat on my face, headfirst into a chair 😂🤣 Needless to say, I wasn’t laughing at the time and DH got a proper fright with the commotion 😂 Mental note to use a light in unfamiliar surroundings next time 😂

HopeSpringsInfernal · 04/10/2024 21:02

No, it would wake me up & I'd never get back to sleep

StarSlinger · 04/10/2024 21:03

We don't turn our landing light off at night. I rarely get up for a wee at night though.

spannasaurus · 04/10/2024 21:03

No, and I don't put my glasses on

Vettrianofan · 04/10/2024 21:04

Wowzel · 04/10/2024 20:50

No, no need as I just know where the loo is

This more or less. Been like this for years.

Philodendron · 04/10/2024 21:05

I never have - husband and kids do.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 04/10/2024 21:05

No, it's annoying enough as it is having to wake up to pee I'm not gonna switch a light on and guarantee that I won't get back to sleep!

I stumbled from my bed, to the ensuite at the end of the room, and then stumble back again. I may put it on if I'm on my period, but I'm pretty good at seeing to that in rhe dark.

In fact, I try to avoid opening my eyes at all 😆

Cobblersorchard · 04/10/2024 21:05

Lights on, it’s downstairs though and there’s always cats to fall over on the stairs. I sometimes take my phone instead, but can’t do it with no light at all.

meltedchocolateandstrawberries · 04/10/2024 21:05

We always have a dimmed light on on the landing, partly for DS5 in case he wakes up scared. So that helps guide us to the loo. I used to turn the bathroom light on but I've stopped recently, I guess I just came to my senses! DH has never turned the light on. I do panic that there'll be massive spider close to me and I'll suddenly become aware of it in the dark though!

twomanyfrogsinabox · 04/10/2024 21:05

Turn on ensuite light which is not very bright. Feel my way to the ensuite and back. If it's pitch black turn on the side light but only on dim.

Donkeyfromshrek · 04/10/2024 21:06

Just spent a week away on a course, so been staying in a room on my own. Haven't turned a light on when I've been to the loo in the night, because if I did it would wake me up properly, where I want to stay asleep.

Northernlass44 · 04/10/2024 21:06

I leave my bathroom light on all the time as I don't like walking in the dark I have dogs they get to under your feet plus sometimes my older dog likes to piss in hallway bathroom so after having an accidental foot in something I woykd rather not learnt that mistake so light stays on

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/10/2024 21:08

No, never, and nor do I put my glasses on. I can pretty much go for a wee without waking up.

BruceAndNosh · 04/10/2024 21:08

I sleep on the side of the bed nearest the bathroom, and all our bathroom have battery operated sensor lights. Fairly dim so don't sear your eyeballs but you can see what you are doing.

UmopapIsdn · 04/10/2024 21:09

You’re all taking your life into your own hands! Fools.
Pennywise or Chucky could get you any time. Putting the light on scares them away.

redannie18 · 04/10/2024 21:12

I got little sensor lights from amazon and they are on the skirting board en route, they are very dim but enough to light the way. I sometimes have to wave my hands around to reactivate it 😂

Jom222 · 04/10/2024 21:16

Neither my H or I turn on any lights and we're both up at least twice each to pee at night.

There is a small nightlight in the bathroom which gives enough light to find the way in and out w/o falling but not bright to wake one up.

I feel like there is so much stray light from glowing buttons on electronics all thru the house that its never really fully dark anymore.

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 04/10/2024 21:20

No, we have a street light just outside the bathroom.

Retrogamer · 04/10/2024 21:24

Oh, this is interesting. No I don't. My pull light is noisy and my baby wakes at the sound of a knee cracking. The light also switches the extraction fan on.
